  1. I have been looking to either upgrade my current desktop or just wait until i can build my own from scratch. With all the new stuff that has come out lately it seems like now would be a good time to upgrade. I don't play a whole lot of games but would like something that could at least play Battlefield 2 and similar games without a problem. The computer is an HP with a single core AMD Athlon XP 2800+ with just 512mb of ddr sdram and 64mb of onboard graphics. The model is A320N if that helps. I know for sure I'll need to get more memory and an actual graphics card. not sure exactly what i need as I have heard of unbuffered ram and such. I've looked around on newegg and also ebay but seeing as how i don't have much experience with this stuff i haven't gotten anything yet. I just need enough to make it run a bit better without making it more practical to just build something new. I'll also be upgrading my 17" crt monitor to something bigger and better. I have looked into 19" widescreens but it seems i'd be better off with a 22". I believe the size difference would depend some on my computer too. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
  2. Well it's about that time again. It's Christmas time and like every year I like to buy myself something nice after I finish shopping for everybody else. I got a nice bonus from work so I'm thinking about buying a new toy. I'm really considering either an LCD monitor for my desktop or a tv tuner for my laptop. I don't know a whole lot about LCDs cause I have always had CRT monitors but it's about time for an upgrade I think. I'd like to stay around the $200 range, possible a little more if it's a good deal. I'd kinda like a regular screen as opposed to a widescreen since I use my desktop more for gaming than anything else. I don't need anything huge but I figure i should be able to find a good 19" in my price range. Not sure about brands or anything. I've heard Samsung makes good monitors but I haven't owned one yet. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
  3. Well the laptop from J&R didn't work out. I waited too long and now they're out of stock. I've been looking around a lot on ebay cause i want to get the most computer for my money but I'm kinda scared to order something that big on there. I'd really like the 17" monitor cause it would be really nice for movies which is something i plan to use it for a lot but from what I hear the battery life isn't so great on those for obvious reasons. It's hard for me to settle for just anything. I'd like something with 2GB of ram so i don't have to worry about upgrading it later on but not sure if it's really needed or not. I've heard mixed reviews on Vista both on here and elsewhere so I can't decide if I want it or to just stick with XP. I know i definitely want something with at least a 120GB hard drive so I don't have to worry about space. Maybe you all know of some sites I could look at to find the best possible deal, or maybe shed some light on the whole idea of buying a laptop on ebay. Also, if somebody could explain to me exactly what cache is and how important that is? Thanks again.
  4. Thanks for all the advice guys. I've been looking around myself and came across this one... http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=4162127 Now I have never ordered anything through them but figured it might be worth it. This looks like a pretty good deal. Maybe some of you have order through J&R. I saw it was refurbished. Not sure if this is right but doesn't that mean it's been factory tested to be as good as new?
  5. Thanks for the advice guys. Both those laptops look pretty nice. If you all say i should go with Intel over AMD I'll do it. I've been looking around a little but can't seem to find much I like. It's kinda hard for me to settle with something anyway. lol. I was hoping to get something with possibly a 17" monitor. i know my price range is a little low. About how much would i need to go up to get a screen that big? Weight is also not an issue as i don't have a problem carrying around something a little heavier. I wouldn't be against having a laptop with WinXP rather than Vista for all the negative things I've heard about the new OS. Also wouldn't be against something refurbished if anybody knows of a good site for them. As you all can probably tell I don't know a whole lot of what I'm talking about. lol. Thanks again.
  6. Well it's tax time again and I like to spoil myself with something nice once a year. This year I'm looking to buy a new laptop since I've never owned one of my own. Not really sure where to look. I don't need the top of the line but would like to get the best for my money. I'll be looking at about the $700-$800 price range. I'd like something i can play and burn dvds on with a good size screen. Wireless internet is a must also. I guess I'm just looking for some advice. I'm kind of a fan of AMD but wouldn't mind going with Intel if the price was right. Thanks a lot.
  7. I'd look pissed too if I was 200+ years old. Imagine their portraits in 2107. Kinda makes you wonder which of our wonderful recent presidents will be on money if it hasn't all gone electronic in 100 years.
