I have a Gateway 831GM <specs> and I was wondering if I can overclock the CPU if I replace the CPU on it now, which is a 3.0Ghz, or would I have to get a new motherboard?

And on another note, I am trying to encode movies and stuff into HD Quality and it seems to take forever to complete.  A 328 MB TV show takes 5hr and 24 minutes to complete.  I am looking at a new pentium d processor but i dont know which speed will be sufficient enough to complete these tasks.  Could someone give me a recommendation on which Processor speed to look for?

well, as for the overclocking issue you will need to get a new motherboard without a doubt becuase pretty much all factory made computer come with a pre-isntalled bios that has little or no overclocking abilities.( i know from experience that factory made computers do not overclock) but personally if I were you i would purchase a new Core 2 Duo processor from Intel.  It is currently the latest and greatest technology out.  You can get the low end model for about $ 180 and even that particular model will overclock real well and put the pentium D's to shame.  And those core 2 duo multitask like a beast :evil6:  Check out these benchmarks the E6300 is the lowest model and it still performs very well.

Thanks for the tip and I will be looking into that.  I have changed my mind about overclocking a pentium D 805 thanks to you :-) .  I think changing the motherboard would be pretty frustrating anyways.

Does the HS/F that comes with the CPU provide enough cooling for it to multitask or will I have to buy a better HS/F?  and would I be able to get someone to install the CPU onto my computer, like Geek Squad, because I'm a little weary about installing new parts due to a lack of space?

But interesting post, nonetheless.  Didn't even know about Core 2 Duo!

Here is a great website that allows you to choose a motherboard and cpu and they will install the cpu/hsf on to the motherboard and they will also load the latest bios at no additional cost .  I think that the hsf that comes with the core 2 duo will be good for moderate overclocking but you will have to go to a more high end hsf or watercooling if u want to overclock a lot.

So I would have to update my Motherboard anyways to get a Core 2 Duo onto my system right?
I currently have an Intel D915GAG Mobo with Intel Chipset i915/i915G

yep, plus u cant oc with ur mobo.  gonna be costly but it will be worth it, personally i was looking at E6600 w/4mb of shared cache vs. the E6300 2mb shared cache but due to some money issue i wont be able to upgrade soon

same with me but I don't think any Motherboard offers 184-pin(i think that's what it is) DDR2 3200 slots.  See I recently bought 2 GB of Corsair XMS memory, so it doesn't look too promising :-(

core 2 duo only supports 240 pin ddr2 ram.  184 pin is ddr.

that sucks.  I guess I'm going to stick with P4 w/HT then.  What processor speed is sufficient for HD Encoding on a P4 w/HT?

actually ur processor is pretty good.  But unless u get to a new motherboard u r pretty much stuck at 3.0GHz.  And with hyperthreading ur processor acts as two processors in a way.  Im stuck with a and athlon xp 1800 @ 1150MHz :mad2:  I would think ur processor would be good at video encoding becuase that is were Intel usually shines as compared to AMD.
Here is a good place to go for instant benchmarks.  You can compare ur processor to others.

This is my motherboard: http://www.intel.com.../ag/ag_proc.htm

I don't think I will be stuck at 3.0Ghz if what it says in the link is correct.  It says the high supported processor is 670 @ 3.8Ghz.

But I will look at the link you gave me.  (I'm sorry for taking so much of your time, but put it this way, you saved me from upgrading my cpu to a pentium d :P)

ya ur mobo supports up to that amount but ur particular processor is set at 3 ghz and with factory overclocked motherboards u cant overclock but if i were u i would purchase a new mobo then overclock.  Not to bash the pentium D tho its just that the core 2 duo performs so much better.  Is ur processor a prescott core?

my friend had that same chip and he actually sold it and bought a pentium D 920 and now he regrets buying it and wants to buy a core 2 duo.  Did u look in the bios for ocing options.  I just assumed since it was a factory made computer that it dint have any ocing options, but urs mite.

Is there a way to tell me what I need to look for to tell if it has overclocking options?  I wanna know what to do before restarting my computer.

more than likey u wont have any options but u should look for FSB and cpu voltage, ddr voltage, multiplier.... all bios are different.  It may have those options but u may not be able to change them

Sorry for taking so long.  My computer didn't want to shutdown and I had to shut it down manually.  I didn't find any overclocking options.  I only found ways to enable/disable certain drives and crap.

yeah thats wat i figured.  A new mobo would allow u to overclock. or you can go all out and buy a new cpu and mobo.  With a good enough hsf you could prob get ur processor to 3.4 ghz or moe but i am not promising anthing.  Overclocking depends on ram, mobo, cooling. psu power.....
