Alright, so I just had FiOs installed yesterday, bought the 75/35 plan. Here is the result from Speedtest.net and testmy.net via Wifi on my laptop.

Hi everyone,

I've been doing a lot of research and spent a lot of time working with Netflix and TWC tier 3 support trying to figure out what is wrong. Basically, even though speed tests (speakeasy and speedtest.net) show expected bandwidth when I test (20 down 2 up) when I stream either Netflix or Vudu I can't get HD. I have gone so far as to disconnect my entire network and connect my PC (brand new) diectly to the modem and try to stream. TWC tier 3 support says everything looks good on their end. The tech even bumpted my up to 30 down and 5 up to see if that helped and I sitll wasn't able to stream HD. I also replaced my modem with a TWC unit just to make sure it wasn't my SurfBoard 6141. So it has become clear that the speedtests were only giving me a peak or avg measurment on a fairly small packet of data and that I needed to try a larger file download to try and see how the connection held up over time. I found testmy.net and started using their speedtest right away. Customized to 200MB download and 2MB upload and watched the Test in Progress (TiP) chart. As I feared the fast speed advertised and verified by TWC is only transient. Although the download speed spikes initially, you can see how the variance would be a problem for streaming. How do I go about getting TWC to address this? It seems this has gotten worse over the last month or so, as well, because we used to watch Netflix in HD a lot and it would usually work, now it almost never works. Netflix claims it is inconcievalbe that their Amazon cload servers could be slow due to traffic...at this point I'm taking their word for it. Does anyone have any explanation as to why I would see this kind of variance? TWC says their connection should be consistent but it clearly isn't. Any technical expertise or advise on how to proceed would be welcome.

Thanks!

Command line Speedtest?

Hello all

I'm looking at ways that i can conduct a speedtest via a windows command prompt (shell)

I have clients that complain of slow internet speed and would like a way of testing from there computer (or several) via a script or on a remote command shell

I've started to use Centrastage (google it if interested) which does a host of things! i have used WGET to get a file but out put is not really as desired

I'd like the results like testmy.net Mbps rather than KB/s

Any ideas? is there a way with testmy?

Qwesterylink has New FO ran so Im Curious about Quality Speed etc.

So back when Qwesterylink was just Qwest, they had Horrific speeds (or lack of speed) I signed up for the 1.5 MB/s Down Tier and when I complained about the speeds being about 786KB/s Down was informed I was to far away from CO and was not going to get the Speed Tier I ordered but they did not lower my Rate to the lower package Price and so I dropped them and went with Comcast Possibly AT&T at the time not sure.

Supposedly they have just finished their Fibre Optic Upgrade which puts the FO Junction about 2 Blocks away from my House and of course the ground pounders were out banging on everyones door trying to get people to hook up with The internet/phone/Direct TV package.

They claim they can now guarantee (If I pay their tech to install the DSL router) 40MB/s Download speeds at my house.

I have had Comcast for 7 years and I have been getting _______'d for some time by them and am so sick of my bill going higher and higher and higher.

Started at $99 a month for the Phone/Internet/TV Package and without getting any better Service/More Channels etc. it has climbed to about $200 a month.

I see they have a Internet/PH Package for $92 a month Guaranteed 40MB/s Download speed and Guaranteed 5 year no increase and was thinking about dropping my Internet and Phone with Comcast and just getting basic Cable only (as I can watch Netflix,Vudu,Hulu, you tube etc. on my Sony Streaming unit or computer hooked to TV via HDMI cable but was curious as to what others thought of the Internet Speed in Reality and Quality of service Ie down time /Phone quality etc.

Thanks.

If the service is decent I can shed about $75 or more off my monthly bills

Coast to Coast Multithread Speed Test

Hey testers!

I came up with something new yesterday. It came together better than I had imagined. It's actually a twist on an old technique I used to use.

So, the normal download speed test streams the data, as you would read a document. This new method loads elements that are able to be simultaneously downloaded, in a way that allows your browser to max out.

