Web App Help to Formulate an Idea

10 February 2009 - 07:26 PM

Ok I have an idea for a web app I just dont know what language i would need to look at to be able to turn it into a reality. Any help would be appreciated on where to start

Heres the idea:

Built a web based music player that would not grab music off of the internet but instead would scan your "MY Music" Folder and you would be able to control your music from your browser. it could also on the side provide more songs by that artist or era that it finds online. It would also sowly upload your most played tracks and artist to the internet so you can stream at least your favorite online from other computers later.

So basically i want to design a web based music player instead of a local one

why? Several reasons one because playing music off your computer thats locally stored has become very bloated by Do everything players that are resorce hogs

2nd uploading of your most played would mean that your fav music would travel with you

3rd Windows 7 Starter which limits the number of programs you can open to 3.

So im guessing this would probably have to be Java based

BTW I know C+ and Assembly language HTML 4.0 and CSS but am willing to learn whatever is needed to get it
PHP
MySQL
Java
Cold Fusion

One more requirement is that it needs to be cross format cause i often use Linux

I just need to get a lil help on where to start

Also opinions on weather it is worth doing.

Recomanded Linux for a computer noob on old hardware

18 December 2008 - 01:08 PM

Ok so i have these 3 or computers that im really sure i could turn into at least one or 2

these computers are WIndows 2000 era

I would like to put Linux on them and give them away on craigslist or Freecycle to anyone that needs a computer for basic surfing

but im not sure which distro to use for a linux noob and maybe even possibly a comp noob

I want to put linux on them cause lets face it windows 200 cant do shit

and I get less support questions on linux than windows from computer noobs since you are not infected by adware or viruses

even if they click those annoying "Your system was infected by a deadly virus click here to scan now" ads

they wont do shit in linux so yeah its less of  a hassle

linux just works

I normally use Fedora or OpenSUSE with a mixture of Vista ( Designer if adobe ever gets official support in linux bye bue WIndows)

So can anyone help me pick out a distro?

If needed I will post specs on computers later but i'm at school

I want something small that a small kid can get online write a small paper (email it to school so he can printed there)
Listen to music (preferably on songbird since it resembles Itunes a bit and its awesome)

and please dont say Ubuntuu cause i hate Ubuntuu

Any other suggestions are welcome

250 Gb Cap for Comcast Users

29 August 2008 - 08:30 AM

It is official Comcast the 2nd largest Isp in the nation will start setting limits in all of its user starting on October the 1st. I for one am glad that I do not have Comcast but if the 2nd largest ISP is willing to do this it is only a matter of time before other smaller ISP start limiting users and frankly that is something that scares me. While a 250 Gb bandwidth would be more than enough for more users I feel that I would be one of those that just about go over every other month as I am a very high computer users. If any of you out there have comcast i would suggest you look at your router configuration and set restrictions on it to allow unwanted people from accessing your network and leaching of your internet cap.

In one of these websites it shows that in order to reach this limit you would have to to do one of the following:

-- Send 50 million e-mails

-- Download 62,500 songs

-- Download 125 standard-definition movies

-- Upload 25,000 high-resolution digital photos

But that really depends on the quality of the pictures movies and music as well as their length and in real numbers this could be all over the place.

Also another thing that should be noted is that Comcast will not have anyway of users tracking how much bandwidth they are using. Instead once they go over they will be sent a notice for something that they were not even aware they were doing or have anyway of tracking.

I hope ya'll have enjoy my first news post
