If only I could get my iphone to cook, do laundry, and clean, I could enjoy living single.

That would be the next fad, 'where is my iphone - shoot, I forgot to bring it in the shower with me' lol
At any rate, wish you well with your ISP

Pgoodwin1 reacted to [email protected] in Hello from Argentina
Nice to meet you all.
I'm sorry to say I'm only here to get my ISP a report of all the times they fail to give me the speed I'm paying for.
Anyway, I'm an Electronics Engineer (sort of/almost) and a big fan of Arduinos, DIY and the maker movement. I also program a little JS with meteor and 0MQ.
So if you have one of those epiphanies like "it would be really awesome if I could control the water temperature in the shower with my iphone" and want to know if it's possible or how to do it, then let me know and I can point you in the right direction.

That works with any 111 sequence...
111*111 = 12321
1111*111 = 1234321
Etc...
111,111*111,111 = 12345654321
Etc...
Math is riddled with tricks like that. One of the beautiful aspects of math is that it has patterns, the same patterns are displayed in nature. On both macro and micro scales. Math is amazing on many levels. It has always facinated me.

That last big number is 394,573,089,701,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 times bigger than Avogardo's Number 6.022E23 which is the number of molecules in a mole of a substance. So yes, that is a lot of combinations.
Oh. And I forgot: 111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12345678987654321

I want to share something with you that some of you may not know. Knowing this might save you from being defrauded or having your identity stolen.
Obviously your password should be secure but even with the most secure password imaginable it does little if you're going out every day telling people the password. You might do this often and not even realize it!
Let me ask you this. When you find a new website that you like and you sign up, do you use the same password that you use for your primary email? If you do, you're asking for trouble.
Malicious webmasters (and hackers who hack legit sites) can log that information and attempt to login to your email account that you supplied them with during registration. If you use the same password to signup as you use for your email and they're able to get in... the fun for them has just begun.
Do you bank, get receipts from online retailers or associate that same email address with anything financial or personal? They will search and scour your inbox and outbox for anything of value. If your inbox has nothing of value, they'll use it to spam people.
The password you use for your primary email needs to be secure. You don't necessarily need to get crazy on it but keep this stuff in mind when you set important passwords.
Here are some suggestions and best practices for strong passwords.
Password should contain characters from at least three of these categories: uppercase (A - Z); lowercase (a - z); base 10 digits (0 - 9); non - alphanumeric (e.g. !, $, #, or %); Unicode characters (if allowed). Password should not contain more than 3 characters from your account name For extra protection don't use any dictionary words. Even if you modify them slightly, it's build into many brute force algorithms to check for dictionary words and common modifications on dictionary words (use my nick as an example, CA3LE = CABLE... or 1337 = LEET ...CA3LE = 1337 too - simple math, lol). That will make it nearly impossible to hack, each addition makes it exponentially harder to figure out the password.
Let me give you some examples with math. Well use a length of 8 characters in our password and see the difference in the number of combinations.
If you use only a-z in your passwords
26^8 = 208,827,064,576 combinations A-Z and a-z
(26+26)^8 = 53,459,728,531,456 combinations A-Z, a-z, 0-9
(26+26+10)^8 = 218,340,105,584,896 combinations A-Z, a-z, 0-9 & special characters
(26+26+10+32)^8 = 6,095,689,385,410,820 combinations A-Z, a-z, 0-9, special characters & unicode characters (currently 1,114,112 characters and growing - Unicode Lookup is a cool website to check on that)
(26+26+10+32+1114112)^8 = 2.37532993765908E48 ... so 237,532,993,765,908,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 combinations See how much harder the password becomes. Although, like I said, if you're using it elsewhere it might be sifted making it's complexity null.
Personally, I have a little list of stupid passwords that I use to sign up for stupid things... sites that I'm not buying stuff from. Then a list of difficult passwords I use for everything else. If I think a site looks a little shady I'll register with a junk address on top of using the junk password.
I'm not suggesting you make your password Uf∞8&iE¶ª2^;k¡∞¢•. But for god sake you can't use password123 anymore and you can't use the same email and password to signup on other sites. Trust me, it's dumb. Always has been but even more today.

Pgoodwin1 reacted to CA3LE in Command line Speedtest?
First, welcome.
You know what, a lot of people have asked for that over the years... I'm going to put something together for you. I don't know how long it will take me, I'll update this thread once I've played around a bit. But before I can do anything I need to get my Windows virtual machine back up. Been meaning to do that for months anyways.
I'll check out Centrastage... looks complex. Doesn't seem like something that could quickly and easily be used by your clients. Why not just send them to TestMy.net? Why do you necessarily need a command line program? I'll be happy to put one together for you... actually one of my first tests was a simple command line program, I think it would be fun to put that together.

Pgoodwin1 reacted to Cravit8 in Hello from Gainesville, Florida!
Hi guys,
I came across this site recently and kinda like it.
Crazy thing is I had a tech rep out to my house and he actually had to install the modem after a splitter to reduce the dB it was receiving because the signal was so strong from the street to the house that it was causing issues.
That change along with upgrading my modem from a Motorola SB5101 DOCSIS 2.0 to a Motorola SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0 and my 18/2 cable service has been solid at 20/3 according to testmy.net
Anyway,
The big gulp huh? Well, see ya later!

