i was just wondering if there's a problem with smart bro. for the past weeks, i have low download and upload speeds. my speeds dropped significantly (50%-60%).

as far as i can remember, my smart problem (no pun) started when i switched from avg (free) to mcafee (thanks to a friend, i was given a licensed copy). my friends told me that mcafee slows down your computer (i am not sure if this is true, but based on my experience, there could be some truth to this), so again, i switched to another anti-virus.

i first tried kaspersky v.7, but i didn't feel comfortable with it. so after 2 days, i installed bitdefender v.11. i am using the trial version (i don't have a serial number, but i do have a keygen. i tried using it but it didn't allow for updates). so after all this uninstalling and installing, my speeds didn't move up. so i concluded that the problem must be with smart.

am i right or wrong?

installing and uninstalling anti-virus softwares might have affected some registry values, which, in turn, slowed down your connection.

i recommend this to you. an anti virus that's lite on memory usage, it's userfriendly and most of all free for home use so you don't have to look for keygens and licenses.

http://www.avast.com...ast_4_home.html

uninstall all your existing anti-virus softwares before you install avast. and establish
first a registry integrity by using ccleaner (crap cleaner) http://www.ccleaner.com/

hope that will help.

i use ccleaner diligently (whenever i use the pc, which is everyday). and i also tried retweaking my speeds (by following the 20 steps to increase speeds). so there.

i remember bitdefender asking me to do a registry clean up (?). oh well. i guess i will have to try avast. i used that before but i had a little problem with its interface. how about nod32 or avg? thanks!

oh my, this is really a slap in the face. i am a bs it - 3 student and i am really such an ignoramus with these stuff. anyway, here are my current speeds and please compare them with the ones in my signature:

http://www.testmy.net/share2-0I2WXMG7R&dual=yes&q2=F0G6Q7W2E

here are some of the specs of my pc, if they would be of any help:

pentium dual core e2160 1.8 ghz
1gb ddr2
250gb seagate hard drive (3 partitions, c for applications and programs, d for multimedia files, e for documents)
sapphire lga mainboard

antivirus? uhm, i just want it to do its job, to prevent virus from sneaking in, especially those tough and common ones (specifically ravmon, krag, img kulot, destrukto, gwen garci scandal, et al). i also want it to have automatic updates, quick scan times. oh well. and i want it to be as simple as possible (i remember avast has a lot of "movement;" it distracts me, haha). thanks!

ah ok i got it. try avast again but this time install only the Standard Shield and Web Shield so it won't have that "a lot of movements" thing.

oh, well. i have switched, again, to avast v.4.7. i also reinstalled comodo (i uninstalled it when i installed mcafee). i followed the 20 steps to improving your smart bro speed, and here are the results:

http://www.testmy.net/share2-2UYZ17GVP&dual=yes&q2=FKVP632JB

hmm, it's not that significant (i just wish i could get a 400 something speed; that would be great), so probably there is still more tweaking to do? but thanks a lot for the help!

kudos! but it would be nicer if you'll get back that speed shown in your sig.

anyways, Cablenut works for some people but not for others. likewise with TCP Opti.

i am attaching a cablenut setting. try it if you want.

@smartbroken_user
yep, i did. i tried the whole process for like 10 times (hoping to improve the speeds ever time i try it). it did improve my speeds for the first couple of times, but the next attempts proved too much.
