Bad power supply?

20 May 2007 - 01:33 PM

My computer has been acting strangely lately.  I use NVIDIA's NTUNE software to overclock (no overclocking options in BIOS).  Every time I turn on my computer, I overclock my CPU from 2,412 MHz to 2,520 MHz (whoooooo), my PCI-E slot from 2,500 to 2,625 MHz, I drop my memory timings down a little bit, and overclock my graphics card from 450/660 to 542/732.  Sometimes, though, when I play games, my computer just randomly shuts off.  It does it way more often on Vista than on XP, and on Vista, I've even had it shut down while I was just browsing the web.  I don't think it's a temperature problem, but maybe I'm wrong.  Could it be a bad power supply?  My power supply is a generic brand.

Boot failure : (

15 March 2007 - 04:26 PM

Whenever I try to boot up on my other hard drive (the one that has Vista installed), I get this error:

"DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"

I inserted the disk and tried to let Vista "repair" itself, but no luck.  Anyone know what could be causing this problem?

Yeah, so basically, my ISP sucks

Yeah, basically, they're terrible.  For those of you who have seen my previous posts about my ISP, you know they're bad, but they're getting a lot worse.

Here is an email I sent them earlier today (be sure to click the links, they have speed test results, I'm supposed to be getting 3/256):

Lately, I've been getting terrible internet speeds, regardless of when I test.  My downloads are slow, pages load like I'm on dial-up (partly because of low speed, partly because of packet loss), and my online games are lagging unbearbly.  Here are a bunch of tests I took these were on my wireless computer with consistent 100% signal strength (It never drops below 100%):

Both testmy.net servers are located in Dallas, TX
testmy.net server 1 test 1
testmy.net server 1 test 2
testmy.net server 2 test 1
testmy.net server 2 test 2

Speakeasy.net Dallas, TX server

DSLreports.com Atlanta, GA server

Just to make sure it wasn't my wireless router causing the problem, I took some tests on my hardwired computer.  Same thing:

testmy.net test 1 wired
testmy.net test 2 wired

Yes, the test results page from the wired test #2 took more than a minute to load because of packet loss (I was monitoring my network with the task manager while I tested).

Why are you providing such low quality Internet access when we're paying for 3 Mbps downstream?  Could you fix this please?

I suspect they'll give me the "up to" 3 Mbps response.  What should I do?

What's better?  That AT&T DSL I was hoping to get is not available at my current address!  Conwaycorp (my current ISP) is my only option.  They pretty much have a monopoly over my city and can do whatever they want with our Internet access.

Possible problem with processor

21 January 2007 - 12:01 PM

Well, I have an AMD Atholon 64 4000+, and it's supposed to have an 1MB L2 cache, but PCmark04 (free version) only shows the 128 KB L1 cache.  Is this a problem with my processor, PCmark, or neither?

New video card

11 December 2006 - 08:09 PM

I'm probably getting this video card for Christmas.  The pictures below show my current setup.

1.  Is this a good choice?

2.  What should I upgrade next (processor, memory, etc.), and what model do you suggest (nothing too expensive)?

3.  Do I need any extra cooling?
