Firefox 2.0 alpha 3 available today, including Google security features

The next version of Firefox will come out of the virtual box with Google's anti-phishing tools built in. While the Googlified security services have been available through use of the Google Toolbar for either Firefox or IE6 for quite some time already, this marks the first default installation. And we all know how much Google values the defaults.
The phishing-prevention tool works by comparing every URL the browser encounters to a blacklist. The user can add and remove entries to/from the list, or simply point it to the official, actively maintained Google list of evildoers. In the Firefox incarnation, the feature will be named "Safe Browsing," and it's one of the highest-profile new features in the upcoming 2.0 release of Firefox.
Phishing has become a common method of identity theft, and any move toward more secure browsing by default should be welcomed by your average Joe and Jane Sixpack. To be sure, Microsoft has caught on to this growing need, and seems to be tired of always providing the punchline for unsafe browsing jokes. Would the software giant have been as vigilant about end-user security without significant competition? I wouldn't have bet on it. Market pressure and competition leads to many great things, and more secure browsers seem to be among them.
The Google connection should come as no surprise. Not only does Google pimp the IE-alternative browser through its referral program and the Google Pack, but the company also has several lead Firefox developers on its payroll. The browser seems to serve as a handy thorn to twist in Microsoft's side, and supporting that program is one way to deny Redmond a few MSN-by-default users.

tdawnaz ~ if I'm not mistakin' ~ you were the first to post 'private parts' with your 'Dragon' thingy pic (that I warned against, I must add) ~ and I'm sure that's when everyone went "Oh NO!" and freaked out!! (at least I did (again!) . . .thus probably, causing this need for a 'vote' process to transipulate. ~ lol j/k

Don't get me wrong ~ "I Love TMN" and wouldn't want to jeopardize that relationship in any way, nor the site. Sometimes there are things even CA3LE has said and done that have completely surprised and freak me out. . . so I guess this may be just one more of those ~ that 'we all' need to deal with (and agree with).
What I'm saying is;
~ this has become such a yes and no question (for some, including me)
~ I think what we 'really' need to do now ~ is define some agreed upon 'boundaries' (wsuggestions)
~ for the "Members Only Lounge" only.
What I would like to propose (for the "Members Only Lounge" only) is; if you 'feel the need' to post a T & A pic, do so by providing a hyper-link with a warning in red, like [WARNING: ADULT CONTENT andor NUDITY]
Then the person (the "more seasoned" member) has a 'choice' ~ to click that 'link' or not. . .this seems fair to me, as long as it's only here in the 'Members Only' section.
Also, I think this section should be opened up to members only after 100 post or more, ~ to me ~ that would be more of a 'seasoned' member ~ meaning, a more informal trust has already been developed ~ beyond the "Help" and "Check this out" 'newbie' postings we all started with ~ when we first found this site.
[i know, this might be completly un-doable, now, so it's just a thought, maybe]
Also, I think the "Members Only Lounge" should be seen by all members, including the general public (Guests), on the Main Forum ~ Board names list!! ~ but not accessable (meaning still restricted) 'till that member (or Guest has become a member) and after the 'seasoned' requirement has been achieved. Meaning ~ The WHOLE POINT of why I thought a 'Members Only Lounge' would be a neat idea ~ was to entice our 'Guests' into becoming members!! ~ Marketing 101.

Shug ~ did you assume that the medication was a tablet. This was an IV drug for Hemopheliacs. That means it was injected. Meaning sold as little vials which were air tight (so HIV can survive, it's not 'outside' and exposed to air) and it gets injected into your bloodstream (meaning it doesn't get owned by your stomach's hydrochloric acid).

. . .for all the people having trouble remembering far back to the early 80's or weren't born yet.. These are the Hemopheliacs that proved Aids wasn't just a 'Gay' Virus.. they dropped by the thousands all over the world due to this.. their weaker bodies made them some of the very first clusters of casualties.
One study I read said these Hemopheliacs were one of the largest reasons the virus spread so quickly, between their spouses, straight and gay sex partners, . . . and more importantly the fact these people arewere Hemopheliacs with a Deadly blood stream that would be in contact with health professionals, family members, or whomever. And in the End, directly sped up the infection rate among the entire world..
More importantly. . .these poor souls were the VERY first cases of the virus in many countries and regions of the world. In a sense creating Thousands of "Patient Zero's"
Maybe one day the people, who always blame Homosexuals for the Aids virus, will realize the virus would never have taken such a quick hold on the Gay, followed by Straight population (including little children!!) if not for the Drug companies never ending disregard for medical and humane ethics.
This is pure malignant evil. Greed is destroying this planet. We need people to stop buying products from companies such as Bayer and Nestle, Shell and so forth. We need a large media outlet that can highlight these issues, kick up hell, and give people back their fundamental rights as humans. People within these organizations are making decisions that will knowingly destroy and end lives. This is murder. You can fudge the issue and call it corporate neglect, and other fancy monikers, but at the end of the day, murder is what it is. All for money. Money that is never used to contribute to society, but just as a figure in an account.
When corporations have greater power than all the governments then this place (OUR World) is in big trouble. It seems people (including OUR elected officials) are either unwilling, or are afraid to ask the important questions, . . . to organise from the grassroots, to actively boycott. When Britney Spears pregnancy gets greater media attention than wretched stuff like this, then the vested interests have won, and the majority have succumbed to the brainwashing that is forced upon them.

