I always get much better scores from tesmy.net. I am in very close proximity to the testmy.net server but I'm guessing that I must be pretty close to the Dallas speakeasy test server as well.

Correct me if I'm wrong....and I may be, but isn't the DI-624 a wireless B router? With the encryption turned on I'd say the best your going to get wirelessly on that router would be about 6Mbps. I know it's supposed to be 11Mbps but on my previous B router I was never able to get more then about 6Mbps on the wireless. On my new DI-524 (Wireless G) I usually get above 12Mbps on the wireless.

TCP/Web100 Network Diagnostic Tool v5.3.3a
click START to begin
Another client is currently being served, your test will begin within 45 seconds
Checking for Middleboxes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Done
running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 1.82Mb/s
running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 14.74Mb/s
The slowest link in the end-to-end path is a 10 Mbps Ethernet subnet
click START to re-test
so im guessing my connection isn't very slow at all? =]
I'd say that looks about right. You could probably improve that upload score with some cablenut adjustments but the download looks pretty good.

Okay, try the following test server it should be closer to your location (fewer hops).
http://web100.rit.edu:7123/ Rochester, NY
Let us know what your results are.

lilwill, where are you located? I'm curious as to your proximity to the testmy.net server which is near downtown Dallas. Here is my download from that server which is just a few miles from my house in Flower Mound, TX.
Testmy.net:

However, when I test from a server that is much farther away I get a significant drop in speed. This server , for example, is in Virginia. Due to some slow downs along the way I loose about 5Mbps in download speed.
TCP/Web100 Network Diagnostic Tool v5.2.0f
click START to begin
Checking for Middleboxes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Done
running 10s outbound test (client to server) . . . . . 2.10Mb/s
running 10s inbound test (server to client) . . . . . . 10.83Mb/s
The slowest link in the end-to-end path is a 10 Mbps Ethernet subnet
You need to have a server that is in close proximity to your location in order to have a benchmark. I have three local servers that I use as my benchmark. As long as I'm getting my full speed from those servers then I'm happy. Since Verizon can't control what goes on outside their system I don't raise a stink unless my benchmark servers are showing significant dropoff.
Let me know where you are and I'll point you to some servers that are close by.

I Wnat Something Other Than Direcway So Bad
Doubtful......Verizon is putting all their resources into fios right now.

What is your advertised speed? Oh, and welcome to the forum!

I believe that people should have to pay for what they use." This is off topic but I am going to ask something I usually get a negative response to.Do you then feel that parents should pay for 100% of their childrens education & that this should be no burden on the tax payers?Meaning they would pay per year per child what it costs to educate their own children.Which I beleive in Texas is approximately $8000. per year per child for public school.
Well, that's a good question and it doesn't have a simple answer. So here is the best I can give you. The cost of NOT educating our children is far higher then the cost to educate them. I do believe that people should pay for their children's education and if you own a home in the state and you have children in the public schools then you do pay quite a bit. My annual school tax for example, is over $3000 per year. I'm not sure I agree with your $8000 figure to educate a child since I can send my daughter to a private school for less then that. I'd say it's closer to 3K to 5K in which case I AM paying for my daughters education. However, if I had no children then I'd still happily pay my annual school tax since every child deserves a good education.
I could certainly afford to pay the price of my childs education and would be happy to do so if my school tax was dropped. However, there are a great many who could NOT afford to pay that price and would simply not be able to send their children to school. Statistics clearly show that uneducated people more often then not ultimately become a burdon to society. So eventually you're going to pay the price for not educating those kids and I can assure you that it will probably be a much greater price. You can pay me now or you can pay me later.
Thanks My Friend

