Welcome to the site toneeels.
First, what is the advertised speed of your service. What operating system are you using and what are the general specs of your system. Also, please let us know what the details of your network are... any routers, switches, hubs...
provide some more details and we'll try our best to help you.

Well since the original poster abandoned this thread and rather than starting a new one I'll just take over this one. So I a have a few questions. My download speed was averaging .5 Mbps with upload being 1.9 Mbps. This was before I found this site and signed up. So after looking over my cable connections I realized that the cable is split twice before it reached the modem which is followed a router. So I removed one split and retested.
Now my connection is inconsistent. At one point my download speed was up to 4.9 then dropped back to about 1.1. I remember when I first moved to my apartment, my connection was downloading at 7-9 Mbps. Now here's the last test I just did.
:::.. its5four's Download Test Results ..:::
Download Connection is:: 1207 Kbps about 1.2 Mbps (tested with 1024 kB)
Download Speed is:: 151 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net/ (Dallas, TX USA)
Validation Link:: http://testmy.net/db/KENDAo
Test Time:: 2011-03-23 22:23:30 GMT -7
1MB Download in 6.78 Seconds - 1GB Download in ~2 Hours - 21X faster than 56K
Tested from a 1024 kB file and took 6.949 seconds to complete
Running at 21% of hosts average (Optonline.net)
User Agent:: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; rv:2.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0 [!]
I have a netgear router WGR614V9 and at the time of the test there were no other computers connected or using the network.
My question is 1) is it normal for this type of inconsistent results, 2) based of this info, do you think there is anything I can do to improve my connection and 3) could it all be my router's fault? It is a little beat up and old. Thanks in advance!
