    4,57 - 1,74 - 2,60 - 1,57 - 2,08 Mb (not very good, except the first test...)

    In nearly all the test say "xx % faster than the average for host (189.159)". What does it mean? How can I download faster than my host? If I get always the same message (faster than my host) but the results are very poor (as shown above), would it mean that I can't do anything else?

    I am going to paste some results of direct downloads with my favourite program: Flashget. I have tested downloading four large files simultaneously. I show you peaks at my maximum speed (my router indicates now 8,6 Mbps). Even one large file (more than 255 Mb) has downloaded at a reasonable speed (495,95 kB/s). The others files you see in the screens downloaded (average) at 144 kB/s, 123 kB/s and 181 kB/s (normal speed?). Well, that's the begining, but what I mean is that I have no problem in direct downloads. I am not very sad with it.

  2. hmm i didnt know ADSL2+ did not use the extra 8 bytes. you shouldnt have a problem getting your router to use 1500 for a mtu, i think they all let you set that manualy.

    dlewis23, I upgraded to the latest router firmware and ... surprise!!: 1492 was the maximum MTU allowes. So I have just downgraded to the latest firmware that allows 1500.

  3. I need to know that to figure several of the Cablenut settings.If you can't get your router to use the 1500 then the calculations need to be made with 1492.

    Well, Cholla, I have ugraded my router firmware again (really downgraded). I restored to a previos firmware, but newer than the last one. Anyway, we have available MTU with a maximum of 1500.

    There is one other CableNut setting (which are really registry settings) that may cause problems with ADSL2+.

    EnablePMTUDiscovery        1 is on  & 0 is off

    Try it off.

    I think the new thinking is

    DefaultTOSValue set to 0 like you now have it .

    You might also try increasing this DefaultTTL to 128.

    This is a link to a .pdf users guide for your modem if you need it.

    http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/wireless/3CRWDR100/DUA100A-72AAA02.pdf

    I have just disabled EnablePMTUDiscovery (set to 0) in Cablenut.

    I set DefaultTOSValue to 0 because I read something about it and thought that it was the best. But we can change it to 128 when you tell me.

    Thank you for the link to my router's user guide, but I downloaded it yesterday.

    I attach you new screens of cablenut and TCP Analyzer.

    Before continuing I have one question about router configuration. In "Internet Settings", in "Connect type" I have chosen "Always connected", but I know that there are people who have set it to "Auto - Triggered by traffic". Do you know something about it? Or doesn't it affect very much?

    Before doing any speed test, why don't you tell me which tests do you want me to do? I will do always the same tests to compare the results. Notice that I am in Spain in case you want to tell me some special test.

    Mrproper  :o

  4. Well, I have been investigating. My router is named "3Com OfficeConnect ADSL 11g Firewall Router", but there are basically 3 models:

    3CRWDR100A-72 (model sold in Spain)

    3CRWDR100U-72 (model sold in Usa/Canada).

    3CRWDR100Y-72 (model given by ya.com - my ISP - when you do a contract with them) --> so, I have this one.

    You can see the different firmwares in "http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/result.jsp?selected=6&sort=effdt&sku=3CRWDR100A-72&order=desc".

    This model had an old firmware, so I upgraded to version 2.06 (3CRWDR100A-72_10Oct2005.exe), that is to say, I think I upgraded firmware to a new version but as if my model of router was one sold in Spain (I didn't phone to my ISP to upgrade). I think there isn'ty any difference between model A and Y, except for ya.com has bought all the routers in another country (I don't know... but routers are made by many countries and many times it's cheaper to buy in a foreign country). Anyway, I think you can upgrade freely to any model (they will not be very different, I suppose).

    This afternoon I phoned to my ISP and they gave the new upgrade (there must be a little different than USA version).

    Well, I don't know much more. That is what I have achieved.

