  1. http://raleigh.craigslist.org/ret/1144994189.html update: Posted April 28th, on craigslist again, I'll head down to the Verizon Store and ask around and see whats up. Anyone else have any more word on Fios in Durham?
  2. Found this on craigslist http://raleigh.craigslist.org/ret/1011428071.html it was posted 1/28/2009 and I went down to the Briar Creek Verizon Wireless store and no one seemed to know anything. Infact the "sales rep" for there Internet/etc said its not due to come here anytime soon. I am almost tempted to apply for the job and not take the position just to find out when Fios will be available. Any updates for Durham/Raleigh, NC? I've googled and searched and the last thing mentioned was last year around Jan 2008 and then October of 2008....
  3. you can build a PC cheaper than you can buy one if you can't order form a distributor like MaxGroup, then you can order from Newegg or Tigerdirect, or Globalcomputer (same as tiger, no sales tax in tiger states) sinse you are going with a XPS PC, I would suggest VERY highly that you build it yourself. you can put the best components in it for a WHOLE LOT less building it yourself than if you buy it from dell. Besides that dell + customer service = oxymoron
  4. it shouldn't depend on your motherboard, as a computer is a computer weither you build it or bought the box from the store. If the FSB on the CPU is 333mhz then put PC2700 in it, PC2700 runs a clock speed of 333Mhz which is a 1:1 ratio with the computer, this speed is the MOST the CPU can do so I can assure you it probably wont do that all the time so you would be safe with PC2700 as long as you dont want to over clock it. If you want to over clock it then you would want to get some faster ram like the PC3500 or PC4000 etc, the only advantage these rams have over one another is the ability to push more Gb/s of data through them, sinse your processor can only do 333mhz FSB it wont really matter unless its overclocked as the RAM can only get stuff to your CPU as fast as the CPU can take it. when I did my bench marks with my older computer, when the ram was the same FSB as the CPU I got more memory read/write bandwidth. Again it wont matter the motherboard as the RAM can only get it to your CPU as fast as the FSB will take it. surrfice to say 333mhz is max for that chip then PC2700 is the max you should need...again unless you overclock that is.. Memory is the bottleneck in most old and semi new computers especially with the now built in memory controllers, but that is another issue all together. Get the PC2700 is you dont want to overclock it and have it running at stock speeds or possibly a little faster, but not much (and by not much I mean not much). If you want to do some serious overclocking then get some PC4000 or PC4200 and get some serious air or water cooling and you might have a smoking rig on yer hands! ~BW25
  5. I personally dont think its a motherboard issue however it wouldn't really suprise me that much if it was, however I just dont think given the problem and symptoms that its that. I think its more along the lines of a powersupply issue (maybe a cord, but doubtful as well). Those little computers from Emachine or HP/Compaq, all come with those ity bitty 250w - 325w powersupply, even 350 is a little small, but good enough if you never change anything internal to it. I suggest for the budget minded, get you an emachine on sale THEN add a Gig of DDR Ram and put you a video card in it, PCIe would be best! You would have a screaming lil machine that could have the potential to rock! I wont let anyone near my gaming rig unless its my wife or dad. I have another computer I use for backup and its an older 1900 AMD with 1TB HD Space, I let my wifes friends and family use that one they never know the difference thanks to my KVM from linksys (push scroll lock twice and boom) For those that are wondering its a AMD 3700 San Diego Core (stock speed), 6800 GS Video Card, 2 GB PC 3500 RAM and just over 1TB HD Space in this one as well. They are SATA-2 Drives and they are fast! Its not as nice as some but hell you'd pay a pretty penny for that from Dell or Alienware, it cost me for the case and everything under $1100, its nice purchasing from a distributor
  6. never under estimate the power of computer illiterate people in small or large groups!
  7. my personal opinion an emachine is like a disposable computer, when it breaks throw it away and get a new one. If you do want a new one check out newegg.com, or check out tigerdirect, if you get charged tax from tiger, then go to www.globalcomputer.com they are a sister site of systmaxx which owns tigerdirect! they dont charge tax! The most simple things to try would be make sure the powercord is pluged in ALL THE WAY in the back of the PSU, My desktop would cut off periodically and I thought it was the power supply, but the cord was just loose! If that aint it make sure the PSU is connected to the MB, It should be if noone has tinkered with it when they shouldn't have. Like wise I dont see how ram can be a problem if noone has opened this box before (assuming noone has opened it of course). If it can't be fixed buy a new one they are dirt cheap, you can build her one cheaper but remember you get what you pay for (buying from a distributor you can). My .02cents are either a Power Cord Issue or a Power Supply Issue, possible that it could be a Motherboard problem, however that would be rare considering it cuts on to begin with. You can test the PSU with a simple volt meter, make sure you check all 20 or 24 pins on the PSU Power Cable going to the MB, you also need to check the wall outlet and the cord going from the outlet to the back of the PSU. Brown Out's can cause this issue also. Be careful if it is a brown out because this sort of thing if the computer is plugged directly into the wall can cause some electrical damage to the internal components to the computer. To fix a Brown Out call the power company and ask WTF they are doing! Or cheaper yet get a simple surge protector.
