In Topic: Will the Collection of State Sales Taxes Open the Door to Further Government...

This government, as is the case with all governments, poses an increasing threat to personal freedom and individual liberty with each additional dollar it takes from the public sector. The best way to decrease the size of government, and guarentee your liberties, is to starve it by cutting off or sharply curtailing its revenue sources. Of course, at the same time you'd also need to prevent the government from: (1) borrowing money to fund programs it can't afford to pay for; and (2) simply printing more money.

How about gong back to calling 9/17 "I am an American Day"? Or would that be too politically incorrect?

The blame for this expansion of the power of the federal government can be laid at the feet of the Supreme Court, which has interpreted the interstate commerce clause so broadly that ours is no longer truly a limited government. And if the feds can consitutionally assess you with a tax penalty if you choose not to carry health insurance, why couldn't they also assess you with a tax penalty if you choose not to buy a GM (Government Motors) car? After all, not buying a GM auto probably has more of an impact on interstate commerce than does not buying health insurance.

How about moving more towards a form of pure democracy, away from our representative democracy? Although the American public has its scary moments, I generally have more confidence in them than I do in the politicians in D.C., and it would be harder for lobbyists and special interests to bribe millions of voters than it currently is to bribe Congress.

Yeah, I just picked up on that. Politics as usual. Power corrupts, especially when its concentrated in one small city. That's why I'd like to see a redistribution of political power, from D.C. to the States, from the States to local governments, from local governments to the citizens. I don't know why I have to pay some moron in D.C. to vote on a bill that he hasn't read; I can vote on a bill that I haven't read.
