I will try to make this short , I got a freind  who is diabled ,
back in a rural village , she is gamley fighting on to keep her indepandence ,
she has 56K dial up , well it works out at nearer 32K
and is on the UK BT sevice ,
she uses her computer just for e-mail and a small amount of web surfing ( about once a fortnight ), just to buy cheap flight offers , to visit her sister in the South of France .
I got her fixed up with a computer , and loaded Grisofts AVG ,
alomg with a firewall etc.
well with her use , the AVG updates cost her about 10 USD a month and take about 3 hours on her pay as you go payment plan  and she don't have the option to change that or the money
well she lives 100 miles away from me , so I don't have the option of going down that often , but I could post a cd with the updates monthly ,

so what I am asking is she at any great risk with her surfing /emails , by not running ther latest AV updates ,???

as this is worring her ,
any thoughts or recomendations ?

I use NOD32 and it updates a hell of a lot faster than AVG.

i would say probably not...i mean, its dialup...and she really isnt going to be going onto tons of web pages...and even so she has a firewall...i'd say do it around every 2 weeks to a month ...or around the soonest times you know what i mean...should be fine..thats what i do to one of my buddies computers.   no problems yet either...and im sure he looks at porn as well....  

and yeh as comute_d said...the free version as well of avg. still works fine..

AVG has gotten so bloated. Reminds me of Symantecs Norton.  

I'm running Avast , but I tend to only update this system about every three or four days.... Sorry can't say about the update sizes... But I also am careful about my email and surfing.  Or to put in short.... I pay attention to anything odd.
I also have Java turned off. And a safe bet for light surfers would be to turn off JavaScript. I have a hot button on FireFox to toggle them off and on.

I also use ThunderBird for email. Haven't used Outlook Express in about 3 years. Various extensions available. Warns of email scams as well. Had a friend who was a bit panicked and forwarded an email, supposedly from PayPal,,, To "Dear member". One contact link was safe to PayPal and the 'Secure link' was to the scammers IP web address. Real obvious scam it was.


And I am guessing that her DialUp time is charged at per minute, right?

I would have to agree Roco, like ryan said, it's dial up, chances are if she payed attention to which sites were accessed, then she may not even have to run an antivirus, seriously. I don't do it on mine, and I get 15/7 on average,  If someone does ping her they'll get so frustrated in the slow speed, they would surely leave due to sheer boredom before taking the time to look around in there.

Thanks guys ,,yes she is on Dial up and pays by the minute , works out about $1  per hour ,off peak  ,
she uses the computer online for approx 4 hours in a month ,usualy  1 hour on Sundays,
and most of that time AVG is trying to download it's updates @ 28Kbps ,

at the moment I have got her to turn off the udater ,she does have a firewall running ,
I will be trying Nod 32 av , (Thanks Coknuc) it certainly looks lighter running than AVG  ,
but it's a 200 mile round trip to visit, and I am hoping to have a faster computer ready beforeI go, + a different modem
hers is a 750 Mhz duron  / 500Mb mem. , although I apreciate it won't change her connection speed , It might help to improve my patience
while working on it ,  ,

You know Roco, I know it's a nice visit, and I'm sure with the scenery over there, an even nicer cruise, but for all intent and purpose, you could still use a remote client such as Teamviewer to connect, control , repair , and send her any file you wish. This would serve her when she needs it, and maybe save some unwanted drive time as well, no ? It will work on dialup, maybe not like you wish, none the less, it will work.

She doesn't even have to download the client, unless of course you think ot would be easier, which I would think if your going to do this more then once, znd once you do it, you'll do it more, kinda like sex, well  anyhow (guess I know what I need to do this weekend lol )
