  1. Its up to you Vern, I let Chip know you may contact him, but the information someone has been giving you don't sound quite right seeing as we are all routed via Ashburn VA and on up to New York. He may at least be able to give you a time frame for completion on your end.

Until about 3 weeks ago I was routed through Va and NY.

Now I go through Bluefield and Chicago.

    Trace complete.

The tech said they have engineers working on adding capacity in Bluefield now and it should be completed in a couple of days.

This trace was done at 7:47 AM

By 10 AM there will be too much packet loss for the trace to be useful.

Yours is working OK for now but in a few weeks it will have you pulling your hair out again.

That's the pattern this company follows.

I've been dealing with it for 2 and one half years now.

  2. Really? now that is not good, I am going to supply you with another guy that was helping me. he is a good guy and after all the frustration was over I thanked him many times for his assistance.

As a last resort, please contact (SEE YOUR INBOX) CHIP, he will do what he can to restore your service. Let him know Dean sent you :-) Bear in mind that he is in West Virginia so I am not sure if he can help further out in the field.

There isn't anything they can do to improve my connection until the bandwidth is added to the Bluefield line.

And they don't want to talk to me because they don't want to answer my question as to why I was moved to said line to start with and why they reduced my account from 2 megs down to 1 meg down but the up is still @ 640k.

The line tech I spoke with last week said the congestion issue goes all the way to Chicago on their network.

They simply kept adding customers until it completely stopped working before deciding to add capacity.

  3. Did you e-mail

    Ken Arndt

    President, Southeast Region

    [email protected]

??? Trust me HE WILL get things moving for you if you vent to him! YOU WILL get a call within a day or so! Its worth a try and if you have logged this with Tech support, make sure you ask for a FULL refund up-until they get it working as it should be or what your paying for!!!

Your speeds are guaranteed to 80% of your paid quota, if it is less then they HAVE to do something about it, don't give it up yet.... My DSL is finally as it should be after 2 months now.

Been 8 days since I sent him mail.

    No response.

District offices aren't taking calls either.

  4. Would seem they have serious capacity issues, but I did receive a word document that came from high up in Frontier that they are upgrading a lot of the Equipment around in WV and other places with Fiber or newer Lightspans in the telco's. Also new backbones are on the horizon shortly.

I don't see why anyone should have to suffer with speeds like you have, that is plain BS if you ask me and I would certainly complain to Frontiers CEO's about this, they should have had the hardware, the network in place before overloading the system. Keep at them and threaten to go elsewhere, they are loosing customers in WV like you would not believe over this big mess, if I could I would be on the way to Comcast but I don't have the almost $7000 or whatever the extortionate price they want to run 500 Ft of cable.

They told me they are adding a new line in Bluefield; didn't say it was fiber though.

Supposed to be completed by this time next week.

If it doesn't improve by next week I am going back to dial up since it is better than what I have right now.

  5. Mine was down from 6 pm last night to 5pm today.

Tech had to bring me a new modem.

Something the changed in the DSLAM switch caused both my older 6520 modems to not get DSL sync.

New modem connected and he said problem solved.

    Problem far from solved.

They reduced my downstream rate from 2 megs to 1 meg and changed me to the bluefield line that has been massively saturated for almost a year now.

this is what I'm dealing with now.

I will be calling the district manager in Bluefield tomorrow and then most likely the WV Public Service Commission to file a formal complaint.

Another thing to watch for with high ping times is noise on your line, distance from the telco and so on... but I take it nothing new has changed for you apart from Frontier taking over?

No I have always been with Frontier / Citizens since they bought out AlTell back in the 80s.

But things have went downhill since they took over the Verizon mess in WV.

I'm only 500 feet from the DSLAM and it is all new copper between me and it.

  6. "extreme ping times of 150ms and for DSL that SUCKS!"

That's not even close to extreme for frontier.

I'm a few miles to the south of you and for the past 3 days my average pings to yahoo have been running at more than 1000 ms.

150 ms for me would be unbelievably fast atm.

  7. Wasn't environmental advice; was financial in nature.

And also, wasn't advice; just something to think about.

I used to leave mine on 24 / 7 until I had to buy a 550 watt power supply in order to use the big video card I had bought to play oblivion IV with.

A few minutes with the calculator and I decided it was better for me and my monthly power bill if I shut it down when not in use.

A few pennies here, a few pennies there; and after a years time; that's a lot of beer.

  8. If you don't mind paying for the wasted power usage then leaving it running all the time shouldn't cause any problems.

Considering that an average PC now uses 450 watts or more of power; over the course of a 24 hour period, that adds about $1.30 per day to your power bill.

  9. There is a way to force it to load the os in the BIOS.

The WD drive uses what is called SMART technology that reports any errors during POST to the BIOS and the machine then halts.

Doing that could possibly corrupt the good drives though.

    Don't give up.

I don't remember exactly what all I did to recover the data from my failed drive but I do know it took quite a while to get it.

    At least a month.

On the ultimate boot CD choose and run the WD diagnostics program.

Boot from the CD with only the bad drive connected.

Whether you get your data back or not; it is a good idea to buy an external HDD and make regular back ups of your important stuff.

  10. Actually nothing of major importance has ever been changed by voting.

Governments exist in a constant state of fear.

Fear of losing control of the people they govern.

Real change only happens when that fear level reaches the point where they have no choice but to do the will of the people.

The last time that happened in this country was during the late 60s and early 70s.

  11. Now!!! before there are two classes of people the very rich and the dirt poor with nothing inbetween

    It's already that way.

It has always been that way.

If you wanna be completely factual about it.

The USA was founded by the rich who were pissed off at King George for trying to make them less rich.

Then, when on break from sticking knives in the backs of the Indians, without which, King George would have won, they did this.

    http://www.google.com/#hl=en&safe=off&num=100&q=whiskey+rebellion&lr=&fp=N_TS5SbXs3E

Of the rich, by the rich, and for the rich.

Always been that way and always will be.

  12. I suppose when a political party is completely out of ideas, grasping at broken straws seems like a good plan.

    Why not?

They got nothing else and it just gets worse as time passes and the truth slowly trickles out about what transpired over the past 8 years.

    The most laughable thing?

We still have Cheney pandering to the TV cameras trying desperately to peddle that same ole fear fear fear, trust us... we will protect you bull hockey.

One thing I'm certain we can all agree on:

The GOP is broken and do you really think "tea parties" is going to mend it?

The fake patriotism isn't working anymore.

  13. Look in the BIOS for Boot Up Floppy Seek and disable that as well as the floppy in the boot sequence.

That should solve the hit F! to continue annoyance on bootup.

If that doesn't work, as a last resort, try going into standard features in BIOS and setting halt on to all but diskette and keyboard.

That should also allow your keyboard to work through the usb port.

Note: If you need to get back into BIOS after doing this you will prolly need to reconnect the keyboard to the ps2 port to do it.

  14. Yes, as another poster said, you need to go into the BIOS and disable the floppy drive.

You may be more comfortable getting the local teen geek to do this for you.

EDIT: You may need to use an usb to ps2 adapter for your keyboard to do this.

  15. Sounds like it is time to get a can of compressed air, open up the case, and give all the fans and heat sinks a good cleaning.

And a fan that starts making noise that it didn't used to make means it is time to replace the fan.

  16. Most likely your turntable does not have a built in pre amp.

About 10 years ago I wanted to connect my sound card to my house stereo.

Needed a 15 foot cable. Could only find a 10 foot one. Bought 2 10 footers and did a " twist n tape" splice to make the length I needed.

Later I used that same cable to go from tape out on stereo to line in on sound card to make cd copies of my old vinyl albums.