  5. mrproper;I have been reading some on the ADSL & for it the MTU should be 1500.So You should change that in your router.While there unless you know you need it disable "Universal Plug & Play"

    If you are between 1 & 2  kilometers then ADSL should work fine.

    Did you restore your original settings with the TCP Optimizer as I suggested?

    I also noticed That your CableNut was a lot different.Did you already "delete the CableNut tweaks" in it?

    Bad news... New firmware router doesn' allow a MTU > 1492, that is to say this is the maximum now. I am going to search in www.3com some documentation about it in case we prefer previous version. Previous version was ready for ADSL2+. I don't know about the new one but my ISP assured me that it was supprted too...

    I need "Universal Plug&Play" because I use Azureus as client bittorrent.

    I am not able to restore original values for the registry in cablenut and TCPOptimer because I have made a lot of changes. Before consulting you and dlewis23, and afterwards Vanburen, I had already made a lot of changes. Moreover they had installed me the new connection (PPPoA) a few (one or two) days ago. What I mean is that the original configuration was made on my own...

    We can start working with the current values or with a .css file you think that suits me. But first of all we have to know which firmware is better: the new or the old one.

  6. Well, cholla, I have phoned my ISP and they have told me:

    * Advertised speed: up to 20 Mb

    * Guaranteed speed: 50% of router speed

    That is to say, they only guarantee 9000 Mb (my router speed) / 2 = 4,5 Mb. They have just installed me the new ADSL2+ and the router speed will be growing, but this is what we have now.

    * Distance to central: they didn't know !! I have searched in internet, and I have calculated between 1,5 and 1,8 kilometers.

    On the other hand, they have given me a new firmware for my router (the latest, june 2006). I have upgraded the router and they have given my all the parameters. Everything is more or less the same, but they haven't changed the router MTU (now it is 1492), but I think we'll have to change it.

    Anyway, I am going to attach some files with the original configurations and some screens with the router configuration, with which we are going to work.

    Than you, friend. I hope not to dirturb you very much

    MrProper  ;)

  7. Uys, cholla, I think I wasn't doing well the things. I attach you new files (Cablenut and TCPOptimizer) obtanied through the web page http://www.j79zlr.com/cablenutXP2k.php (download=9000 kbps, upload=512 kbps, latency=220).

    I haven't made any change in the attached screens.

    "For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.

    Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:

    513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)

    256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)

    128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)

    64240 (MSS x 44)"

    Where do I change RWIN in Cablenut? I suppose in "DefaultReceiveWindow" field because in dslreports.com suggests me to change RWIN, that is Receive Window (RWIN)=921600 and it's exactly the value of "DefaultReceiveWindow" in Cablenut.

  8. calculating latency is very hard, it wont be very accurate. So the best way is to test diffrent values..

    this is a old guide how to calculate http://www.luwigie.com/tweaks/FAQxp2000.pdf

    VanBuren :)

    I have already read the content of the link and I have a problem. You say I must download two large files (you give some good links) and aftewards I must do a ping (or a tracert to my ISP).

    If I do a "tracert www.ya.com" (ya.com is my ISP) even without downloading any file, I get all the packets lost in node number 6 (see attached file). It doesn't happen with another pages (dslnuts.com, testmy.net, etc.)

    What is happening? Is it my fault or is it the fault of my ISP? Perhaps it is something at this time, and it can work in 30 minutes?

    Against which server can I do the test instead of ya.com? Must I do it with a spanish server or with a foreign one? or must I do it against ya.com?

    MrProper

  9. Well, cholla, I have decidedto change the rwin value. Tell me if it's correct ot should I choose another one. As you can see in the image I attach, I wonder how is posssible that so different values can work well. 513920 is the highest value and 54240 is the lowest. If as reading in many web pages this value is so important, how can TPP-IP analizer suggest values so different?

    Vanburen, I am going to read you link about latency and I tell you something in the next post.

    MrProper :-P

  10. Cholla, for these values (Down=9000, latency=220), I attach you the results in CableNut and TCPOptimizer.

    Have a look at them and suggest me any change.

