Thank you @Pgoodwin1 for the heads up

@dnjSerran I changed your username.  The issue was with the "&" symbol in your username.  This character is actually disallowed in registration... not sure how it got through so I'm going to have to do a check up on that part of the registration process.

Sorry my response took longer than normal.

If you'd like a different username please let me know what you'd like me to change it to.  I'm happy to help.

What was happening is when you were visiting your stats it was encountering that illegal character... it looks like it was using what it could up to the point of that illegal character.  So you were pulling stats for the member "David" instead of "David & J...".

For your own privacy this username is better anyways.  When I notice usernames that have real people's names I usually contact the member to ask if they'd like it changed.

A reminder for anyone who needs a username change.  Simply send me a private message saying "I'd like to change my username." with the new username.  These requests are usually fulfilled within 24H.

I eventually got a hold of a supervisor. He reluctantly admitted that with everyone on quarantine and at home streaming Netflix and whatnot, that my area is legitimately out of bandwidth.
Once this is all over with, we;ll see if that's true. ?

That's not surprising. I'm seeing the same at my data-center. They're running several 100Gbit connections, but they also host a bunch of infrastructure for Netflix and Hulu, and they told me that "due to the significant amount of traffic to several of our customers, you may see bandwidth impacts." I got another ticket this week that said they're recarving up their bandwidth to limit those two in particular. Going to be interesting to see how that goes.

It’s a pain to have to go thru this stuff I know. I suggest you call them instead of emailing. Be polite but persistent. If you don’t get satisfaction from talking to their first level support person, ask to speak to a supervisor. I assume you have some kind of problem ticket number that your emails are posting to.

See how the classic test also has more resolution.  You can see more about how the transfer flowed.  Under My Results scroll to the details and click the Test_ID.

To fluctuate between 6 and 18 Mbps... that's pretty heavy.

    Site note:

I was curious when the multithread test started, ended up being a year earlier than I remember.  June 2013.

I don’t know what kind of average and stability you should expect at those high speeds. Maybe someone with experience at those type speeds will chime in and comment. There’s a lot of things that have to be perfect to attain near-gigabit speeds.

No. It’s not normal. You should be getting a pretty consistent speed of 90 - 100 and maybe a little higher

I noticed that Hughes average upload speed has been consistently slower (0.7 Mbps) since 3/16/2020.  About half of the long running average.

HughesNet upload speed hasn't been this slow since Feb 2017.

But even with HughesNet upload averages running at half... you're personally running at less than half of that already low average.

If I had to guess, Hughes is having a hard time with the influx of extra traffic since 3/16/2020.

Go to The Database pop up above. Select Provider Results and Select Hughes. Select last 100 results. Avg download speed on TestMy is 16.1 Mbps. You can play around with the number of test results to see more history

Just thought I would introduce myself. I've been using the speed test as a member since Sept when I signed onto a 1gig connection.
I've been online since the 14.4 modem days and can remember downloading my first copy of win98 on a 36k LMAO
It took days back then. So I love watching these numbers fly

It wasn't quickly approved because you posted your personal contact information.  I was on my phone when your post came in and I like to make those type of edits on a desktop computer.

Sorry it took longer than usual.  Kids were playing on all my main computers when your post came in last night.  They're getting a little stir crazy lately.  Snow's melted today so we're going to get them out in a bit. ?

In the future, on any website... you should refrain from publicly posting your contact information.  At the very least is can be used to phish you.

Like @Pgoodwin1 said, run some tests so we can get some more data on what you're already working with.  The zip code you provided can help us determine if there are better choices in your area... so that's ok to post.  If we need your address to help a moderator or myself (admin) will request it from you in a personal message (PM).  Don't share your location and phone number otherwise.  For your own personal online protection.

I do not know how stable you can expect your results to be using Ethernet in your house at this high ISP plan speeds.  If you’re not connected directly to the modem gateway then wiring length and quality may be coming into play. Outside your house, I don’t know how stable their system is either at those high speeds. My plan is a Charter (Time Warner) 200 Mbps plan and it varies about +/- 10 % typically Round 210 Mbps. That’s via wireless. The one computer I have that’s connected via Ethernet typically maxes out around 150 Mbps though. Not sure if that’s because my house cabling is CAT5E instead of CAT6.

If they continue to bill you for service that is not provided, it can get their attention if you file a complaint with the FCC:
    https://consumercomplaints.fcc.gov/hc/en-us

Some states have consumer protection bureaus that you can use as well, but mine refers broadband issues to the FCC.
In the past filing complaints seems to have attracted some attention.

Yes... and no.  You still need to shoot me a PM, just say, "I'd like to change my username to ___________".

I have a program on my end that queries the database and outputs manual SQL commands that I then run against the database server.  I input two (before / after) usernames and it gives me all the commands to run to make the change... cut 'n paste from there.

It's a much quicker process than before but I'd still like to make it automated.  At most a few people a month request name changes, if I get more requests it will justify the time expense it will take me to make it fully automated.

So shoot me a PM if you'd like your username changed.

    Me, "What is, apple tv?!"

    Damn.

For reals though, it's exactly what your title says, "little black box that replaces my tower" --- it IS the tower, just smaller.

I'd only refer to this as a node if the computer itself isn't doing the processing.  Then it would basically be just a medium for i/o (input/output... keyboard, mouse, monitor, usb).

Your company may be doing it like that but more likely your computer is still running the software physically.

A notable example of this type of computer is the Intel Nuc

They can be spec'd as low as $250 (with a Celeron J4005 - 2 threads) and go all the way up to north of $1600 with (a Xeon E-2286M - 16 threads!) -- you can also get kits that have no memory and drive for like $135. -- can make for some pretty dense computing.

There are all kinds of mini PCs like this.  Search Amazon for "mini PC" and watch some youtube reviews to find a good one at a good price.  It's ever changing.

In 2015 I may have said that this could replace your tower with something like this for lighter workloads like general browsing.  Today... you can get a lot done in a much smaller package.  Having said that, if you spec'd a full tower at the same price you'd have WAY more power.  ...can't really fit an RTX in one of these.   -- also I feel it's a huge waste of a processor if you aren't going to take advantage it's extra PCIe lanes.  But there's something to be said for such a nice form factor.  There are many use cases where this is a much better solution.

    Welcome Mobycore,

I think in the end you'll find that TestMy.net more closely represents your real world performance.

I see that you've been testing with single thread, there's also a multithread speed test.  Other speed tests usually default to multithread.

In single thread mode (default) the page itself becomes the file you're downloading.  In multithread a bunch of image elements are loaded.  In either case the data is random, generated by the program.  The transfer is timed and calculated Time/Size to arrive at the throughput.

Depends on the server and the connections between your computer and the host.  If your passing through a 1000 Mbps router/switch or if you're testing on one of my 1000 Mbps servers then that will limit you to 1000 Mbps.  I hope to have all servers upgraded to 10Gbps in the near future.

Upload has a limitation, due to the small test sizes.  But a multithread upload test is in development that no longer has those limitations.  If your upload speed is over 300 Mbps right now, you'll peg the current upload speed test.

Different connections handle the different sizes differently.  Sometimes larger sizes allow the connection to warm up and average out higher.  I've seen others perform better on small bursts then get throttled.  TestMy.net can help you discover odd things like this because of the odd options it has.

Let me know what browser you're using and the specs of your computer.  I need to look closer at both sets of results too.

What did you get on LTE?  Set and identifier on each device.  It will help us keep better track of each one.  Go to https://testmy.net/mysettings and change the identifier.
