I think it's funny, I actually get a few emails like this every month.  I thought that I make it pretty clear how to get the test rolling right on the homepage.. maybe not.  lol

Maybe to some it's confusing... can't make everyone happy I guess.

    Hi Tawfik,
Just go to TestMy.net and click "Test My Internet" ... this will test both upload and download speed.  Comparison to your ISP, City, Country and the World will be provided in your results.   - Hope this helps, - Damon - TestMy.net

The guts of the PCs and Macs for sale are pretty similar. What the PC hardware has going for it is the customization aspect, where a skilled person can build what he wants. The average user can't really do it without getting himself into trouble from a lot of different engineering aspects. To me, the PC and Mac OSs are where the real differences are. Apple has more control over all the hardware/OS and OS/AS interfaces and the result is their integration results in fewer anomalies than Windows. The PC manufacturers can do a good job integrating their hardware with the version of Windows that ships with the units. Some of them do a lot better job than others. When both the OS and the hardware are new, they all have a much bigger challenge. Once the user gets a machine, the likelihood of it staying secure and stable is much higher with OS X because of the tight controls Apple has in place on application software in their app stores. A savvy person can keep a PC secure and stable. A not-so-savvy person has a much bigger challenge because the applications can come from anywhere. Plus the malware developers target PCs by orders of magnitude more than Macs. One of my bigger issues with MS has been that their developer brains don't work like mine. The logic they use to name and locate functions in the OS escapes me. Too many times, after a frustrating search, my thoughts are "why would anyone put that there?" And "Why did they call it that?". That and it always takes twice as many mouse clicks to do things. Years ago, the initial cost of getting Macs was higher than the PC. It's not any more. When you load up a PC with equivalent hardware now (from a store), the Mac prices are on par. So it basically comes down to the design and quality systems of the PC supplier. In the case of Apple, their hardware design and quality are consistently among the best.

Why do PC's rule the business world and the personal computer world..? My Dell laptops have done a great job, even the 2002 still works great, of course it's obsolete by today's standards.  I like changing hardware and software on my desktops ^several PC brands) just for the experimentation kick, and I'm just your averaged user, not a geek (no pun intended). Seems some Apple users have a 'one track' mindset, or they are so technically inclined they disregard the PC as solid and functional. The PC made the computer World (Microsoft and Intel) and brought Apple along with it. I may own an Apple someday, but my first choice is the 'top' of the line Alienware machine..Apple doesn't excite me, like a PC does.. if you want a Cadillac work-horse,,get an Apple, you pay the price, ..if you want a work-horse, get a PC, and have some fun. PS. this is a friendly chat, and by any means is not to diminish any computer owners preference.. have a good day!....

Pgoodwin1 reacted to CA3LE in TestMy.net Beta program
I have A LOT of upcoming releases, many of which are going to be built around a new concept.  Because there is so much core programming being changed I'm going to do something I've never done.

I normally work on the site live and things are released as I write them... if your in the right place at the right time and you pay enough attention you can see me building sometimes.  Well, I really feel that the version I have out right now is INCREDIBLY stable... I don't want to disturb any testing or use of the site.  So I'm going to offer a beta program for those who wish to join.

To join, vote Yes on the poll above. I'll add you to a special member group and you'll be emailed with updates.  You'll also have an option in your menu that will allow you to switch between beta and release.  Smaller updates will be globally available but the major ones will be held back for the beta testers to play with first.  This will help find bugs before public release.  When I'm satisfied with the code I'll offer an option for a while to the general public to turn on the beta... after general public beta testing I'll then release it to the final.  We'll then start the whole process again for another round.

This is going to be really hard for me to do, I really hate to hold new stuff back.  But maybe doing it this way will help me spend less time on bug checking and more time of actually building.

I'm one person.  Your help with this is appreciated.  Everyone who has ever submitted a comment... you've already helped build this site.  I started with a vison but you guys expanded it.  If I'm going to keep bringing those ideas to paper I really need your help.  I have at least a couple thousand hours of programming planned just for the next 3-6 months. I need to use my time effectively, spending hundreds of hours searching for bugs is not using my time wisely.  Register (If you haven't already), vote yes above and I'll email you later when I have more information. Then, you can tell your friends that you helped build this site.

    Thanks

IMHO nobody makes better computers/OS than Apple. I've used them since 1988. And every one I've ever had was a fantastic machine that lasted for years problem free. And like you said, it just works. It hurts going to the office once a week (I'm retired now) and using the PC. And my wife's work Dell laptop she uses is only a year old, and it's just a so so laptop. Her 2006 MacBook Pro is still tooling along great. When you amortize the real costs of a Mac over a PC including OS updates, and security software costs for the PCs, the Macs are are a bargain when you price them with equivalent hardware.