    I paste you the result of speed tests (made twice each):

  11. If you looked at the pins I did & put in screen shots of when me & dlewis23 were discossing ping in this topic

    You will notice I did: ping testmy.net -f -l 1472 If you ping with this it will give you the maximum latency to the site you choose to ping.Just substitute anoter site for testmy if you want to.Do this to 10 different sites & take the average of all of them.

    then use that average in the cablenut calculator.

    I have made a tracert against google.es ten times and have obtained an average latency of 178 ms (while downloading the large file linked in http://www.j79zlr.com/cablenutXP2k.php).

    I have made a tracert against testmy.net ten times and have obtained an average latency of 263 ms. (while downloading the same file).

    1) Is it correct doing it while downloading a file or not? I don't understand how affects it to latency (I suppose it gives you a worse value of latency).

    2) Latency = (178+263)/2=220,5 ms, is it ok?

  12. mrproper;Since VanBuren was helping I turned it over to him.He's very good.I'm not sure what settings you need to make in Cablenut .I looked at the screen shot of yours & it didn't have most of the values filled in.Make sure VanBuren takes a look at this.I think this way it may have even removed some registry setting from your OS.

    I'm sure this one should not be blank" DefaultReceiveWindow"

    I will see if I can Find a couple of things.for you to look at.

    The text files I posted before explain a lot of the Cablenut settings.These are from Microsoft not Cablenut .But they explain what the settings do.To some degree anyway.

    This is a link to screen shots of some testmy members Cablenut settings including VanBurens.They might not be for your connection but should show you what the Cablenut settings display should look like Full of settings.If you can't see the settings click on the blue at the bottom of the picture & open it to your image veiwer where you can magnify it.

    http://www.testmy.net/forum/index.php?topic=3274.msg30972#msg30972

    Also these are screen shots from the cablenut analyzer page.I got the information from your posts & used those.The latency I got from your ping.

    These are for the 3 DSL types that were available.They are probably simular but maybe one will work for you.

    Thanks cholla for your help, but I think that although Vanburen was helping me, you could have continued helping me too. I went to him because he is the author of Cablenut, and I suppose that he is the best to known his own software, but I have never denied your help. (Forgive my english. It's not very good, but I think you know what I mean).  :D

    I attach again my current Cablenut screen. And you are right: there are a lot blanks, but it's the .css file that Cablenut gave me, except two parameters that he told me to change. I don't know if it's normal or not but Vanburen gave it to me. I suppose it's ok.

    The screenshots you show me (calculated in http://www.j79zlr.com/cablenutXP2k.php) is what you or dlewis23 told me in the original post, isn't it? But my problem was how to calculate the "latency". TCPOptimizer program has a tool to calculate it and doesn't use any file to download. The explained way in j79zlr.com involves to calculate the latency running a tracert while downloading a large file.

    So my questions are:

    1) Which is the correct way to calculate it? TCPOptimizer or j79zlr.com?

    The first one gives me a latency between 490 and 500:

    Pinging [204.127.135.135] with 32 bytes ->bytes=32 time=172ms TTL=46

    Pinging [204.127.135.135] with 32 bytes ->bytes=32 time=211ms TTL=46

    Pinging [218.32.192.112] with 32 bytes ->bytes=32 time=502ms TTL=45

    Ping statistics for above hosts:

      Packets: Sent = 21, Received = 21, Lost = 0 (0% loss)

    Approximate round trip times (RTT) in milli-seconds:

      Minimum = 89ms, Maximum = [glow=red,2,300] 502ms[/glow], Average =  246ms

    The second one gives me a latency of 303 ms (the page says between 150 and 300):

    10  236 ms  266 ms  224 ms  The-Planet.ge-4-3-0.ar1.DAL2.gblx.net [64.210.104.58]

    11  237 ms  257 ms  240 ms  vl32.dsr02.dllstx3.theplanet.com [70.85.127.62]

    12  244 ms  253 ms  253 ms  vl41.dsr01.dllstx4.theplanet.com [70.85.127.83]

    13  242 ms  275 ms  255 ms  gi1-0-1.car17.dllstx4.theplanet.com [67.18.116.69]

    Traza completa.

