  1. I guess when you think about it like that it makes more sense that Japan is able to have much better internet speeds. By the looks of that picture if the U.S. was as small as Japan Verizon would be done wiring the entire country and everyone could get FIOS!

The other really big problem is regulation.  In most of the country Verizon is having to go to each and every municipality in order to be able to provide tv service to their fiber customers.  That's what Verizon really wants, the triple play. They won't make their money back just on internet service.  They have to be able to provide TV, Telephone,  and Internet.  We're lucky in Texas because our legislature passed a law a couple years ago that allows new TV Cable/ Fiber providers to solicit this at the state level instead of having to go to each and every little town/city/municipality.

  2. Yeah fios is amazing, I've been up and running on it now for over 2 years i guess.  I have never had a slow down in speed either up or down.  I did experience a couple of  outages. Once when my cable got kinked when my neighbor got his install.  They had to re-run a new cable and the second time is when my ONT went bad.

  3. Damn I wish someone would compete with fios in my area.  I was in one of the first areas to get fios in Texas and my speed is 15/2 and hasn't changed.  Can't really complain though, 15/2 is way more then I need, so I guess I should just be happy to have fios at all.  :smitten:

  4. fios is gonna jump start cable networks where they are supposed to be but will fizzle.  they cant compete with docsis 3.0, that is when its ready.  160/120 possibility.  cable isps are just not spending money because, well, they dont have to upgrade their equipment.  it is definitely a monopoly, a greed issue.  why give someone a 60mbps connection for 100 dollars when i can give em 30 for 100.  no competition.  fios brings this competition and ofcourse forces the cable isps to protect their customer base.  pretty soon everything will be streaming and on demand.  and their current tiers are insufficient to support this, in the internet race america is definitely last.  charging businesses 3000 dollars a month for full backbones.  how does a small business survive in this enviorment.  they dont, they settle for crappy tiers which cant possibly meet the demands of their clients.  that being said, excuse the rant.

Are you saying that Fios can't compete?  Perhaps I'm missunderstanding.

  5. Fios kicks ass!  I love mine.  I've had the 15/2 package for about 1 1/2 years now.  The thing that really amazes me is that the speed NEVER fluctuates!!  I get my full speed  (up & down) all the time, day and night.  I also love the fios TV service.  I've got HD and two HD DVR's for less money then I was paying for Comcast's crappy service.

I wish that Comcast would up their speeds in my area so that Verizon would have to go to 20/5 at my price level.  This is what's happening in other areas of the country.

  6. I don't exactly know how it works on FIOS, but I have cable and you have to reset the modem if you are changing the device that is connected directly to your service. The modem can tell when your mac address changes, and requires a new IP for each MAC. Is there a way to "reset: your connection, possibly? You may just have to "activate" the router's mac address.

It's doesn't work that way with fios.  There is no modem in the chain.  There is an ONT (optical network terminal) that goes on the side of your house and an RJ45 nework cable runs from that box to your router with nothing in between.

  7. Okay, nevermind.....I figured it out.  I had to make a change in IE.  Even though I'm not using IE :?:  I use Firefox but for some reason IE was wanting to make a dialup connection and wanted to use my VPN for this.  I changed this in the IE settings and that seems to have fixed the problem.

  8. I had to create a VPN connection for a company that I do business with.  I created using the connection wizard in XP.  The VPN works fine except for one thing.  The connection window keeps popping up wanting to connect.  Anyone know how I stop this?  I'm using Firefox if that matters.

  9. Okay this is a little off the wall.  I just got a new cell phone and it just happens to have a USB connection.  It's got the little mini USB connector on the phone and I just happen to have one of those cables from another device.  So I downloaded the software (driver) for my laptop and I set the phone up as a USB modem.  I'm able to get my dial up software to recognize the phone and it calls AND connects to the Internet.  But that's as far as I can get. I can't web-surf and my email doesn't work.  I am connecting to the Internet because oddly enough my VPN software for my company will connect but nothing else seems to work.  I'm sure it's probably something simple............any suggestions?

  10. somewhere in my route to Stockholm, where my ISP route almost all traffic, they are capping me

    this is what they deliver

but this FTP transfer from University in my town, show me im not capped locally

belive me ive complained hehe, but i gave up, all BS about the service is "up to 100Mbps" ok i can buy that, but when i cant reach 100 Mbps any time its just wrong... they should advertise it as "up to 70Mbps" instead...

    VanBuren :)

Hey Van, could you give me the link to that TP Test?  I know you gave it out once before but I had to reformat my HD a while back and lost it.

    Thanks

  11. So I'm playing COD2 and start noticing some weird artifacts on the screen.  I shut down the came and try playing BF2 and get the same thing.  I was funny because the games played fine for about the first 5 minutes.  This led me to believe that I was having some kind of graphics card problem.  My first instinct was that it might be an overheating problem but I installed the latest drivers first.  However, the problem persisted.  I cracked open the case and sure enough my fan on the video card is dead.

I'm going to use this as an opportunity to upgrade.  What do you guys use / recommend?  I was thinking Geforce 7600GT.  I can get into this for under $200 which is about the top of my budget for a new card.  So....what say you?

  13. I'm hopping that the UL will be the next big battle ground.  If Comcast was smart :haha: they would be pushing the UL instead of trying to compete on the DL side.  I would not switch my 15/2 fios package to a 30/2 package even if it was just a few dollars more.  However, I would pay allot more for a 15/15 package.
