Quad-core shmod-core Intel, we need 6 cores or more to keep our uh, web browsers snappy. While you're at it, how about tossing in some Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) so that each core can process two threads at a time -- 16 simultaneous threads per 8-core processor or 32 for dual-processor, 8-core rigs. If that sounds good then you're in luck; Intel just went official with its near-term architecture plans which include the 2008 launch of a 6-core Dunnington-class server CPU platform based on Intel's 45-nm Penryn "tick" architecture. On deck is Intel's second generation Nehalem "tock" architecture with SMT and scalable from 2- to 8-cores. We're talking "dramatic" performance and energy improvements, according to Intel, from a microarchitecture bent on delivering an 8 MB level-3 cache, DDR3-800 memory support, 25.6GB per second Quickpath interconnects (so long Front Side Bus!), an integrated memory controller and optional integrated graphics to high-end servers and eventually laptops. Hear that AMD? Tick, tock goes the clock.

This will be such a nice addition. It means that when these do come out you will be able get a 12 core mac pro

Cool, that ought to bring down the price of building a quad core a lot. Best news I've heard in a long time.

Heck I'd be happy with a Core 2 Duo!

Well imagine having 3 core 2 duo's on one chip. with a really fast Bus Speed
And if you really want to blow that pay check you could have 12 cores.

Yea it will be a nice day when then port every game over to OS X. And it shouldn't be too far off now with apple getting more market share every day.

Not that many applications can utilize a quad core, and even fewer still have 8 threads to feed to this monster with
Dual-Quad Cores
. Sure the processors does arithmetic with 8x3.2GHz... 25.6GHz! (and it was overclocked to 8x4GHz!) BUT, most programs are still running 1-2 threads. And yes, these 8 cores under load used double the wattage of a quad core.

Are you certian cpu is the hold up and not RAM or hard disk?

most every day programs are because they don't need 8 cores let alone 12. more cores is generally not for 1 programs. Its so you can have many things going at once with no system slow down. The only programs that I use that would use 12 cores would be photoshop, 3ds max, and finalcut. its going to be a long time before the average user has apps that will use more then 2 cores.
And yes I'm sure its the processor and not the hard drives or ram. When you see all 8 cores in a mac pro maxed at 100% usage with almost no hard drive and ram usage you know its the processors. When the files are saved they are around 4GB but ive opened some that are 25GB+ when opened in photoshop. the processors just don't have enough bandwidth and cache.