Interview: Eye openers for computer users

WASHINGTON, DC, United States (UPI) -- An Apple a day may not keep the doctor away -- at least when we`re talking about computers. A recent survey showed 75 percent of American jobs rely on PCs, which means we`re spending more and more time staring at screens. As a result, up to 90 percent of computer users experience computer-related vision problems. Dr. Jeffrey Anshel, a San Diego-area optometrist and editor of the Visual Ergonomics Handbook, talked to United Press International about his vision for healthier eyes in the workplace.
Q. How did you get involved with this issue?
A. I got into computer-vision issues because my office was near a computer manufacturer. Patients started coming in with bizarre vision problems. We`ve named it `computer vision syndrome,` or CVS, which refers to eye symptoms that occur during or after people use computers. The symptoms are eyestrain, headaches, blurred vision and dry eyes.
People are using computers longer, and one of the problems I`ve noticed on the ergonomic side is everyone has a computer monitor in their face. From a visual standpoint, it`s way too high. Take a piece of paper and look at it. You`ll find you hold it down, since our eyes prefer to look down to read.
Q. Is CVS a new phenomenon?
A. The American Optometric Association named it just over 10 years ago. It`s not a life or death issue, but it`s a functional, comfort and productivity issue. Here`s the thing -- with eye problems in general, vision problems are slow to develop and are painless. This may not be a screamer issue like carpal tunnel syndrome but a subtle thing that builds up over time.
Q. How is it treated?
A. The 3 Bs: blink, breathe, break. With our (computer) monitor set so high, we blink less. Normal blinking is 18-22 times a minute; when we use the computer, it goes down to seven times a minute. Tilting the monitor will help. Breathing is a matter of maintaining blood flow and alertness. When you think about sitting for two hours and not moving much, the blood flow slows down. As for breaks, I developed the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, take 20 seconds and look 20 feet away. It allows your eyes to relax and unfocus during the day.
Q. Are Americans aware of this as a problem?
A. Up to 88 percent of people experience eye strain, whether they are terming it computer vision syndrome or not. Because it`s painless and slow to develop, they might not realize (it`s related to the computer). Someone goes home with a headache and says, `Oh, it`s just a bad day.` It`s important a person gets an eye exam every year, especially computer users.
Q. Why do contact lenses worsen CVS?
A. Lenses require constant cleaning and rewetting -- if you`re wearing a lens that doesn`t maintain moisture, it`s going to dry out quicker. There`s a new category of contact lens that works better, called silicone hydrogels. These lenses stay wetter longer.
Q. What are some tips for dealing with computer use?
A. -- Your (computer) monitor and surrounding illumination should be equal. It`s the same reason your mother told you not to watch TV in the dark.
-- If you have windows, keep them shaded. Make sure the window is off to the side, not behind the monitor or behind you. (A window in front of you promotes eye strain.)
-- Sit back in your chair, and look straight ahead over the top of your monitor.
-- A comfortable work posture means you should reach your arms to the monitor. If you can touch it, you`re too close -- try to keep a minimum of 24 inches between your eyes and the monitor.
-- The top of your monitor should be tilted back so it`s perpendicular to your eyes. (The center of the screen should be 5 to 9 inches below your eye level.)
Q. Computer use continues to explode. What are the long-term ramifications for our eyes?
A. There haven`t been studies that show using a computer is worse than near-point viewing. But studies do show near-point viewing creates nearsightedness and makes it worse. It`s maybe not the computer itself, but the fact we`re doing everything on it. In 1993 the CEO of Apple foresaw a time in the future we`d work, shop and play all on our desktop. Turns out that happened in five years.

Middle Class Goes Broadband As Price Falls

NEW YORK (AP) - Middle- and working-class Americans signed up for high-speed Internet access in record numbers in the past year, apparently lured by a price war among phone companies.
Broadband adoption increased 59 percent from March last year to March 2006 among U.S. households with incomes between $30,000 and $50,000, according to a survey to be released Monday by the Pew Internet and American Life Project.
It increased 40 percent in households making less than $30,000 a year. Among blacks, it increased 121 percent, according to the study.
Middle- and lower-income households still lag higher-income households when it comes to broadband adoption. Among the $30,000-$50,000 households, 43 percent now have broadband, compared to 68 percent for those making more than $75,000.
Overall, 42 percent of adult Americans, or 84 million people, have broadband, compared to 30 percent a year ago.
A separate survey by Leichtman Research said DSL has now overtaken cable modems in popularity among middle-income households, though cable modems still make up the majority of home broadband connections overall, at 52 percent.

A new superbug is stalking the world
IF YOU are unfortunate enough to catch it, you will suffer from intractable diarrhoea with gut-searing pain and fever. If you are frail, you may die. Should you survive, you may be stricken by repeated bouts of sickness. Although methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is more famous, Clostridium difficile is a superbug to be reckoned with. Like many other infections caught in hospital, it is increasingly becoming resistant to treatment with antibiotics.
Rates of the disease among patients in, or recently discharged from, American short-stay hospitals seem to have doubled between 2000 and 2003 and risen another 25% in 2004, the most recent year for which estimates are available. That translates into at least 225,000 new cases a year, according to the Centres for Disease Control, a government agency based in Atlanta, Georgia. As this number does not capture all of America's hospitals and ignores its nursing homes, the real figure is probably at least 500,000 cases a year.
The full extent of the illness is unclear because American hospitals are not required to report it. Even when someone with the disease dies, his death certificate may not say he had it.
Worryingly, the disorder is now being found in people who have not stayed in hospital. This new sort of case includes 48 pregnant women, one of whom died along with her fetus; others miscarried. Some of the people who seem to have caught the disease outside hospital had recently been on antibiotics; early studies suggest that others may have picked up the disease from eating infected animals or by taking medicines to combat heartburn and indigestion.