Pgoodwin1 reacted to CA3LE in Include results before I signed up
    Hi Angela,
Usually you have to query the Connection ID separately to look at the results you took when you weren't logged in.   Having said that... I added a feature for you.  By default it will now include the tests taken on the same connection.  It will highlight the result yellow if it's not logged by username.  (see the screenshot)   You can also toggle the feature on and off below the results list. (see the other screenshot)   Hope this helps.  Please note that only works on the connection that you're using, if you share the page others can still only see the results logged by username.  If your IP changes those results will remain but may be lost unless you know the ID.  My next database upgrade will track your IP changes so after that you won't have to worry.  Until then, stay signed in and you'll easily track your results.     Thanks for the suggestion, please let me know what you think. - Damon - TestMy.net

Pgoodwin1 reacted to CA3LE in Tango Air good deal +manual
I was getting batteries at Fry's Electronics and ran across what I though was a great deal... it was even better than I expected and I wanted to share.
I ran across a Tango Air for only $49.99... they only had one.  AirPlay enabled, it's like Sonos but I got it for a Roosevelt.  Tango shows it for sale on their website for $199.  It was still in the box, with protective plastic on it.  It was missing instructions so I had to get a manual off their site, but it was easy to find and easy to setup.  Once it's on your network (see the simple instructions at the bottom of this post) you can output any AirPlay enabled devices (iOS, you can also use AirAudio on Andriod, I've also output from my Mac's, as easy as switching the audio output... I'm sure that you could get it to work on pretty much any system.  Even if it didn't have AirAudio and you used the aux input it's well worth twice what I paid).   Much greater than Bluetooth.  It outputs audio without compression and when you control the volume it actually communicates with the Tango Air... not simply adjusting the device volume.  All seamless, tiny lag but worth it for the audio quality.  Totally clear audio, as long as you and the Tango are on the same network.  The speakers themselves are high quality and crystal clear.  Delivering clean highs and mids as well as deep bass... Positioning the speaker next to a wall or under a table enhances the bass further.  Very direct connection between your music and the speaker.  Amazing sound for the size of the unit.  I feel like I stole it @ $50.  Very high quality feel too, like something Apple would build.  If they had more of them at that price I'd buy more but I think that I just got lucky.  It surely cost them more than that to produce.   ... I've also seen firmware upgrades so I'm sure they could be hacked to create a network of units that work together.  Tango should make that available, it's definitely possible, why not?   If you can find a good deal I highly recommend picking one up.  I have crappy single speaker bluetooth units I've paid more for.  With this you get two tweeters, two full range drivers, one subwoofer and passive radiator... not to mention AirAudio.  Glad I fount it, I would have gladly paid more.   Simple Instructions Hookup is as simple as hooking the device up by USB boot up the Tango quick tap on the setup button next to the USB... it asks you on your device to share the WiFi settings... allow and about 30 seconds later it's on your network.   Manual setup Hook up the USB and boot up the Tango hold the setup button next to the USB input for about 5 seconds till it starts flashing Search for WiFi networks (on your device or computer) and you'll see 'Tango XXXXX' ... connect to that network Open your browser to http://192.168.1.12 (the http server address for the Tango).  From there setup is self explanatory.  If not, look at the manual.

Pgoodwin1 reacted to CA3LE in Thanks! Aussie Speed Test?
    Hi Matt,
Thanks for visiting.  Have you tried the speed test server in Singapore?  I know that's still a little ways away but I've seen people in AU pulling decent speeds from there.   I'm sure I'll have a server there soon.  It's only been a few months since I released the program to anyone who has a server and servers are already popping up all over the place.  If you have a webserver in AU or know of someone who does you can easily setup a mirror of your own.  You can have it privately for your own use or share it with others.  It will work great even with a simple VPS server.  Just go to https://testmy.net/make-a-speed-test -- contact me after you've started the process and you can have your own server running in no time.  If you decide to do that it will be at least a week before I can finish the setup on my end, I'm leaving for Monument Colorado in the morning to take some much needed time off.   I appreciate the support.  If you like what I've built, my labor of love, please spread the word.  TestMy.net is word-of-mouth and I rely on my visitors to keep it going.   Kind Regards & Happy Testing!   - Damon Mueller - TestMy.net

