Yes , many of them do get in the way, at the same time , opening the proper ports and directing them to the gaming machine helps. As well as to keep those wandering from squeezing between ports.
Most hardware FW have popular online games encoded , for those that want click / finished fw. You can also accomplish the same thing in many routers either by default or manually.