Pgoodwin1 reacted to CA3LE in Name the testsSpecific test IDs
I've added compatibility for multiple identifiers. Enjoy!
I added a WiFi identifier to the drop down. I know of a way I can detect that with android 2.2+, if I can figure it out for iPhone I'll enable wifi detection for mobile devices. Give me some time on that.
Please let me know if you see anything out of the ordinary.

Pgoodwin1 got a reaction from CA3LE in Need Router Suggestions for RCN 50MBPS
There's a site called SmallNetBuilder that has very good technical reviews by knowledgeable people. This is some research I did about a year ago. I look for products that have less than 20% of their reviews at 1 or 2 stars out of 5. Anything more than that is a red flag to me that something is wrong. Then I calculate a price per performance ratio in $ per star which is an indicator of how much I'm paying for quality.
WAN to LAN price/performance - these were the routers with the better price per performance ratio as rated on SmallNetBuilder's site.
In order of $/star:
ESR9855G EnGenius Multimedia Enhanced Wireless N Gaming Router with Gigabit $20.50/star. $82 Newegg, 4.5 stars/22reviews on Google, 3. 1-2 star reviews 14%, probably not enough reviews to be meaningful.
E3200 Cisco High Performance Dual-Band N Router gigabit $27.25/star $109 minus $30 special Amazon 4 stars/142 reviews, 15 1-2 star reviews 11%, 4.5 stars on Google/485 reviews
RT-N56U ASUS Black Diamond Dual-Band Gigabit Wireless-N Router $31/star $124, 4 stars/449 reviews, 82. 1-2 stars 18%
Airport Extreme Base Station 5th gen, A1408, MD031LL/A, $170, 4.5 stars/135 reviews, 16. 1-2star 12%, 10 1-star $37.78/star
WNDR4500 Netgear. N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router $45/star. $180 4 star/160 reviews, 42. 1-2 star. 26%
--------------------------------------------------------------------
not ranked in any particular order
Product HD Media Router 2000 DIR-827 gigabit D-Link $142. 3.5 stars/6 reviews amazon
Product N750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router WNDR4000 Company NETGEAR $126. 3.5 stars/168 reviews, 39 1-star Amazon
Product Maximum Performance Wireless-N Router Linksys E4200 gigabit Cisco $159 - $30 gift card special, 3.5 stars/385 reviews/100 one -two star reviews
Product 300Mbps Wireless N Router with Gigabit Switch. ESR9850 EnGenius $60 amazon. 3.5 stars/22reviews
Product N600 wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router. WNDR3700v2 Netgear. $99 Amazon, 3.5 stars/781, 155. 1-star
Product N750 DB Wireless Dual-Band N+ Router
F9K1103 Belkin $100 Amazon 3stars/129 reviews, 50 1-2star
They not only have good reviews on SmallNetBuilder, but they have some great performance plots of a lot of products. I used their price/performance plots to select routers to go assess for price and user experience/quality (star ratings). There's likely new ones on the plots since a year ago besides the ones I looked at above.
Note that the LinkSys E4200 did appear to have some issues, as 100 of the 385 reviews were 1-2 stars. However, that was a year ago, and maybe they've released some firmware updates that fixed their issues.
Note that the Cisco E3200 though was rated very good, and one of the best buys at the time. So go figure.
I ended up buying the Apple AirPort Extreme which is a great value. People always bad mouth it for being expensive, but it looks very competitive when you start assessing the user experience and quality ratings....one of the top 4 after I got done looking at all of those above. I do have 2 Macs, 2 iPhones, and 2 iPads in the house, so I was really just trying to assure myself that it was worth the investment. It has worked flawlessly for a year. The other ones at the top would likely be very good choices as well, excepting maybe the first one (EnGenius) because at the time it really didn't have enough reviews to be relevant-it likely has a lot more reviews by now.

Pgoodwin1 reacted to CA3LE in Can old test results be mass deleted?
There will be multiple / mass delete and select options in the next database upgrade. I should have that for you all soon. But no, I'm not at all concerned about the space taken up. I encourage my users to never delete records. It's kinda cool to look back your history. Especially once you've gathered years of results. I'm more concerned about my bandwidth... Storage is never an issue. My main server has 500 GB free on raid 5 SSD... It will take billions of entries before space would be an issue. Bandwidth on the other hand...
I'm going to have to order 10+ TB in advance for next month if I want to get it at half price. Luckily the public supports my advertisers so I can afford the kind of hosting this site needs to be accurate and also support so many users. ... thanks everyone. I promise to continue developing this as well as upgrading my hardware and networking as demand rises. Traffic to TestMy.net is hitting harder than it has in many years... I figure without changing anything I can comfortably support 5X current traffic. Well over 100k users a day. And if we need more test resource... I'll put it online in an instant. Just keep spreading the word. TestMy.net is word-of-mouth only. I appreciate the support.

Pgoodwin1 reacted to jackdashack in The General Dissing of Comcast I Suppose!
Thanks for your input. I know of the lists of acceptable modems for replacement. I just hadn't looked into it far enough to know if there was one that handled the telephone too. This Xfinity has the phone line plugged into it which feeds back to all the phones. I suspect there is one no doubt. I'll check that more closely. And thanks to you up there in the "clouds" with all your data. lol I do appreciate your response. Jack ":-D