    As you can see it's not the same (approximately 500 vs 300).

    2) When I do a tracert, against which server or page? Is it the same? I live in Spain. Should I choose a spanish server to tracert and/or a file to download from a spanish server? The example above is made against testmy.net and the file is from ftp://ftp.newaol.com/aol6.0/179902/setupaol60.exe.

    Thank you very very much!!

    :)

  13. like he said there isnt much more that can be done, you may just simply not be able to get faster then what you are at now. you could be on the outer edge of DSL's distance. If your anywere over 10,000 feet with ADSL2 your not going to go very fast maby 5Mbps max.

    dlewis23, if I reached 5 Mbps ** regularly **...... I would be very happy, but you can see the results of my speed tests, all made at different hours and different servers.

    I think that "something" could be done, couldn't it?

    Kindest regards and thank you too and all the people who is helping me !!

  14. I don't think there is something else to do, your MTU is correct, the settings is fine, you could try increasing RWIN, but it might backfire when congestion starts ticking in... As larger RWIN you have, the more speed will suffer when a packet is lost.

    With DSL, speed depends on how far away from CO you are, and the quality on the phonelines. That means you ISP cap modem at a certain rate eg 10 Mbps, but distance and quality on phoneline might only hold 8 Mbps max. Thats part of the reason ISP

  15. speed could be better, congestion seems to be a problem, so you could try lower the RWIN a bit.

    try this, open cablenut

    change TcpWindowSize and GlobalMaxTcpWindowsize to 128480

    click save to registry and reboot

    now test speed again against Swizz and testmy.net

    also test speed against my mirror

  16. open TCP Optimizer, and click Custom, change MTU to 1500

    scroll in the list of adapters (see the arrow) so all adapters is set to 1500

    click apply and reboot your PC

    make a new speed test both against Swizz NDT test and testmy.net, also a test here https://www.speedguide.net:8080/

    Well, that's all you asked me, Vanburen.

  17. Vanburen, I forced MTU ** in the router** to 1496 because TCPOptimizer told me that it was the optimum value. Now I have changed again the value ** in the router ** and set to 1500, and rebooted PC. But where else do you want me to change the value?

  18. the MTU is off, since your on PPPoA the MTU should be 1500

    read the manual for your router/modem and see if you can set MTU manually to 1500

    you show packetloss here

    1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  192.168.1.1

      2     *       43 ms     *     framed-user-32.62.151.30.ya.com [62.151.30.32]

    thats between your modem/router and CO. If you use a phone extension wire, try replace it or bypass it and connect modem/router direct to your house main phone socket.

    I had MTU set to 1500 vefore, but I changed because of TCPOptimizer suggestion. I have set it again to 1500. And I repeat the tests now. I don't have extensionss or something like that.

  20. Hello Vanburen:

    You helped me very much a long time ago, but now I have changed my connection type (same ISP) and I need help. I opened a post (http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-15534) to find out a RWIN value that suits me. They are helping me very much (dlewis23, cholla and FallowEarth. They are fantastic members) but at the end I have been given two .ccs files made with the program "j79zlr".

    Before applying any .ccs file of your own program, I prefer to follow all the steps you posted in http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-2097, so perhaps you can help me with my suitable .ccs file.

    I hope that they (cholla, dlewis23 and FallowEarth) don't get angry with me.

    ** 1) OS: Windows XP Proffesional (SP2 installed).

    Doownloaded and installed the p2p fix for SP2 (german version because the english one didn't work).

