  1. don't wanna start an argument either, but saying that light travels faster then electricity is not right - from what I know they DO travel at same speeds (but it all depends on conditions) ;-), but that is not to be confused with electrons (which are slower) .... when it comes to talking about sending an electrical energy through a coaxial cable - it is going to be slower than the speed of light (in a vacuum!!!) ....if anybody is interested in finding the propagation velocity ill elaborate on that ! :)

Actually your right.  Electricity does travel at the speed of light, however, not through a coax cable.  The copper cable has resistance and thus slows the transfer of electricity, as I understand it.  Light through a fiber optic cable travels as fast as light can travel in our atmosphere which, as you point out, is slower then it would travel in a vacuum.  So, I should have qualified my response.

  2. I live in oklahoma city oklahoma and here Cox offers 15mbs down and 2 mbs up. I am think of getting it maybe. That what I was talking about isn't that about the same speed as fios. And after seeing you guys posts I see it is. So I may get it. But for now I am on Sbc dsl.

What does Cox charge for their 15/2 package?

  3. Cable connections, once the infrastructure is in place, can do everything that fiber can and better.

How exactly do you figure that copper cables can be "everything that fiber can and better."?  There is a finite amount of bandwidth that you can get out of copper cable regardless of the infrastructure or technology not to mention it's  susceptibility to electromagnetic interference.  Fiber has unlimited bandwidth and no problems with electronic interference.  Cable has very real limits with regard to maintenance, necessity of repeaters, susceptibility of electronic interference, etc, etc.  Fiber as I understand it has far fewer limitations in all of these areas.  So how then can cable be "everything that fiber can and better."?  On top of this cable will NEVER be able to match the ping times of fiber...........light travels faster then electricity.

I'm not trying to start an argument, I just don't understand how you can justify that statement.

  4. Thanks php...now my brain is almost in his place...

  6. Lucky you!! I Can hardly wait until FIOS runs in my area cause you pay the same as me and you get more than twice of my 6MB package speed....  Damn im jealous' lol'

Yeah it's pretty nice.  I had no problem calling Comcast and breaking the bad news to them!  I was paying $53 a month for 4/850 with them.  This was a nobrainer.  Hope you get it soon!

  8. Cox is tring to compete with them (in markets where FIOS is) but anyone with knowledge knows that even if Cox has the same speed as FIOS... FIOS is still the king.

Hurry up and get to Phoenix FIOS!!!!  I need you!!!  :evil6:

Well let's face it.........nothing travels faster then [glow=red,2,300]light! [/glow]      Thank you Mr. Einstein ;)

  11. good morning all:

wow, thanks to all for the suggestions and by the way, my fios pkg is:  15/2 Mbps so i apologize for the error, tell you what, I think I read 75% of all the posts in this forum  . and something kept jumping out at me : (MCAFEE!!!!!!)

I've heard the same about [glow=red,2,300]MCAFEE[/glow].  I use [shadow=red,left]PCCillian[/shadow] and have had ZERO problems with speed.  One of my computers (work laptop) uses Norton and I can't get the same Up/Down stats with it as I do with my main personal computer.  I'm sure that it's probably the Norton causing the difference.

  12. I saw the trucks, and I saw the ads for FIOS in Tampa, however the site is saying no! I guess as usual to call is better then to look at the site... I'll give them a call, and s1. you should check as well seeing as you live near my area.  :haha:

In my case it was about 2 months from the time I saw activity in my neighborhood to the time I got hooked up on the service.  I also got a note on my door the week before they started digging to let me know that they would be trashing my lawn but would fix it after they were finished.  I was one of the lucky few to get a main terminal right in front of my house. ;)

  13. Yo dude...what is verizon fios

i pay $40 bucks a month for a 3.0/768 verizon business line...can i call verizon and upgrade my line to a fios line?...

Fios stands for Fiber Optic System.  You can't upgrade to it unless they have laid fiber optic cable in your area.  If they had, you would probably know it.  There would have been allot of Verizon trucks doing allot of digging in your area.  You should call them and find out if they are moving into your area any time soon.

  14. Not sure when they'll be in your area, perhaps "TM" can help you out with that (if he reads this) since I think he's with Verizon.

As far as speeds go they offered three packages in my area, they are as follows.

    1. 5MB Down / 2MB Up - $39.95 without phone service $34.95 With phone service

    2. 15MB Down / 2MB Up - $49.95 without phone service $44.95 with phone service

    3. 30MB Down / 5MB Up - $199.95 without phone service $179.95 with phone service

I went with the 2nd option with a qualifying phone package which was actually cheaper then the phone package that I already had through Verizon!  I was on Comast and getting about 4MB down / 780K up and I was paying about $49.95 + $2 a month for the modem!  On Fios there is NO modem and thus no charge for extra equipment.

Of course the installation was free and the first month of service is free as well!  I'm keeping my Comcast service for another week just in case.  However, I can tell already that cutting the Comcast line will be no problem.

    Hope this helps you.

  15. I agree that you should be getting better upload speeds.  Here are my Fios numbers.

  16. My experience was pretty good.  They started laying fiber in my neighborhood some time in April.  They started sending out the packages for service the first week of June.  I signed up and got installed on June 22nd.  So I'd say it was 2 months from the first trucks in my neighborhood until I was on Fios.  Here are my posted speeds as of today.
