New Storage Server

04 September 2011 - 07:28 PM

As some of you know I run a file/image hosting service and my current storage solution is quickly being out paced by the sites growth. For the amount of files I'm hosting the way I currently store files across many drives and NAS devices is very inefficient. So I have to build something of my own. This will be the first of 2 storage servers I have to build over the next month.

The Hardware:

Case: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16811147156

Processor: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819103888

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16813157199

PSU: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16817371030

OS: UnRAID

Hard Drives: 9x http://www.newegg.co...N82E16822148681 or http://www.newegg.co...N82E16822145493

Ram is just going to be a basic 1GB stick and I will have 2 PIC-E Raid Controllers so I can have all 9 drives. Depending on what kind of bulk deal I can get will decided what drives I end up getting, should find out tomorrow or Tuesday.

In the end if I go with 2 TB drives I will end up with 14.4 TB usable space, using 3 TB drives I get 21.6 TB usable space but at almost double the price. I'm leaning toward 2 TB only because the cost savings can then go towards the second server.

I will have all the parts this week so this should be a fun project overall. Pics of the parts, build, and finished product coming soon.

My New Toy (Netgear Readynas NV+)

18 May 2011 - 12:23 PM

I am quickly running out of storage space on my servers and I needed an effective way of expanding that storage and having some redundancy would also be nice. I looked into just building a basic server and put a bunch of drives in on Raid 5 but thats not really cost effective since I really need a way to expand as I go and you can't really expand a traditional raid with out rebuild it. I looked into a few other things but everything I came across wasn't cost effective or worked with in my power requirements since I'm going to be using it in a colo.

I came across the Netgear Readynas NV+ and its a pretty sweet little product. I paired it with 4 of these 2 TB hard drives http://www.newegg.co...N82E16822148681

I went with 5900 RPM drives because I needed to use as little power as I can since I'm paying for the power and I wanted less heat. Plus it didn't hurt that they performed better then the WD 7200RPM 2TB drives.

I like the Readynas because if a drive fails, I just have to pop in another drive and it rebuilds the data for that drive automatically. It's pretty fast too, I'm getting about 35 MB/s read and 17 MB/s write. The write speed should go up once its in the datacenter because the switch will support Jumbo Frames, my current router doesn't support that feature.

Right now, it has 5.4 TB of protected usable storage space. If this box works out good I will be upgrading to the NVX which has more twice the read/write speed and can support 3TB drives.

My only complaint is that the fan likes to rev up and down randomly even when the box isn't being used, or just by going in the control panel.

Motorcycle Tire Help

22 September 2010 - 06:08 AM

I need a little help trying to figure out what to do.

I was on the interstate yesterday and the plug I had in my rear tire pulled out. I was going up north for business for about a week, I had just enough air in the tire to pull over into a gas station and got a friend to pick me up with his motorcycle trailer and bring me to where I needed to be.

Now to my problem. I can't get a plug to stay in the tire. The hole is about the size of a dime, so I figure I've got to just replace the tire. Its time anyway. Normally I would just buy the tire online and put it on my self, I have my own tire changer. I can't do that where I am at now, I don't have access to my changer, and I kinda need my bike. Where I am at I only know 1 person who knows anything about bikes and he is out of town on the second part of this business trip.

I have tried a few times now to put plugs into it, but they just pull out and I need just about 10 minutes of riding time to get to a motorcycle shop who will put a tire on for me at a good price.

Anyone got any ideas for me?

Got A New 27in Imac

28 May 2010 - 06:32 AM

So I was in the need for some more screen real-estate and I was debating on just getting a seconds 24in monitor for my Mac Pro. The only problem is I would have to buy 2 new monitors at the same time because I would want them to match an it would be about $1000 for both and I really didn't want to have 2 monitors, I really need higher res. on one monitor.

I was looking at this 3.5K display http://accessories.u...04&sku=224-8284 but for that amount of money I can almost get a new computer with that display.

So I ended up just selling my mac pro and I bought a 27in Core i7 iMac.

Specs:

2.8 Ghz Core i7
4 GB Ram (4GB more on order.)
1 TB Hard Drive
ATI 4850 512MB
27in Display 2560 x 1440

I've only been using it for a few hours, but this thing is fucking fast and I can only imagine that it will get faster once I get the extra 4GB of ram I ordered. This thing is all SCREEN. I had to push it back on my desk because it is so damn big lol.... The 2560x1440 resolution makes a huge difference I can see so much more when working in photoshop, I can fit almost 3 full websites across the screen at one time. Photos are absolutely stunning on the IPS display, even better then the $1200 displays I have at work.

I will post some pictures later when I get everything else setup and clean up the mess I made around here.

2009 1000rr Or 2008 Gsxr 1000

26 April 2010 - 10:43 AM

I'm looking to upgrade my bike to something that has a little more power. Right now I have a Kawi. ZZR600, and its great and all but lacks the power at the mid-high end (Not enough Torque). So I'm looking to go to a 1000, specifically a GSXR 1000 or 1000RR. I found both for around $6000 and I need some help deciding on which one to get. I like them both a lot. I don't plan on going 180 MPH on them I just need some get up and go power for when the old ladys start creeping over. (Anyone who rides a bike knows what I'm talking about.  <_<  ) Both have about 180 HP, with about  90 ft/lbs of torque and weigh about 450 LBS wet. They have more then double the torque I have now and 80 more ponies.  :smitten:

I love the look of both of them (The Honda a bit more tho), I hate the exhaust on both but really hate the shorty on the honda, I wish it has a center-up. The Honda has ABS which is a huge +, a electronic steering damper and is very nimble, but is not as straight driving friendly as the Suzuki which is all we pretty much do in florida.

So does anyone here have any experience with any of these bikes, or know anyone who has either and can make a recommendation.
