A strange problem has cropped up on my home PC recently. I am unable to view streaming Windows Media Video either in a web page or in WMP 11 itself. I was geeking earlier and wanted to watch the Shuttle dock on NASA TV and was unable to. The player gives me the error in the attachment below and this link gives the error code: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/webhelp/default.aspx?&mpver=11.0.5721.5268&id=C00D1197&contextid=90&originalid=C00D001A I have tried other streams and get the same error. I did finally find the Quicktime links on NASA's web site and I am able to view the stream that way. Ideas?

Question for the techies. I was testing a 50/5 connection the other day and could only pull about 30mbps with my WinXP laptop. One of our data people said that XP won't be able to pull down the higher speeds without messing with the TCP/IP settings. But he was unable to elaborate at the time. Does anyone here know any more about this? I also was told Windows 7 does not have this issue.

Suggestion - Move Active Topics To Front Page?
dn0 replied to dn0's topic in Ideas to make testmy.net better?
I see that, but that is just newly created topics. If they remain active, they still fall off that list. I have just saved a shortcut to here: http://www.testmy.net/ipb/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=active . But I think it would be nice to see the most active on the front page especially for newbies (and lazy old people like me). -
CA3LE - I kind of miss having the active topics on the home page. I know i can go to "Portal" and then "Today's Active Topics", but I find myself doing that a lot. Is it possible to create a new window on the home page that mirrors the active topics' first few lines? Or am I missing a shortcut somewhere? Thanks.

Once upon a time I lived below Mt Hood, Oregon, and had to cross two rivers fed by the mountain snow and glaciers to go anywhere. Even a little eruption probably would have killed me and my neighbors. Now I live in Nebraska and even we have been having small earthquakes around here lately. Maybe the 2012 thing does hold a little water.

Have you force killed the laptop and re-started? (hold power button down for a few seconds until it shuts down) I have had a couple laptops do this when coming out of standby and always had to kill it and restart.

Happy B-Day Mr Walker and happy to hear you are feeling better - from what I can see your modem has been running well for the last couple days. 3.6 billion UN-errored packets; 77 corrected (meaning the packets were corrected via the error correction process) and zero UNcorrectable packets. Don't ask me how I know this; it is a secret Ninja thing- but please RE if you want more info.

I believe most standard routers generally only handle 1 VPN pass through at a time.(Like my WRT54G and I have a D-Link that also only passes 1 VPN) But sounds like your Cisco will work.

I actually really only use IE to access my work email anymore (built in interface to MS Outlook), otherwise FF is much more friendly to me, speeds are good with it also.

Thanks Coknuck - it was the 'Show Updates' that I did not have checked. After I checked that I was able to un-install IE 8; which forced it back to IE 7 like you thought and now everything is working just as well as it was before. I appreciate the assistance.
-
There we go, I unchecked IE under Add/Remove Windows Components. ( I did not see IE8 under Add/Remove Programs, directly) Now the shortcuts are gone, so I downloaded IE7 from MSoft. Now, it is telling me setup cannot proceed because a newer (and CRAPPIER!) version is already installed. Any idea how I can blow out version 8 all together? (Frickin' Bill Gates - did anyone see that South Park? If so you know what I'm talking about).

It was a Windows Update pop up a couple weeks ago. I know - I usually say no, but I was bored.

What would be the easiest way to roll back to IE 7 without a system restore? The reason I don't want to restore is I recently cleaned out a Trojan, and don't want it to return. IE 8 has several issues (for me anyways); one of the biggest is logging into my Outlook Web Access (work email) via IE. It was a pretty good interface via IE 7, but now it's just a pain. For example, I have to re-log in every time I open an email, or any Outlook window at that. I see nothing special about IE8 and would rather roll back... Thanks-

Good - glad it helped. Actually, I believe it is a hardware fix in most cases. It is something emanating from the TV in the IR spectrum. I think it is Samsung that is already sending out replacement parts for the TV owner to take to a qualified service center for swapping. I will try to get more info specifically about Phillips for you from the co-workers that are directly involved in this.

Actually I'm a cable guy - do you want to be my friend? You can play the part of Mathew Broderick and I will be Jim Carrey's character.

Here we go: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1123862 Read this thread - it is also a 42" Phillips and the writer has a temp fix. This is exactly the problem that was in the work memo... There is more in the full thread via the link above.

There are several models of LCD TV's that emit a signal that interferes with the infra red signals to Motorola Cable boxes. This is probably the same issue. I will try to find the memo - it was sent out at work and the memo noted that all of the manufacturers are aware and working to resolve the issues.

Impressive. I would have thought the latency would be a bit too high for a decent voip call with any wireless data carrier. My Sprint EVDO service generally has a ping time to anything on the web around 130-170ms. sparky, post a "tracert testmy.net" and also a "ping testmy.net" back here. I am curious if your wireless latency is better than what I normally get.
-
First, do you have the Sprint Smartview software? It will give you the exact receive power level (snapshot attached): mine is running -82dBm (in my basement). And granpa is right, you should try a better antenna before amplifying the RF. You could very well just amplify your problems along with the signal. An amp does not correct signal distortions, in fact by the laws of physics, amplifiers introduce distortions. Also, the 60dB amp will be in dBmV - radio signal level is given in dBm. 60 dBmv = approximately 13dBm @ 50ohm. (this would be the best you would gain with the amplifier).
-
Not too bad this morning. Sparky, have you looked into a wireless/cell carrier like Sprint / AT&T, etc? I believe TMN member granpa switched to Sprint EVDO as soon as they upgraded his area. I use Sprint EVDO for work and it is for the most part reliable, although I am mobile most of the time and definitely find dead spots. Just a thought. edit: here's a couple examples http://coverage.sprintpcs.com/IMPACT.jsp?PCode=vanity:coverage http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/ http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/CoverageLocatorController?requesttype=NEWREQUEST&coveragetype=broadband
