China has ordered a ban on advertisements during TV dramas as part of its reform of cultural activities.Adverts will not be allowed in the middle of programmes lasting for 45 minutes from 1 January next year. The authorities said this was in line with the "spirit" of a recent Communist Party meeting.Senior leaders said then that they wanted to develop a "socialist culture", although they did not elaborate on exactly what that means.TV stations are clear about what this latest move means for them though - they say it will result in a loss of revenue. The latest announcement was made by China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) on its website. It said the regulation was being introduced as part of a new attitude towards culture, outlined at the party's Central Committee meeting in October."Radio and television are a mouthpiece of the party and the people - an important propaganda front in cultural thought," read the SARFT statement. An organisation spokesman told Xinhua, the state-run news agency, that the aim was to make TV shows conform to "public interests and aspirations"."In the long-run, the move will help TV dramas develop in a scientific and healthy manner," said the unidentified spokesman.Business impactThe Communist Party has always kept close control over cultural activities such as television programming.

A few months ago it told a successful commercial station to stop broadcasting a popular talent contest called Super Girl.At the recent Central Committee meeting, China's senior leaders appeared to indicate they wanted to keep an even closer eye on broadcasters. This latest move will have an effect on the money made by these companies though."The government could really take our lives if it bans all commercial breaks during the most-watched TV series," one unidentified executive with a mainland TV station is reported to have said.A spokeswoman for Hunan Satellite TV said this new regulation came after most advertising deals for next year had already been signed.Source

Reaction in ChinaThe ban has sparked hundreds of thousands of comments on China's microblogging sites. Many netizens are keen to see the back of adverts, which are seen as increasingly intrusive. Several joke that dramas are being fitted into adverts, rather than the other way around."Have a safe journey, I won't see you out. And I won't see you again," one Shenzhen resident wrote. But others wonder whether the ban can really work. One Shanghai resident said she expected ads to return by stealth, perhaps by being written directly into scripts. And a prominent blogger with one million followers joked that TV executives would get around the ban by airing several five-minute episodes in a row, so that adverts could legally run in between them.

Thinking back quite possibly 20 years, on one of the reporting networks such as Nova, I can recall a theorists vision of future issues and possibilities due to our overwhelming means of controlling ourselves through the control of others. In fact if you've seen the movie " The Truman Show " , we get a comical glimpse of advertising embedded within the program itself. Built into the movie.

It's obvious to the attentive eye this is been a reality for some time. But with this move within China , they very well may see an exodus to the " hollywood of China ". But what will come of the stations that were supported by advertising ? We can speculate the consumer will inevitably be paying for the advertisements , Vs. product manufacturers paying the networks. How ?

Since adverts will no longer be allowed during program , the writer of the program will be paid to insert script into the " show " . Therefor costing more to produce and bring to view. Therefore costing networks more to carry the program. Therefore costing the people more in fee's to cable it to the boob tube. Great scam on the advertisers part. They will no longer be forced to pay networks for expensive time. It's a one time deal with the script writer , which could bring in countless more customers every time the " show " airs.  Could be an interesting discussion.

interesting move by China ,
not having a TV ,I guess it dosn't impact me much ,
but UK BBC dosn't have adverts or product placement ,I can't see how anyone can watch a drama or sporting fixture that is interupted by some muppet trying to sell a breakfast ceral
but then owing a TV in the UK costs
$224 USD a year , (but you get 50% discout if you are registed blind ),

My sentiments exactly. TV in the states is really nothing more then fodder between the commercials.

Very ridiculous that people pay to be bombarded with the most annoying advertisements.

They have gotten terribly intrusive. Flashing as many images in your face as possible in the shortest time frame. Hooking layers of animations and musical notes. Most times you can hear four to six different clicks , bong , beats , slow sappy and speedy drizzle in each commercial.

I have a specific list in the TV room just for products i refuse to shed money for, when there commercials are filled with that noisy flashing jingle overlay , there on the list.

The means used to subliminally bork you into believing you need the product or service is astounding.  My family knows if I'm in the room watching , the mute button will be pressed at a commercial , and every commercial. Hahaha , yea , I know , terrible hey  ? Too fucn bad hahaha

It's hilarious they give discount to TV for the blind  geezus

I don't much care, its not like my TV has costs or anything. Its all free here, all 20+ channels. Which is 20+ more than I need.     A to the delimma do what we do in america, raise the cost of other adverts in accordance so the profit is still the same. Make the consumer in the end pay for it.   :read:
