Different people have there own opinions as to which AV works the best. So for you, try them out, the major ones, have a read through some of the threads in the antivirus security section, and in the mean time, I'm certain you'll get many opinions to choose from. Good luck, and welcome to testmy.net

First welcome to the forum! Avast like many other anti-viruses have to check everything coming and going from your machine so they will slow you down some. Like mudmanc4 said you will have to check more of them out to see which one works best for you, :welcome: If your looking for free stuff check this out. http://www.techsupportalert.com/

Might you be running P2P?
Avast has 7 scanning engines and that is one. I've never had a slowdown with Avast, but I do not do P2P.

i've not really had much experience with avast, its good but not for me. if you want to change AV's AVG free is a good one. there are tons of others on the links supplied.

I've had experience with an Avast installation using full CPU on a P4 at about 30 Mbps, which is plain silly. It's apparently doing checks on any packet, possibly stalling your computer. Either turn off that feature, or learn to live with it, or upgrade your computer (it is CPU limited).

I have had no speed issues with avast. But like mentioned  try AVG then. Also free.
