Hardware vendors and ISPs enjoy repeating the point that it's a relatively small number of users that consume the majority of a network's bandwidth. A new study out of the UK by intelligent network vendor ByteMobile is certainly no exception, noting that roughly 10% of wireless network users consume 90% of a network's available bandwidth. Unsurprisingly, video is responsible for the lion's share of network utilization, accounting for 40% of all bandwidth used by the end of 2010. ByteMobile predicts video will account for 60% of all wireless network bandwidth used by the end of 2011. Of course ByteMobile's reason for pointing this out is in the hopes that carriers will by their congestion-reducing smart network technology.
