I have no need for the index.dat files.  Is there any way to prevent them from recreating themselves on reboot or are they an absolute necessity for Windows XP?  It just doesn't make sense for me....
...am I missing something here?
is there any way to permanently disable them and not affect my computer?

What I would do is adjust the temp internet file as small as allowed, and set to remove on close of IE until I found a way.

I remember something bout it, but I will have to look it up.

EDIT" FOUND IT ~ This will disable index.dat on your machine !

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode by pressing F5 or F8 (depends on your machine)
Login as Administrator
Start -> Run -> type cmd -> click OK (MS-Dos window will display)
on your command prompt type CD -> hit Enter key
then type del index.dat /s (space between .dat and /s)

I did that and these two still re-create themselves...

"C:Documents and Settings$^#@%#Local SettingsHistoryHistory.IE5index.dat"

"C:Documents and Settings$(#@$&#(Local SettingsTemporary Internet FilesContent.IE5index.dat"

FYI...the $(#&%$( is just me covering my stuff.  The "Local Settings" index.dat files still recreate themselves.
...any other ideas?   I am still searching myself...

Maybe try again, because this is deleting the folder itself, were you asked if you are sure you want to delete the folder ?

If that's what it takes to prevent the index.dat from recreating itself, sure.
I tried it again but it still recreates itself when I reboot.

"Dr......Dr. , my arm hurts when I lift it up here like this , see ?

Doctor : Well then, don't reboot   :haha: :haha:  I'm kidding, I'll look for something else when I get back in later, I know there's a way to completely stop index.dat from doing anything.

EDIT, I just thought of something for the time being, I remember I did this with something else, just change the files to "read only" ,this will only keep the file from growing from it's original size which is very very small, and you can't save passwords after this either. You might have to play around a bit before it will allow you to , maybe in dos. There's also more of those index.dat then one, so it may not be recreating.  Make sure you start with a clean index.dat file before you do this.

MS is nasty, they are said to be sending all this info detained within , somewhere for analyzation.
