i havent been on this site for a long time, lost my internet, got it back now tho...
and now i have a problem, there are preteen kids in the house using the computers and i think they may be getting onto sites they should not be on...
im looking for a free and easy to use program or method of blocking certain websites and or adult content.
so, if any of you knowledgeable people here could point me in the right direction, i would greatly appreciate it.
thanks in advance.

Check your router for it's capabilities in blocking keywords(URL's). A basic start.

Open DNS has a new 'family shield'. I know nothing of it, but you put the filtered Opendns server address's in your router. It's free.
http://www.opendns.com/familyshield
http://www.opendns.com/

Filtered DNS address's.
208.67.222.123
208.67.220.123
You don't need to enter an email address at OpenDNS by the way. You can skip that part.

Non-filtered DNS address's.
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Edit: and enter them into the computers too, just in case they plug direct into the modem. It make take them awhile for them the kids to catch on.  Dang kids is too clever.

If it's an ISP issued "modem/router" combination unit, the ISP may have eliminated the firewall screen via the ISP's own B.S. firmware. Since it would be bad to issue a router without a firewall in it.

But it should at least give you the choice to put different DNS server address's.
I know with the Gigaset modem/router, it would not always honor the 'optional' section of DNS servers. So I got rid of it, also considering it started to act up.

Easiest way would be to google your modem/router and then you get the default IP access number, like 192.168.1.1  , and then what the default user name is and default password ,if they are still the default ones.

Another way for information.
http://portforward.c...rname_password/

Some ISP's have different passwords. With Telus for the Gigaset, the IP is 192.168.1.254 and the stock user name is admin and the password is telus.

Then some ISP's also have back doors in the modem/router for supposed firmware updates. But have been known to reset someones network(on the ISP issued modem/router) to default settings.

Open Dns servers are execellent!Usually more dependant and faster than your own ISP's servers because "that's what they do" and they are dedicated to providing safety and speed along with excellent reliability above all.Alsoif you make a free or paid account you can set your filters exactly how you want them.Down to individual websites.

have you tried talking to them? not trying to judge your parenting. but from what I've learned about kids and teens, and the computer. just as easily as your looking for help to get around them watching adult material. they have access to do just the same at there fingertips.. Ive been in this situation and believe me if there smart enough they will find a way.. Let me tell you a story..

My aunt has a 13yr staying with her and she always kept her computer password protected, and the kid could only get online when she was at home. Well 1 Day she left the computer on and he got ahold of it.. Months later her computer started to act strange so she called me.. Found out he was using the computer via the guest account he activated while he was on the pc.. He had it hidden so you would have to hold CTRL ALT DLT to login to it rather than seeing it on the xp Welmcome screen,,, Little Basterd was clever.. Anywho it had gotten a virus so I did some digging, of course Porn Galore had ben the culprit....

But like i was saying this came from a kid who does less than average in school and he was able to fool us all..