    ** 2) ISP: ya.com (Spain)

    I live in Spain and my connection is:

    ADSL2+ (PPPoA protocol, not PPPoE)

    Advertised speeds:

    Down: "until" 20 Mb, Up: 1 Mb

    Real speeds (according my distance to the central, etc):

    Down: 9000 kbps (seen in my router, in ADSL Status)

    Up: 509 kbps (seen in my router, in ADSL Status)

    ** 3) I have installed "TCPOptimizer" and gives me an optimum MTU=1496. Now I have these values in "speedguide.net" test:

    TCP options string = 020405b00103030301010402

    MTU = 1496

    MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

    MSS = 1456

    Maximum useful data in each packet = 1456, which equals MSS.

    Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 522720

    RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 3 bits (scale factor of 6)

    Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 65340

    For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.

    Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:

    512512 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)

    256256 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)

    128128 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)

    64064 (MSS x 44)

    bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

    Your TCP Window limits you to: 20908.8 kbps (2613.6 KBytes/s) @ 200ms

    Your TCP Window limits you to: 8363.52 kbps (1045.44 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

    MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

    Time to live left = 55 hops

    TTL value is ok.

    Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

    Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

    IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 11110000 (240)

    Precedence (priority) = 111 (Network Control)

    Delay = 1 (low delay)

    Throughput = 0 (normal throughput)

    Reliability = 0 (normal reliability)

    Cost = 0 (normal cost)

    Check bit = 0 (correct, 8th checking bit must be zero)

    DiffServ (RFC 2474) = No valid DiffServ equivalent. See the TCP Optimizer documentation, or RFCs 2474, 2475, 2597, 2598, 2873.

    I have changed RWING to 512512 as suggested but I don't get better results, but if you want I can change it again.

    ** 4) These are the results of my speed tests, but I live in Spain so I don't know if they are suitable (any suggested speedtest?)

  21. mrproper change your MTU to 1492, and use TCPoptimizer and set it to 20000Kbps, restart and do this test http://www.testmy.net/tools/test/d_load.php?&st=st&tt=1&ta=1&top=000&out_src=20MB

    Do I set the speed in TCPOptimizer to 20000 kbps? My current speed in the router (adsl status) is 9000 kbps. And TCPOptimizer is telling me that optimum MTU is 1496.

    I do whatever you sayl me, because you are trying to help me. But I want to understand the things I do.

    Thank you

  22. You probably just need to clear your cache between tests.This may produce more consistent results on the test.

    Next you need to change your RWIN to 512512 if you want it that large this way when it scales the unscaled RWIN will be 64064 whiich is the largest you can get with the MSS you use.If you want to try a smaller RWIN then you need to use 256256 so the unscaled RWIN will remain as large as possible.

    I need to check this & it will change the RWIN from what I suggested .The point is you want it to have the unscaled RWIN as large as possible but under 65535 & based on the MSS.I think with DSL your MTU needs to be 1492 which means your MSS would be 1452 .This would make the RWIN  63888 unscaled & 511104 for the setting.

    For this setting in Cablenut you need to read the TOS .text file I'm putting in below.

    DefaultTOSValue

    I'm also putting in a .txt file that has the MS explanation of what a lot of the CN settings do.

    Sorry, but my english is a little limited. Moreover I don't understand very much about connections, etc.

    So, I have understood this:

    1. I do the speed test. If I want to repeat I have to clear my cache.

    2. Change RWIN to 512512, so my Unscaled TCP Receive Window will be equal to 64064 (the largest I can get with my current MSS).

    3. You think that my ADSL needs a MTU of 1492. My connection is ADSL2+, based on pppoA protocol, so maximum MTU es 1500. TCPoptimizer tells me a maximum (and optimum) MTU of 1496. I think that maximum MTU in pppoE is 1492 (in pppoA is 1500).

    4. I don't undersand what 's better: MTU=1492 or 1496?

    5. I don't understand anything about the files you have attached. What do you mean?

    Than you very much for you interest