    Hi again Matt,
Thanks for the congratulations.  I also forgot to say your welcome in my previous email.  I've been building my site since I was 16 years old... I'm 31 now.  It means a lot to me when people give me positive feedback.  Makes the countless nights of programming worth it when I know it's helping people.  Feedback keeps me pushing to build a better, more powerful system.   50-100 /megabit, geeze!  Bandwidth is definitely expensive in Australia.  South Africa is another place that's really expensive.  A dedicated box isn't necessary though. Of course it would be better but to tell you the truth even my own mirrors are single core VPS with only 1GB RAM. (my home server however is a very powerful dual hex core xeon, 24 processing threads, 16GB RAM and RAID 5 SSD... but that server has a TON of database work it does constantly and it also handles a large majority of the testing).  I've developed the program to require minimal resources.  My main server does most of the heavy lifting and what resides on your server is a lightweight controller.  My mirrors average 0.00 load despite heavy use... it's so stable that I've had servers with indefinite up times.  Most of my servers I have on right now have never been rebooted because all they run is my program.. it's super stable and doesn't require much to do the job right.  The most important factor is the uplink.  100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps uplink is recommended.  Hopefully linking into a provider with at least 1x10G.  Also, if you have an option to do so... pick the fastest hard drive solution available.  If you have SAS available, go with that.  As for the amount of space, it's minimal, 25GB SAS is what I have on my own VPS mirrors.  Hard drive performance can impact the results at REALLY high speeds, so heads up.
It would be really cool to have an Aussie server available for my users.  The amount of bandwidth drawn depends on how many people like the server.  Over time as more people realize that there is an AU server you'd get more and more traffic to it.  Most people will still use my servers however so I wouldn't expect more than 1-10GB/day of transfer.  If bandwidth is an issue the mirror can be made private, a cap can be set or you can turn it off on your end or by emailing me any time.  So far, everyone who's had concerns about that hasn't had an issue.
Hosting a mirror can help drive traffic to your site too.  Especially once I pull the program out of beta and make it more known that the mirrors exist   Bandwidth will go up a little once I make them more known too... but so will your link exposure.  On the results page and test page there is a link to your site and clicks from that could result in conversions for your business.  It will at the very least drive a little traffic.   By the way, this is completely free to you and your visitors... just like everything I offer.  In the future you'll also be able to co-brand it with your logo, modify the layout to resemble your site and call upon the program within your site.  I've barely scratched the surface of my plans with that branch of my site.  What I have released right now is just a proof of concept and starting point for a much larger concept. I hope you stick around and watch it develop over time.   Let me know when you're ready.  And don't you worry, I'll have a great break!  Feel free to email me even though I'm away...  I can still help you and answer any questions.  I'll probably have some downtime while I'm there and it only takes me a few minutes to set that up for you once you're got your end finished.  It will only have to wait if you're having issues setting it up.   Cheers, - Damon   P.S.   By the way, have you tried the multithread speed test I offer?  I was just looking over some speeds in AU and saw some people with some really good scores using that method.  When you use the multithread test it pulls the information from all of my US servers simultaneously .. so the resulting score is very comprehensive.  You might want to try that.   Turn this feature on and off by visiting >> https://testmy.net/multithread  ... I just created this a couple weeks ago so it's not well known yet.  TestMy.net is the only speed test that's able to test from multiple locales at the same time.  In the near future I'll expand this to all my mirrors (done) and give users the option to test from their own selection of servers.  You'll be able to test pulling data from all of my servers world-wide at the same time if you want to... giving you a resulting score that represents your Internet speed across the globe.  Pretty cool huh?   Personally, when I turn on multithread I'm able to pull up to 30Mbps of extra speed, due to the fact that my provider to at my home is limiting single thread transactions.  Lots of ISPs are doing that.  Another thing that TMN is able to pick up on that other speed tests don't notice. The classic method is also able to passively detect more issues that can slow you down.  So it's not a replacement to my normal test... it's just a different way to render the data.   Thought I'd let you know about that, - Damon

I'm on TWC Cincinnati. The first of the year they upgraded their services. I'm on the turbo 15 Mbps down, 1 Mbps up plan. Since the first of the year, I've had pretty consistent results testing here showing that they are meeting the 15 Mbps down. I get about 0.8 Mbps up speeds measured here. Prior to the first of the year upgrade, I was only getting about 8 Mbps down and the same 0.8 up speed I got prior to the upgrade. Their old plan said up to 10 Mbps, and I very rarely ever got 10 except for an occasional burst. The newer service is consistently right around the 15 Mbps speed they advertise. This upgrade was likely only for the TWC Cincinnati area though. Your results may be worse if the equipment and service they're providing you is like the older equipment was here. They didn't change my cable modem, only the service on their stuff outside my house.

Yes. As long as electronics are kept cool, they can run a long long time. Some of the newer modems even de-power their ports to save energy, so at night when you're not accessing the LAN ports, the modem is basically just idling and not dissipating much power. Not sure if yours has the energy saver stuff in it, but even if it doesn't, during long periods of doing little work, the thing will have no problem running all night, as long as it's in an area that allows what little heat they generate to rise above it and away from it. As long as there's reasonable air space around it and the air isn't hot, those things should last.

That ad stuff doesn't really bother me if they are fixed ads in dedicated space that isn't interfering with or taking away excessive space on a page. The annoying pop-ups that come back even after you hit the close box and hover over what you're looking at drive me nuts. And if you disable pop-ups, too many things break that you need pop-ups for.

    And you're welcome

True , but honestly, if it were not for ads, several of my sites would not exist. No other way top pay for the server ect unless I sell something , a service or such.

Like testmy.net , afaik this is still totally free due to ad revenue ( although I have no authority to speak of such things ) - I've never paid for a test here, and the upkeep and bandwidth here is not at all in the slightest inexpensive i know.

So ads are a good thing.

At any rate, much appreciated bud, this has been a thorn in my side for a while now , and has gotten much more problematic.