I achieve speed far greater using this method, confirmed by readings from the controller. It taxes my connection so hard it causes my Pandora to pause and skip. That's when you know you're pulling all it's got (confirms that I'm pulling the same speeds I get from Usenet and torrents... still 50 Mbps below what Cox advertises for my package). The speed builds faster and is held longer... but I've also seen in my test bed where the opposite is true, the configuration and the browsers optimization and performance come into play for sure. If for example the browser is only set to allow a limited number of concurrent connections, then performance on this test will obviously suffer.

This in no way is meant to replace the download test I have now, they are two totally separate methods and can both be used in their own way to find issues. They're both correct... they just request the information in different ways so the result is different. The normal test finds things that multithreading would hide. The information from the multithreaded test can be just as useful. In my opinion comparing the results of the two test types can lead users to discover and resolve more issues easier.

Okay, I blabbed for long enough. For anyone that stuck around... Turn on multithreading - switch the server or follow that link again to turn it off. This only works with the download speed test and disables TiP when enabled.

Realize that this method could be more resource intensive. That's the point to a test like this... you want to tax your resources. It crashed one of my VPS servers early in its development... although I haven't seen a problem since. Having said that, I also saw zero issues when testing on desktop, tablets and smartphones. Test with this option and let me know if you find anything weird.

-D

Really Need some advice on changing some settings!

OK, I am a online gamer. Yea, it lags from time to time. Now I just saw someone suggest this!!

If your using a realtek network adapter, They suggest trying this.

Go into advance mode on the card settings, Disable the TCP Check Sum and UPD Check Sum settings. By default they are set to to RX&TX Enabled. They seemed to think it MAY help.

. Now I am on Windows 7. SO.......I know they said something about checking ping times to see if disabling these setting help or not.

So in windows 7 how do I check the ping times.I am guessing lower ping times, better ping times.

Playing Guid wars 2, so maybe I should check my ping times with them???

Yes I have everything written down so I can change it back. Just need to know Should I try it?? Or is it a BAD idea???

Forgot to ask, if I do make changes to the card, Do I need to Reboot the computer every time???

Multithread

Hi!

I've read somewhere that testmy.net avoids using multiple threads to show 'the real speed' of a line instead of 'squeezing out the last bit'...

I don't really agree.

In my situation, testmy.net doesn't show 'my speed' at all. I currently own 4 Internet links and load balance them with round robin.

When I do a multithreaded download, I get up to 40 MBit/s, but as testmy.net doesn't multithread if I have bad luck my slowest line is tested and the result is only 2.6 MBit/s.

hey guys, some of ya know i built a new system not too long ago. and last night i tried to open battlefield 3 and it just came up with a blue screen (not the bsod, just a plain blue screen) with grey lines all over it in like a zig zag pattern and locked up the pc. i rebooted and all was fine.

today i just now got home from work and turned the pc on and before windows even loaded i was greeted with the "windows has stopped working properly"....blah blah blah we prevented hardware failure blah blah screen. the bsod was so hard to read because the grey lines were back....i rebooted and went to safe mode and the lines were still there....so i shut down and booted normally and all is fine again. any ideas?

i have noticed that my microphone (blue snowball) seems to always be flagged as a problem (every time i boot it says the drivers are corrupted). i know its weird but im wondering if it being plugged in to the usb ports it is messing with some boot stuff...honestly it sounds far fetched but i've had a pc lock up until i unplugged a printer from it to boot....

either that or more likely its my graphics card.....which i hope to the computer gods its not....

any ideas?

XBox Live Speed test question

You know I always wondered what the up/download speeds were from my XBox since I'm running wirelessly (not by choice). Well when M$ put a IE app on the XBox I was happy. So I found two HTML5 speed testers. testmy.net and speedof.me.
I did the test then to my surprise got a 1.5 MB download and a 2.7 MB upload results (average). I was surprised because I pay for 25 MB down and 20 MB up. So I decided to do the same test from my wireless laptop in the same room in the same spot my XBox is placed. I got 23 MB down and 19 MB up (on average). This test is from CA to a server in TX. So why the big difference in speeds??? while I also know ping is a major factor when it comes to game play, streaming video does not rely mostly on ping, its all about bandwidth. So I ask... does anybody know why the XBox speeds are so slow??? BTW before people ask; the XBox has a port opened (port forward) by itself. All games show my port as "open".

Also I don't see a ping result, am I overlooking something?
