Dammit, a technician then phoned me up in the evening telling me that at a distance of around 3550 metres from the local exchange it would be "difficult" to get even 4 megs. It seems I should be able to apply for a cost reduction in the subscription because I technically cannot get 8megs. (which... is fair, and good. ) Today, that's saturday, my bandwidth has slipped to a very sad-looking 1.6 or so on average. eeek. It seems like my line's destined to max out at this speed- they said plugging my router/modem straight into the wall socket would be ideal, but there will not be a great improvement in speed. The best I could do should be around 260KB/s on low-traffic days. I won't complain much now. Line tests have been done and they say there's not much wrong with the phone line. As regards to packet loss, is TCP optimiser (from speedguide.net) an accurate guide? (you know, the latency section) IF so then I don't seem to lose too may packets. So that's the situation now.

I'll seriously think about the reconfigurations then. prior to low bandwidth, was the problem of constant disconnections. Now that's been fixed. Can you possibly give me a brief, really approximate approximation as to how much the bandwidth will differ if I plugged it into the wall phone socket instead of using an extension? Strange question I know. You can just see the laziness contained within me that tells me "Don't move the router!!" Still, I really appreciate your help Van Buren, Thanks. *EDIT* OMG!! Should I use the DSL settings then? I thought they wouldn't work that well with my setup because my connection's ADSL. does it matter? I did give them a try, and the last time I did that, there wasn't much improvement. I'll try again though. see what comes up I phoned up Bulldog today, and they advised me to correct my DNS servers (that I did, and not much improvement again) and use their speed testing utility, then send the results to the engineers. I turned out to be ... some 3.55km away from my nearest local exchange. that's a little far by anyone's standards. Nonetheless they said even if I can't attain 8Meg, I should get around 4Mbps. Btw- for those who do use phone lines, would phone line extensions from a wall socket affect the speeds that much? My Router is in my room- and incidentally there's no phone wall socket. The extension is actually plugged into a wall socket in another room (seperated by a wall and toilet lol). I know a little bit about line noise - I mean, I really should plug the phone line straight in the wall socket to reduce noise. However... DOES it really matter that much? It is quite a hassle. Honestly. We have to re-configure all the ethernet cables again, to connect to that router in the other room- one of them cables reaches from the 2nd floor to the ground floor (down a big shaft in the house we found by drilling into the wall. Adventurous, no?) Well anyway- just a bit of information for you to digest. I'd prefer it if I dont' have to move it of course, hehe.

Heh- Solwise support isn't the greatest thing on earth- I posted on their forums asking for help, but now that I returned from shopping to see if there's any responses, THE FORUM'S DOWN!!! I guess i'll have to wait a while longer to see what they come up with eh. Edit: I found that my upload speed has gone a bit. Does that mean upload speed has decreased so that download speeds can be faster? do'h!

Hiya!! The router's config i've yet to solve- it's still running at a MTU setting 40 lower than what it actually says in the config screen. I'll try and find out what on earth is happening. For now i'm sticking with this 1540 MTU setting simply because it seems like it's giving me 1500 As for the TCP receive window- Van Buren you are a hero lol Instant increase of around 300Kbps. MY router's MTU hasn't changed- under my current connection's "ip interface" part... it says MTU 1540 name: ppp-0

I now use Sygate instead of ZA but I have not Power cycled my router/modem. My PC is has healthy as it ever can be, I use Firefox as browser, AVG Antivirus... Spybot Adaware SpywareBlaster etc.etc. Because this is the United Kingdom, we use ADSL- so I would imagine some DSL settings will be inappropriate. Please help me figure out my best possible settings with use with cablenut!! Oh- Bulldog as hinted that if we live too far from the local exchange, the phonelines will not be able to support 8megs. That's fair enough, but I really do hope I can get to at least 4Mbps inc. upload. Everything's a little sluggish. The weirdest thing is, my computers are set to MTU 1500, the router to the MTU of 1500, but when I go to speedguide.net it tells me i'm running 1460!!! MSS would be 1420!! AND!! when I put the router's MTU up to 1540 (not technically possible, but I did it!) then speedguide finally told me "yes you are running 1500". MSS being 1460. Weird eh. As far as I know turning on computers doesn't automatically limit each computer's bandwidth. I've tried with 3 computers on and 2 computers on, but the results are pretty much the same. Obviously, when I test, the other computers do not use the internet. Thanks ever so much in advance.
