I would never have guessed that they could get this much mileage out of a car!  :-P
Just in case you were looking, this might be interesting. I did not think I was.
Wow. You have to admit 66 is a bunch.

1. Honda Insight  MPG Hwy: 66
2006 Honda Insight 5-Spd MT  *MSRP $19,330  *INVOICE $18,057

2. Honda Civic  MPG Hwy: 51
2006 Honda Civic Coupe DX 5-Spd AT *MSRP $15,360  *INVOICE $14,056

3. Toyota Prius  MPG Hwy: 51
2006 Toyota Prius Liftback  *MSRP $21,725 *INVOICE $20,006

4. Volkswagen Jetta  MPG Hwy: 47
2006 Volkswagen Jetta Value Edition 2.5L *MSRP $17,900 *INVOICE $17,049

5. Volkswagen Golf  MPG Hwy: 44

9. Volkswagen Jetta  MPG Hwy: 41

10. Honda Civic  MPG Hwy: 40
2006 Honda Civic Coupe DX 5-Spd MT *MSRP $14,560 *INVOICE $13,327

Since the Honda won, I will give a little more info:
Gas Mileage: 60 mpg city / 66 mpg highway
Engine: V3, SOHC, 1.0 Liter
Horsepower: 73 @5700 Torque: 79 @1500 ft-lbs
Weight: 1850 lbs. Lbs per HP: 25.34
Trans: Manual
Drive: FWD
Fuel Capacity: 10.60 gallons  Fuel Type: Gas/Electric

At todays prices of about $3, that would be about $31.80 to fill up. But a range of 699.6 miles. Reality would be less of course.

Enjoy.

and i won't believe it either. the mileage values given vary greatly from real life on hybrids. if you drive it in moderate traffic you might even get them. but once you hit the highway and the batteries run out the fuel consumption goes way up. so your long distance driving range drops way down.

as for real mileaga in a compact look at the volkswagen fox, a little 2 door thingy. (not available in the states to my knowledge. sigh.

with the 1.4 l diesel it gets 55 mpg highway and 38 mpg city. costs less than 18.000 euros with every available option. (about 21.500 $us)
69 hp and 114 ft-lbs of torque.

So which ones were the hybrids? I am not up on those.
And a little note, my parents had a VW diesel that got 9 mpg less than rated. Just an example that all ratings lie.  ;)
But you have to admit that it sounded good.
Actually the only time I got 65 mpg real was on my 650 cc Kawaski motorcycle.

the prius is a known hybrid. there is also a hybrid of the accord and the detailed info stated on the number one, the insight, states gas/electric drive.

seeing how the 1.4 liter 3 cylinder diesel in the vw gets almost as good mileage as the hybrids one wonders how much it would get if it had a diesel electric drive... but so far the only ones i have heard of working on that are ford engineers.

my parents have the skoda (a daughter of vw) equvalent of a jetta diesel (90 hp) and it gets 60 to 70 mpg highway if you keep it pegged at 58 and are very careful.

they usually average 50 mpg overall, with the majority being non-highway overland driving. with biodiesel. :D

Good thing about the diesel is that there is a lot less expensive things to go wrong. Wonder how much repairs will be on a Hybrid? New technology always increases repair bills, just to save fuel costs.

yeah, i have yet to see some type of price and lifetime info for the hybrids battery packs. as for less expensive things on a diesel, sadly, no. the modern diesel engines are marvels of high technology. that goes as far as the biggest vw diesels having no central fuel pump for injection. they have individual pumps on each cylinder that are powered by the camshaft and magnetically valved integrated into the injector. that way they reach much higher injection pressures than other systems and therefore better misting of the fuel. and if one of those dies it can be pretty damned pricey. but at least if one pump dies the other cylinders still get fuel, so you get some rough running but at least it should still get you home or to the shop...

So it does not hurt as bad at the pump, then. Great.  :D

$6.75 US gallon in UK , my deaux Chevaux 36 cu.in. 602 c.dc. returns about
50mpg , so  for  a 1948 design engine cant be bad, LOL,
safety features= nil,  but as Jerome Clarkson (UK car tester said ) the best safety feature on a car is a 6 inch nail fitteed to the steering wheel boss, LOL !

That was a good one. Lol
That does show that gas mileage has been around a while, they just left some of the simple technology behind!

the best thing i've seen done with a 2cv is a roadster conversion. it stripped most of the sheetmetal off (yes, apparently there was something left to hold it together) and added a fender to each now freestanding front wheel. the engine compartment was encased in a smaller hood that let the two cylinder heads stick out either side, the passenger compartment was turned into a lower flatter version seating only two and the rear end had only one center wheel. thouh it had front wheel drive the single wheel in back was said to give it a rear wheel drive oversteering type feel.

and i have ridden in one. (buddy had one. lots of fun. especially sitting in back alone and making it lean 20 degrees either way by throwing my weight around.

yeah a stripped 2cv engine will produce around 40 bhp without cooling fan and some tweaking, the 3 wheelers weigh around 650lbs, so power to weight is not so bad, and will cruise all day at 70 mph, and return 50 mpg
The little Citroen's are really cyclecars from way back in time,
pic, of a Lomax 3 wheeler, great fun , sensible transport no, LOL
