  1. Thank you for the reply!  It is "up to 5mbps".  My fastest tests are usually 4.8 at several sites, e.g. @ Speedtest.net I've been up to as high as 4827.  Some other sites will just show 4.81.  This is through a Linksys Router (I'm hard wired to it) and running AVG Ant-Spyware, Spy Sweeper, Windows Defender, NOD32 and Comodo Firewall.

  2. I did one of the NDT tests this morning and decided to look at some of the details.  I noticed these two references:

Your PC/Workstation has a 125.0 KByte buffer which limits the throughput to 4.56 Mbps

The network based flow control limits the throughput to 4.61 Mbps

I'm thinking the second one means my ISP cap but can I adjust the first?  Thank You and Happy New Year!

  3. I now have Ashampoo, so I attempt to delete this Sonic folder after unintsalling (tried to uninstall) Sonic Record but I couldn't.  I kept getting warnings about how it could make programs not work or whatever (you know what  I mean), which I ignored, hoping System Restore would save me if I needed it, but Unlocker couldn't even delete the folder on boot.    I used RegSeeker to find Sonic entries and it found 89 and that really freaked me out. I was going to backup the registry anyway, especially since I wasn't able to delete the folder but when I saw all the entries I just backed out and left them.  Problem is, all the dlls you see that start with ms are MS files. I've enclosed an example of those dlls that I'm concerned about.  Could I delete all but those files or should I just not worry about it since sonic isn't really hurting anything and I have a ton of disk space anyway? The reason I ran the unistall was because I opened it to see what it looked like compared to Ashampoo and it started nagging me about upgrading, which ticked me off. I had forgot that it always did do that.

  4. In view of an impending Christmas gift from one of my children, a Maxtor OneTouch III External HD, I just did their flash tutorial. From what I can ascertain, I would not need any backup software programs like Acronis or Norton feature, just the software the OneTouch comes with. Is this correct? Also, it appears as though, besides backing up files, I can create system restore points, the thing I would most value. Comments please! Thank You!

  5. My daughter, who is working part time on her MBA at Boston U, uninstalled Office7 Beta today for some incompatibility issue she was having while working on a project. She had been using 7 Beta for several months and really liked it. She was using her companies lap top (XP Pro) and it also uninstalled MS Office. Apparently, the Beta must have installed over Office. Now she has no Word, Excel, etc. She tried doing an XP restore but it gave her the message (I paraphrase), there is nothing wrong with your computer, try an earlier restore point! Have any suggestions? My main question is: since she doesn't have the XP Disc, since it's a company computer and tech support is in Atlanta and she is in Boston, if she contacts MS and they see she has a valid copy of XP, would they give her a link to download Office? Thank You!

  6. So as a compromise to shutting down or not, on days my wife works, I shut down before I leave for work, or if she is going to be home, I'll leave it off all night and turn it back on in the morning.  The main reason I do shut down is so it isn't sucking in dust all day/night.  So if that is my only concern, should I just use Stand by or Hibernate instead of turning it off?  Thank You!

  7. About two weeks ago we had quite a bit of flooding in Western PA.  During the hight of it my signal to noise ratio went from a consistent 39/40 to 36/37 which I realize is still decent.  Prior to this flooding, my downstream/upstream averaged about +7/45 to 48.  Now I'm always +3 or +4 and upstream 38 to 41.  The post flood readings (based on upstream levels, i.e. the modem doesn't have to work as hard), from what I've come to understand about all of this, are actually better.  So two questions:  They are always working on our system here in town and may have done some more improvements, are these new readings just a coincidence?  Is the lower signal to noise ratio a result of the lower downstream signal or still an issue from the flooding?  Thank You!

  8. So, for no particular reason, other than I hadn't scanned with it for a couple of weeks, during breakfast this morning I run the complete scan.  As is always the case with my apps, I was perfectly clean!  Well ever since I had some issues recently with RAM usage, I've been monitoring my process memory usage.  On average, with AVG Ant-Spyware 7.5, Comodo Firewall, NOD32, PopTray,  Spy Sweeper, WeatherPulse and Windows Defender all monitoring or enabled, my RAM usage averages around 50% of 1G RAM.  I noticed after that scan that it dropped to around 30%.  It stayed there until I shutdown (about 1hr).  So when I got home from work today, I anxiously booted and usage was pretty much normal again.  So about 5:00PM I scanned again and it is after 9:00PM now and usage is still around 30%.  My wife was copying numerous recipes and I installed Media 11 and upgraded ie Spell (trust me I'm a Ff guy!) so it's not like my pc has been just idling away here!  So what is AVG doing?

  9. this is just another one of those threads to get people to go to another test site...and like the other one this one sucks too...hahahaha

says my dl is 233 Kbps...yeh okay...

Whaaaaat?  Your joking right!  All I wanted to know, was it my pc or the site!  It's fun to test lots of places, what's with the competition thing?

  10. This past week I deleted some leftover OpenOffice.org files which apparently were also shared with files associated with internet access (Windows warned me but sometimes I'm a 58 yr. old idiot). I could not restore the corrupted shell because I had XP Restore set to only use 1% (on an 80G HD - idiot again!). Unlocker was already programed to delete on reboot on the one restore point I had, so it would only restore with the missing files (at least I think that is what was happening). I ended up saving files like addresses, bookmarks, etc. but lost all my programs and had to reinstall XP. I'm reasonably sure programs like Norton Go Back would have saved me much like XP Restore would have but I was wondering, can you store your entire operating system, files and programs on an external hard drive and then just reload the whole thing without losing a thing?

  11. Go to this site and in the right hand column choose "Speed Test", the second one down on the right.  Then take the test in the lower left.  It only tests upload for me now, whereas both used to work.  I've tried it with both Firefox and IE and I don't believe it's my firewall.  Please see if it works for you and if it does any theories why it isn't working for me?  My Java Run Time works by the way, so I don't think it's that!  Thank You!