  8. Can't wait to see if they upgrade us all to the premium package! maybe fios is making its way, maybe that is why they are up letting us go faster!
  9. :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 5820 Kbps about 5.8 Mbps (tested with 5983 kB) Download Speed is:: 710 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (main) Test Time:: 2006/03/05 - 1:07pm Bottom Line:: 104X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 1.44 sec Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 33.46 % faster than the average for host (rr.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-YKMJ2VUSO I live in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina and that is my most recent speed test result, I consistantly get above 5mpbs now (I downgraded from premium, to much money!) any upgrades in the pipes? Also I did an upload test for everyone wondering here it is below: :::.. Upload Stats ..::: Connection is:: 363 Kbps about 0.4 Mbps (tested with 579 kB) Upload Speed is:: 44 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (main) Test Time:: 2006/03/05 - 12:10pm Bottom Line:: 6X faster than 56K 1MB Upload in 23.27 sec Diagnosis: Looks Great : 13.79 % faster than the average for host (rr.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-5TKRN3MAY Any upgrades? Its just weird to have THIS much more than what I am supposed to get..... I pay for 5000/384
  10. i have to agree I would take a week off to get that upload speed! It would make it so nice to send family videos to my brother in iraq, pictures and play online games (thats the real reason!), nothing like snipping people in battlefield 2 on fios! however I am stuck with TWC RR, when will we get fios in NC? Just be patient, many of us who haven't got fios are learning that concept right now. Hopefully we will have it by summers end, as road runner is upgrading or so I hear, so maybe they know there will be competition coming (fios maybe?)!?
  11. VOIP has a lot to do with upload bandwidth, have you done any speed tests to make sure that you get the upload that you are supposed to? Are you using another router other than theres, if so do you have PPPoE enabled on it? Are you connecting wirelessly to your router? If so then sometimes wireless technology can drop out, or atleast on some of the older A/B routers. I know my router at home sucks nuts (linksys, its old and drops stuff alot). It very well could be verizon, that screwed it up. I would have to make sure all my crap was in order before I called them and started complaining. Did you have VOIP before like vonage or the voicewing or packet8 before? Did you have trouble then? You are lucky to have FIOS, we want it in Durham , NC!!!!
  12. sweeet! I read the article, does it still run on gas and hydraulic energy? if so how much furthure would it go on diesel than gas? hmmmm, I can bet this, it wont be long and it will be in cars, and ford will make a fortune selling it to other companies, imagine the royalities they could make!
  13. first off lets try somethings to get this fixed, in the game change your resolution to say 800x600, that should be a very easy resolution for that card to handle, if not try 640x480, i know it will be big, but at these settings I can ASSURE you that it shouldn't over heat. Also check the details and such, make sure you aren't playing them maxxed out, because that card wont handle it very well at all, it might play it for a while but you will have an overheating problem and it would be choppy to boot. Make sure you have proper air flow, check to make sure your IDE/Sata cables aren't blocking the airflow from the case fans. At home on my gaming machine, I have to blow it out bi-weekly we have a cat and it sheds that hair everywhere. We have 5 case fans and you can't hear the computer running, if you want when I get home I will post the name and model #'s of my fans, nice air flow, quite, and no temp problems at all. Get some of that air dust stuff and blow the entire inside of your case out, including the heat sink/fan and all case fans should be wiped off with a damp paper towel, besure to DRY THEM either with a dry paper towel or a blow dryer, you dont want that water to get slung onto the motherboard, that wouldn't be a pretty site, and other dust that is in there should be wiped out with a dry paper towel or just blown out with the air dust ($4.99 at walmart). Dust is your #1 enemy and will kill a CPU in a hurry. Also make sure you haven't over clocked it, as sometimes overclocking can lead to heat and instability issues, not to mention it voids your warranty on your CPU. Now with all that said, if you turn the details down to 640x480 or 800x600 and everything works fine, then still blow the dust out and make sure of the cables being tied down and out of the way to give you a neat looking case. Then you should be done, and finish up your little project by running defrag on your harddrive as it never hurts (however i wont use the windows defrag, use O&O Defrag). I know you have heard this before also if you want to make sure its not a heat related problem get a desktop fan and take the side cover off or just crack it a little, and let that fan blow some real air in there! if nothing seems to work let us know, and someone here will be GLAD to help you!
  14. what graphics card do you have? I have the 6800GS PCIe, and have all the details maxed and play for hours with no problems! First thing first, update your drivers from the nvidia site, not some beta crap from a search on google! Also make sure if you dont have a higher end video card that you turn the resolution down to say 1024x768 at the highest, also if that doesn't help you may want to run a program that tells you the internal temp, of the computer right AFTER the game crashes, that may give you some idea as to why you are having problems, if nothing else it will tell you if its heat related or not After 4 years in the military and over 14 years as a gamer, heat is your BIGGEST problem! I have 5 case fans running in my tower (2x rear, 2x front, 1x side) I have an AMD 3700+, 6800GS 256MB, 1GB Ram and close to 700GB hard drive space, and an old samsung monitor, its great to bad its big and heavy. I dont have a problem running anything but F.E.A.R, that games sucks the life out of almost anything!
