Manually click the update button.  And then it should update. If it doesn't, a teeny tiny file may be corrupted.

Or you might need to reinstall it(uninstall old version first).  To be really simple if something has become corrupted. I know with Symantec(Norton) many years ago, you had to regedit to 'fix' a small line to restore the updater to working again.
Or the other one is the update server is being a pain and causing the error, due to heavy load. Which should clear in a couple of days.

And.  Helps to make sure that no bugs are preventing your updater from working.
MalwareBytes. Anti-Malware

download and update and scan.

And Windows Firewall is only 'one way' protection(incoming).

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0

Heres the link to the AVG uninstall tool, IF needed. Meaning if you uninstall and the new version still gets the error.

It is designed to overwrite the older version. Some products give the choice of doing a clean 'install' or 'upgrade/repair' and usually, it will correct errors that have happened to the older version.

And hopefully you said NO to some crapfest of toolbars and such. They cause their own problems, when they try to integrate into browsers and such.

I kill all my cookies when I close the browser. And my history, etc.

Some Cookies are only good for serving you the newest ad's that you have not seen yet, as you travel from site to site.
I also don't allow third party cookies.
And any time I have used Internet Exploder, I end up with a bunch of crap cookies.

And one or two cookies are for keeping you logged into the forums here or there or anywhere.

Thats the way right there.  what I do is basically the same thing, I clear them out of the index.dat along with all that other  "stuff " that MS stores in there for there use at any time, as they feel like they need to see what , where, and when as far as frequency and duration , last page viewed, habits of porn to report to the places that target you with even more cookies to get into your system, so they can market you with devices such as google .