FiosFiend :Well I guess we will have to disagree on the reason for the high gas & oil price.I suggest you track down where the money from the taxes goes.In Texas It goes for education more than roads like the car tag money does.
Maybe you can explain capitalism to me start out with the reason as an individual it is illegal for me to charge more than 10% per annum on money I loan .These are called usury laws.If an individual charges over 10% he loses not only the interest but the principal. So if we live in a totally capitalistic society why can't I make all the money I can on a loan.
Then explain why insider trading is illegal this in theory would be just allowing an individual or business to make as much profit as possible.
Next why are monopolies illegal like what they tried to charge Bill Gates with ?
How about price gouging laws Like the gas is as far as I'm concerned selling for more than it should due to the hurricane disaster.
Are those enough examples of the limited capitalism in the USA or would you like more?I believe these are enough to prove the USA is not purely capitalistic.
Okay. I'll take your points one at a time.
1. 72% of the 20 cent Texas state tax on gasoline goes to the State Highway Fund - I would say that constitutes MOST of the money. 24% goes to schools and the rest (4%) is used for administration. If you don't believe me then check here. http://www.dot.state.tx.us/moneymatters/moneymatters.htm?pg=motorfuel It has a very nice graphical breakdown of the spending.
2. Capitalism - An economic system in which the means of production and distribution are privately or corporately owned and development is proportionate to the accumulation and reinvestment of profits gained in a free market. The USA my friend is a close to a purely capitalistic society as your going to find anywhere in the world. But we do have laws to regulate how business is conducted so as to maintain a fair and free market system. Charging more then 10% on money loaned is called LOAN SHARKING and it's illegal for a good reason.
3. Insider trading - This is illegal because it gives an unfair advantage to a select few. That said, I tend to agree that insider trading is not that big of a deal. I don't really see that there is a victim in insider trading. It's just they way our trading system is set up. However, I don't see how that changes the overall scope of capitalism in the USA.
4. Monopolies - These are illegal because they do tend to victimize individuals. In a true free market system Everyone needs to have a fair shot at success. When you allow monopolies to exist they can easily shut out competition by controlling the market place. Bill Gates and Microsoft beat that rap, by the way.
5. Gas Price - Actually the price of gas is too LOW. We have a great interstate state highway system that was basically given to us by the US Government and we get to use it for free. That's actually the definition of socialism. When the state gives you stuff for free and you don't pay your fair share. The fact is our current 18 cent per gallon federal tax on gas in no way covers the cost of maintaining that highway system. I believe that people should have to pay for what they use. Having said that I would also point out that it is our interstate highway system that has made this country so great in the first place. However, I'd still love to see lower gas prices.
And btw, I never said the USA was a PURE capitalistic society, I said it was a capitalist society and it is. The pureest your going to find in the world.
-
Well, as you've said yourself, a one day boycott isn't going to do anything. Yes of course oil company profits are booming, but NOT because they are gouging us on gas prices. It's because the demand for oil and gas is higher then it's ever been. Certainly they have a right to make a profit on their business. Last time I checked this is a capitalist society. The fact is, the price of gas is not going to go down until OPEC lowers the price of crude..........or, until the state and federal authorities lower the tax. And, in fact, most of the tax on gas does not go to education. It goes to roads.
-
Well, this is just a patently naive idea. First of all oil and gas companies are not the problem. Nearly 75% of the price of gas comes from 2 things, 1. The price of crude oil (43%) - that's controlled by OPEC not EXXON. 2. State and Federal Taxes (31%). If you want to lower the price of gas the way to do it, is to lobby your state representatives to lower the taxes on gas. Not buying gas for one day will have absolutely no effect on the major oil companies. These companies have Massive (note the capital M) cash reserves. Push your state and federal representatives to loosen the gas taxes.
Oh, and you all in socialist countries are really screwed. In England, for example, nearly 80% of the price of gas comes from taxes!!

Sorry about double posting here but I faild to look at the upload in my original post. Figured, if I was going to post up I might as well take a look at the download again. As it turns out there was not that big a difference the second time around.

the only accurate way to test is to set up two computerswith the same hardware with seperate connections and run them at the same time
Oh please. I think I can fairly accurately figure out what my connection speed is by simply running a test server that I know to be close to my location (least amount of hops) and that has proven to be accurate among many users. That just happens to be Testmy.net

That depends. What is your advertised speed and what are you paying for it? Generally speaking, 4 to 5 Mbps is pretty good, although, 6, 7, and 8 Mbps is getting to be the norm in major metro areas. Then there are the areas like mine where fios (fiber optic system) is becoming available.

No wonder my pings are so good. I'm only about 20 miles from downtown Dallas.
-
Thanks for the post. I have also seen a significant string of bad results fom various NDT sites. I think a lot depends on proximity to the node your testing against. I know my connection and it's proximity to the testmy.net servers is almost next door (about 14 miles). I get single digit latency across all hops to the testmy.net site. For me, testmy.net IS the benchmark site.
Where is the testmy.net server??

DOCSIS 2.0 can achieve speeds far greater than that right now, but many regions that cable networks service are still operating at DOCSIS (1.0 - 1.1). Certain areas are 2.0 certified, but only a handful compared to the large numbers that aren't.
Adelphia @ (16000/2000) & Cox @ (15000/2000) have already proven that cable can hold it's own very well on a DOCSIS 2.0 infrastructure.
Comcast is planning to skip a full DOCSIS 2.0 upgrade and move directly to DOCSIS 3.0. They claim to be striving to give their customers 200Mbps down.
I can assure you that whatever speed the cable companies are able to squeeze out of that copper wire will be easily topped by Verizon over fiber. Long after the cable companies have eek-ed the last drop of speed out of copper using whatever method they choose, fiber will still be lightyears (pardon the pun) ahead.
-
When I cut the cable and went to Fios they told me that their engineers were working on an upgrade to compete with Verizon. I think it's going to be a while before they get these kinds of speeds though.

I'm not a litigious person, but I think I would have moved forward with the malicious prosecution case. I mean, who hasn't been screwed at one time or another by a cable company. She would have surely gotten a sympathetic jury.

This bill sets a huge precedent in the telecom industry. The cable companies hate this! This is really going to spur massive competition in both bandwidth and pricing. HaloBox, you are correct............TEXAS DOES RULE!