  15. I wouldn't need the DVR however it would be handy to have! So all in all without the DVR I would be looking at after tax $55 + fios which is faster than my roadrunner I'd be looking at less than $100, which I pay for standard/basic cable (NOT DIGITAL), Road Runner Premium (8mb/512kb) @ $123/month! I'm getting the shaft, I would be paying less for all that with FIOS I WANT FIOS IN NC!!! any clue when its coming to the RTP/Raleigh/Durham Area, I know there is MCI/Verizon Fiber poles (those little orange things marking where the fiber is), but no commercials yet
  16. i'm on wireless right now :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 43632 Kbps about 43.6 Mbps (tested with 12160 kB) Download Speed is:: 5326 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (server2) Test Time:: Fri Jan 20 13:00:49 EST 2006 Bottom Line:: 779X faster than 56K 1MB download in 0.19 sec Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 189.64 % faster than the average for host (duke.edu) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-6W3SCNZIT

On my Ethernet connection I average on an NDT Test Server in California (i'm in NC at Duke) I can easily get 80Mb Download and 80Mb Upload. If it gets less than that for me then it is slow, I have tested out at 100/100 download/upload on an NDT Server before. I can download on average close to 11.5MB (yes megabytes) a sec from most sites that support that large bandwidth! But still 9Mb still isn't bad, try tweaking with cable nut, i'm sure someone here can probably help you out and get you closer to the 15 or 20mb range!
  18. yah have to agree, you can get a far better deal if you buy an acer notebook! I work with some excellent distributors and I know that dell sounds like a great deal, but if you shop around you will find out you can get more for your money! if you want some help looking just ask here I or someone here will be glad to help you! check with pricegrabber.com also if you are one of the un lucky soles that lives in a state where tigerdirect charges tax, then check out globalcomputer.com, they are a sister company and dont charge tax in NJ, FL, or NC
  19. This thought jumped into my mind, why on Gods green earth would you ask something on an OPEN FORUM that is illegal. Even if we answered your question, we would be accessories to your crime, and well I dont have that kind of cash just sitting in my sock for a rainy day! My suggestion would be buy the damn movie, hell when it first comes out they are on sell at walmart, target, and kmart. If you search you can find them cheap from alot of e-tailers (check pricegrabber.com) Of course one could argue that well "I own the DVD and I want a backup, have you seen how a 2 year old handles DVD's?" but the simple parenting response should be to smack that little kid if they scratch it or better yet the adult thing to do is to take care of your stuff and you wouldn't need a backup copy, or in this case a copy of probably a blockbuster rental (or maybe netflix?) either way, you shouldn't ask for information on how to remove protection from something that is COPYRIGHTED, to reverse engineer a protection even on something that you OWN is illegal (a felony). So unless you want to spend time in jail and pay some un godly amount of money then just go buy the damn 15.95 movie from walmart or kmart! -this topic should be locked and closed-
  20. lmao, i clicked the 12Mb file that Van posted and got this Sorry, your score of 99512 Kbps is over TestMy.net's max of 60000 Kbps. I doubt your connection is faster than 60000 Kbps... Please RETEST Some firewalls may need to be taken down for TestMy.net to work. After the firewall is taken down your browser may need to be restarted also. Clicking the back button repeatedly in your browser often is the cause of this error, please refrain from using your browsers back button if you get this error often. If you still have problems please try testing with flat-file testing its not cached either
  21. now i'm back at work, and here are the results for testmy.net :::.. 22. from here with that file I get approx 7.505Mb on my first test and exactly the same on my second :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 7505 Kbps about 7.5 Mbps (tested with 5983 kB) Download Speed is:: 916 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2) Test Time:: Fri Jan 6 23:14:07 UTC+0100 2006 Bottom Line:: 134X faster than 56K 1MB download in 1.12 sec Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 74.62 % faster than the average for host (rr.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-F1I7ASHMT oh well so much for my 10+ Mb I had the other month here on RR, oh well, maybe they will upgrade soon?
  23. I'd have to say a hardware firewall, Kapersky, and Kerio Firewall, but thats just me, they (the software) are not resource hungry and the provide some of the best if not the best combination of security for end users.
  24. after tweaking I can get average of 7.3 - 7.5 a slight increase, but not what i had expected!
  25. trying it out right now, I went to a website where you can put in your connection speed and got the settings from there I tried to download from aol.com the "setupaol6.0.exe" file as it is 40MB and I maxed out at only 966KB/s. Thats only 7.727 Mb/s, thats 0.3Mb/s off of what I want!
