Does anyone know why there is such a significant difference between the two? I enjoy FF more, but if IE is that fast, well...

Well, the theoretical limit on dialup is 53.3Kbps... what speed do you connect at?

Usually 50.6kbps, occasionally lower or higher. What I really want to know is what causes the significant difference. It's weird, unless IE just has a burst speed while it tests. It takes longer to load the
'downloading data" page in IE than in Firefox.

Try the 579kB test with both and see what happens... it'll take a while but will be more accurate as well.

Ok, here's the 579kb test. Still a significant difference:

IE:
:::.. Download Stats ..:::
Connection is:: 58 Kbps about 0.1 Mbps (tested with 579 kB)
Download Speed is:: 7 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net  (main)
Test Time:: 2006/03/25 - 8:38am
Bottom Line:: 1X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 146.29 sec
Tested from a 579 kB file and took 82.391 seconds to complete
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)
Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 2.42 % of your hosts average (qwest.net)
Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-NL3MA08BE

Firefox:
:::.. Download Stats ..:::
Connection is:: 43 Kbps about 0 Mbps (tested with 579 kB)
Download Speed is:: 5 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net  (main)
Test Time:: 2006/03/25 - 8:35am
Bottom Line:: 1X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 204.8 sec
Tested from a 579 kB file and took 110.969 seconds to complete
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.1) Gecko/20060111 Firefox/1.5.0.1
Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 1.79 % of your hosts average (qwest.net)
Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/stats/id-328C4X790

Why is there such a wide gap between the speeds? Isn't FF supposed to be faster? The FF page speeds are infinitely better than IE's, but why is IE faster with downloads?

What extensions are you running on FF?  What toolbars do you have installed in IE?

What extensions are you running on FF?  What toolbars do you have installed in IE?

FF: Fasterfox 1.0.3 & Yahoo! Toolbar
IE: No toolbars
I suppose this could account for the difference, but I really don't know.

It's significant for dial-up. What makes IE so fast? :?: @brock01: Not the DL speed, but the difference between 43-58kbps.
