For years the Center For Disease Control has been at the forefront of tracking the death of landlines and the shift toward wireless -- because the latter group trends younger and understanding who you're calling obviously improves survey methodology. The CDCs latest study found that more than one of every four households (26.6%) does not have a landline telephone but does have at least one wireless telephone. The CDC found that 24.9% of all adults (roughly 57 million adults) live in households with only wireless telephones and 29% of all children (roughly 21 million children) live in households with only wireless telephones. As usual age is a strong factor, the CDC finding that 51.3% of adults aged 25-29 live in wireless-only households

Well it's going to take some time before the infrastructure is up to date in the US , then we can drag up all the copper, and gift it to china,  but that will actually stink on ice if you ask me. Nothing like a dial up connection for more reasons then just backup.
