Hi Rom-Dos , nice link , but I stopped at the "insert the windows CD" nobody I know in the UK has the CD ,  I have tried using a Xp home upgrade disk, but it will not accept  the license key on the original computer, any suggestions ,
I have on my computer XP pro with a ASR backup made every month, so for me it isn't a problem ,
but friends bring their computers round with the problem , and I can't help them ,
apart from  saving their data, any advice would be much appreciated

Download the file and build a CD
Its Bootable and you can customise it to work for your needs

This helps a great deal in repairing PC
