Smarter DL and UL Testing

Recommended Posts

Okay so here is my theory

i don't know how many people do the smart test vs choosing the size of the file, but i don't think the smart test is very smart

why?

well lets see when u click in smart test it downloads a small file

if the file downloads really quickly it download the next file size until it stops when it hits a certain download time for a certain file size

i don't know how it really works but i presume its like this

so if it is a smart test why does it not think a bit smarter for example:

if a user downloads 100Kb under 1 sec what is the point on going to the next one 300Kb file i think it should jump automatically to the 1Mb file

and then if 1Mb file download is under 2 sec, don't go to 3Mb file jump to 5 Mb file

i don't see why a guy with a 10Mb/s connection that download all the files under 5MB has to go though all the little files to get to the big one, it not only wastes time precious to the user but it also eats up bandwidth

do you have any suggestions?

did you understand what i am trying to say ?

It also did little good to clean out the temp files, when to get where you are going, you just have to load down some more.

That is why when someone is having speed issues I suggest not doing the smart test. I get much faster U/L on the 579 kbps than I do on the 97 kbps smart.

Stands to reason. Smart is for beginners only.

Never thought about the bandwidth part.

We should be able to start with a larger file, too. Most cable users can download fast enough so that the "largest" initial test is not large enough. I always have to run through the 2992 kB test first and then end up on the 5983kB one.

That's on the connection at work. I've been told it's a T3 that's shared by 7 of our dealerships in Dallas and Houston, but that's the best speed I've seen here so far.

BTW coknuck, where did you find those links? Pretty cool, but I was referring to just using the link at the top of this page.

I think that's a T1, not a T3...

Also I don't think 7 dealerships in different locations would share one internet connection..

Everything but the one I'm at is in Dallas. And yeah, it's got to be a T1 considering how slow it is, especially during the afternoon. When the internet goes down at the Dallas stores, so does ours. Same with the phones.

I'll actually be re-writing this pretty soon :)

It actually was much smarter before I rewrote it the last time, the benefit now is that there is like 1000 less lines of code to do nearly the same thing.  But with this new model I have some ideas to make it even smarter than it was before and still benefit from less overhead.  As soon as I start playing with the code again I will for sure rework this, look for it in the next version of the tests ;-)
