In January, Nature launched an informal survey into readers' use of cognition-enhancing drugs. Brendan Maher has waded through the results and found large-scale use and a mix of attitudes towards the drugs.

The US National Institutes of Health is to crack down on scientists 'brain doping' with performance-enhancing drugs such as Provigil and Ritalin, a press release declared last week. The release, brainchild of evolutionary biologist Jonathan Eisen of the University of California, Davis, turned out to be an April Fools' prank. And the World Anti-Brain Doping Authority website that it linked to was likewise fake. But with a number of co-conspirators spreading rumours about receiving anti-doping affidavits with their first R01 research grants, the ruse no doubt gave pause to a few of the respondents to Nature 's survey on readers' use of cognition-enhancing drugs.

The survey was triggered by a...  ...Read Full Article HERE

Mechanical computers are nothing new. The remains of a 2,000 year old analogue computer known as the Antikythera mechanism were discovered in Greece in 1902.

And during the nineteenth century, English mathematician and engineer Charles Babbage designed various steam powered mechanical computers.

Spam reaches 30-year anniversary   Twisted Evil it now makes up more than 80% of mail message traffic

Spam - the scourge of every e-mail inbox - celebrates its 30th anniversary this weekend.

The first recognisable e-mail marketing message was sent on 3 May, 1978 to 400 people on behalf of DEC - a now-defunct computer-maker.

What is testmy.net

testmy.net is an internet connection benchmark.  We offer Download and Upload connection speed tests.  We offer connection history logging as well as host stats.  This is a 100% free site and you can test as much as you need to.  testmy.net is able to bring you some of the most accurate results due to our centrally located US server on the UUnet / Global Crossing backbone.  Unlike some speed testing sites, testmy.net uses only highly compressed data for testing to ensure that you are testing from data that your provider has no way of compressing (therefore this site will show you what your real line speed is, not what your provider wants you to think... common among satellite providers).  Also, with 'SmarTest' Testmy.net will automatically adjust for your line speed and use the most optimal test size for your connection type.  testmy.net is a 100% word-of-mouth advertised site, so the growth and success of the site relies on it's users, so please keep visiting, and please pass this site on to friends.  You will notice that there is constant development and growth with this site, this also relies on our users input... if you encounter any bug please post in the forum under this section and if you like the site and would like to add your input to a great growing online community please join for free.

See a glitch or bug?  Or just have an idea on how to make the site better... Post in this special section of our forum.

New/Recent Change Log / Updates

  • 04.27.08 :::::: Bug Fix! - A bug that was causing test looping for some people has been resolved.   -Damon
  • 04.10.08 :::::: Larger Upload Tests OFFLINE! (for now). - There's an issue with some browsers and the larger upload speed tests, for now the 12MB and above tests have been taken offline, until the issue has been resolved. There is no ETA as of yet, but these test sizes are really only needed for MASSIVE connections with upload speeds in excess of 10Mbit, and if you have one of those massive connections this does not at all mean that you'll be getting inaccurate results, I'll keep you all posted as information develops.   -Damon
  • 03.30.08 :::::: Larger Upload Tests WORKING! - The new 12MB, 24MB and 48MB upload speed tests which were bugged have been repaired.  Go ahead and give them a go.  Thank you to those of you that reported this bug, people who report issues like that are a huge help to the site.   -Damon
  • 03.29.08 :::::: The New Server is UP! - The transfer... as always.. was not easy.  For some reason the data transfers when I change servers are always a headache.  I host other sites on my server and the other sites transfer just fine.  But TMN always has issues with transfers.  After many tries and multipul methods that I had to try I ended up basically doing the transfer by hand (instead of the more automated method that's available with some server tools I use).  All that matters is that the site is now running off the new and improved server.  More information about the transfer and the new server can be found over at Topic 22807.  If you're able to read this message that means that you are currently running off of the NEW server (it takes a while for DNS to propagate to where everyone is able to use the new server... sometimes up to 72 hours.  Although, these days it's rare for it to take any more than a few hours).  So enjoy the new server, any routing issues that any of you may have had with the last server should now be cleared up and you should now be able to get nothing but the very best and most accurate test results, just how it used to be a littler over a month ago (before I ordered the server that I'm ditching... that server was a friggen nightmare! lol).  Thanks for your patience durring the transfer process, it's called a process because it's just that... a process!  And as with any process it takes time to come to fruition.  Also, thank god my entire transfer plan has been realized!  Again, thank you for your patience.   -D
  • 03.23.08 :::::: New Server ONLINE! - My host has finally put my new server online.  I'm currently transfering the site data and all our databases over to this new server, for more information on this issue see my post in the forum under Topic 22807.  More information about this process will follow.   -D
  • 03.20.08 :::::: Larger test sizes added and linked - The 24MB and 48MB tests have been released and linked on the upload and download speed test pages.  These tests have been online for some time now but have been hidden from the public and only known to a few privileged (or resourceful) people.  I also added links for the 6MB and 12MB test on the test pages so that if you know exactly what size you need you will no longer have to wait for SmarTest to forward you.  Please keep in mind that the 71MB and 95MB tests are still going to be added once our new server goes live so keep an eye out for those.  Enjoy!   -D
  • 03.15.08 :::::: New server ordered - Awaiting my host to get it online, they don't have the CPU that I ordered in stock so this may be a few days.  The new server has been ordered to correct the current problems with the current server which my host put in the wrong datacenter, which has caused routing issues that make results inaccurate for some people.  Once this new server is online the accuracy will be back to what you all expect from testmy.net and once this is online a message will be shown on the front page of the site as well as a message entered into this change log.  The new server will be have an Intel Xeon 3060 Dual-Core Conroe Processor, 4GB of RAM and 2x 146GB 10,000 RPM SCSI/SAS HDDs.  The main reason I ordered a new server to start with was because the site needed more bandwidth and the new server sports 5TB of bandwidth /month.  The additional bandwidth will give me the option to get larger tests online for you guys, so once this new server is online keep your eyes open for the larger tests that will be made publicly available within a few days after the new server goes live.  The new test sizes that I will be releasing to the public are 48MB, 71MB and 95MB.  The 48MB test is already online but has not been made public, in the release all of the new test sizes will be fully available to anyone who wishes to use them and will be added to the SmarTest feature (which will automatically forward you if your line is fast enough to need the larger sizes).  So please be patient with me while my host gets the new server online for us, if I get a chance I'll try to work on the code needed to add the larger test sizes so that you guys won't need to wait too long.   -D
  • 02.04.08 :::::: Problems with our new server - Our new server was connected in the wrong datacenter which is causing routing issues for some people.  The routing issues are making test results inaccurate for some people.  Please be patient while I correct this problem, I apologize to any of you that are getting inaccurate results.  A new server will be put online in the correct datacenter as soon as possible.  Thank you for your patronage.   -D
  • 01.30.08 :::::: New Quad-Core server online today - Enjoy the new faster server.   -D
