Ideal use for Overclocking

12 November 2007 - 12:59 PM

So, here's the situation...

I have an EVGA Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT

In the same line is an EVGA Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT SSC

As you can see, physically they are in no way different from each other. Same fan, same size, probably the same photo. The difference being is that the standard GT uses the stock speeds, while the SSC is preoverclocked. Wouldn't it make sense to buy the standard card, then overclock it to where the SSC is at? I mean EVGA did it, why can't I just to save a few bucks?  :cheesy:

The possible limiting factors I can think of, but cannot see are the voltages (Doubt they're different as that's based on the PCI-E slot, right?) It seems totally possible, doesn't it?

Another thing is that I have an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+. Wouldn't it be possible to overclock that to the same speed as the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+?

In overclocking the CPU I definently can see limiting factors, the voltages are the same, but here we have multipliers and a FSB which effects the HT and the memory clock speeds, but of course my memory is corsair with heatsinks so it'll probably handle that pretty well, I can probably manually configure the memory to the EPP standards too!

So, what do you guys think?

Btw, my average temperatures are: Graphics card: 50 C (Full load: 60 C), CPU: 18 C (Full Load: 26 C [That's crazy low, don't you think? Even while Cool'n'Quiet is off too! :)]) and System: 30 C always.

Erratic Speeds Behavior

30 January 2007 - 01:49 PM

So, so far I couldn't find help for this using google seeing as it's a hard issue to describe for the search engine.

Here's basically the problem...

I have a WRT54G v3.1 wireless Router with Thibor's firmware with all its extra nice stuff (note that I've had this problem before I started using thibor's firmware!)

And a WUSB54GS v1.0 wireless network adapter.

The router is across the hall from me, very close and my network adapter is stationed away from the computer and any such equipment.

The router is stashed in a little corner below my Dad's computer in the other room.

All software, firmware, etc is up to date.

Using Verizon FIOS on the 5 mbps speed.

The router is set to long preamble, with channel 8 with a beacon interval of 70 and everything else default. (problem occurs when both of these settings are defaulted as well.)

No other SSID exists on this channel.

And I don't have any firewalls, besides NAT and what the router provides.

Now here's my problem... In the Wireless Network Connection Status panel that you can get by clicking the lil' computer at the bottom of your screen (if you have wireless) or hover over it with your mouse, the speed changes.

The speed changes as in, one moment it can be the full 54 Mbps like it should, the next it will drop down to 5.5 Mbps and so on and so forth.

This gives me erratic network behavior, such as slow speeds intermentent lag, etc.

Here's a screenshot of what it looks like...

As you can see, the signal strength is fine, but the speed is below what it should be, as I'm typing this it just jumped up back to 48 Mbps.

If anyone has a fix for this, whether it's the position of my router vs the position of my adapter (which the router is BELOW the adapter). Please tell me.

A few other things, can anyone please provide me with the 'Microsoft Given' WUSB54GS v1.0 adapter driver that you can only get by having an ethernet in the computer while the network adapter is in as well with the drivers uninstalled for the adapter. Pleasee send me a link for that.

The Microsoft version of the WUSB54GS driver provides more features such as the ability to control the Afterburners on the adapter, which if you use the right setting can give you a 3 Mbps jump in network speeds and faster loading of videos, etc.

Linksys doesn't provide those features with their drivers unfortunately. :

Oh yes, and sorry for the long post... I just wanted to make sure I got everything covered. :)

Thank you!

My Verizon FIOS experience

06 March 2006 - 03:38 PM

Finally I got it!

First thing I notice is was slower than dialup, BUT that was because of Cablenut settings which I fixed with TCP Optimizer from www.speedguide.net.

The settings I used were 20,000 speed, for all adapters, and optimized settings, restart, excellent.

What I got was the 5MB/s down, 2MB/s up plan.

Here are my scores.  :)

It's not that bad at all, especially since I'm on a wireless network!

The tech I spoke with also gave us a NICE speed checker... Yes even better than testmy, that will conserve full bandwith for specifically you giving you the real answer.

It's really good, but you know. Testmy has the forums with all the helpful users and all that goodness. :)

Cool anti-malware EWIDO

06 March 2006 - 03:28 PM

This is great, it's better than what I had before which was Ad-Aware, spybot, and AVG.

It's way faster than the others and it was able to find something I originally thought I had manually gotten rid of!

www.ewido.com

Download it, try it, buy it. It is awesome!   :icon_thumleft: :icon_thumleft:

New Graphics Card shows OS - 2x mode

26 December 2005 - 08:15 PM

Hey, got a new graphics card.

Original - GeforceFX 5200 256MB PCI
New      - Geforce 6600 256MB AGP 8x

My problem is this, so it's 8x right? My OS seems to detect it as 2x, the same as PCI, is this right?