  8. I could be wrong but i was just looking at the US Mint website and it shows "In God We Trust" on the outside edge of the coin. I haven't seem them for myself so i don't know. I'm not a religious person but i think it's pretty messed up if they did take that off. It's what this country was founded on and I feel like it should always be that way.
  9. Thanks alot for those links guys I remember back when I had linux installed on an old computer i was running win98 and just partitioned the harddrive and installed linux on the same drive. Is it possible to install each OS on a different drive and how would that work?
  10. Hi everybody. I'm pretty new to the whole world of Linux. I installed a version of Redhat on an older computer but it's been 3 or 4 years. I'm wanting to install a newer version on one of my computers I have now more as just something to play around with. I have a spare 40 gig harddrive and was wondering if it's possible to install linux completely seperate on there without having to change anything on the main harddrive where i have WinXP installed. Any information on what version or distribution i should use or how I'd go about doing that. I don't need detailed directions on here, a link where i could learn more about it would be great. Thanks alot.
  11. I tried them all the first time and couldn't hear anything, kinda scared me. Then when my dumb ass woke up the rest of the way and realized my speakers were off, i turned them on and could hear all of them
  12. Hey everybody. I Just recently moved to a smaller town and had to downgrade my internet. I use to have Mediacom cable and had a 5mb download speed but the only thing out here is Centurytel DSL. My question is, i've looked around and tried to find a way to speed up my connection a bit. Here's my download test.... :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 2949 Kbps about 2.95 Mbps (tested with 1496 kB) Download Speed is:: 360 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (Server 1) Test Time:: 2006/06/02 - 11:58am Bottom Line:: 51X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 2.84 sec Tested from a 1496 kB file and took 4.156 seconds to complete Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.4) Gecko/20060508 Firefox/1.5.0.4 Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 91.37 % faster than the average for host (centurytel.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-G9FTL3OSX And my upload test.... :::.. Upload Stats ..::: Connection is:: 527 Kbps about 0.53 Mbps (tested with 1013 kB) Upload Speed is:: 64 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (Server 1) Test Time:: 2006/06/02 - 12:01pm Bottom Line:: 9X faster than 56K 1MB Upload in 16 sec Tested from a 1013 kB file and took 15.75072 seconds to complete Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.4) Gecko/20060508 Firefox/1.5.0.4 Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 122.36 % faster than the average for host (centurytel.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-5OCPVAQDZ I don't understand all the kbps and kB/s and Mbps stuff so i could just be misunderstanding all this. when i go to the DSL router address it gives me this... DSL Connect Rate (Down/Up) 3584 KBits/Sec by 608 KBits/Sec Maybe somebody could clear this up for me and let me know if I'm at my max or if there's anything i can do to speed it up a bit? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
  13. I'm probably just looking at this wrong or trying to find a reason why my computer is running slower than normal but i was messing around with Everest looking at stuff on my computer and found this and thought I'd see what you all thought. Under Front Side Bus Properties and Memory Bus Properties it shows the Effective Clock speed as 333 MHZ but the Real Clock speed as 167 MHZ. Is it me or does that not seem right? I realize this computer isn't top of the line by any means but I'd like to be able to squeeze any last bit of speed I can out of it. Also, I'm wanting to upgrade the RAM but not sure where the best place to buy it would be. I've checked newegg and ebay and a few other sites but not sure if it'll be compatible. It's an HP Pavilion a320n computer with 512mb ram right now. I know it uses pc2700 ram. I believe it's suppose to be Non-ECC low density ram but i don't know much about all that stuff. Last time I upgraded the RAM in a computer was when I installed a couple 128 pc100 chips . Thanks for any help you all may have.
  14. I'm new to this whole forum thing so I'm not sure how it all works. I'd appreciate any advice you guys can give me. Lately my computer has been randomly rebooting itself. I have no idea why. Also, when i open up "My Computer" and try to view files or play music or movies it freezes, sometimes just for a second or two and sometimes i have to reboot manually. I regularly use Ad-Aware and Spybot and recently defragged my HD which i'll be doing more of now. Here are my system specs.. let me know if you need any other info. Hp Pavilion a320n AMD 2800+ processor 512mb DDR Ram 120GB HD with 26% free Onboard audio, video, and LAN Windows XP Home with a full install of SP2 from the Microsoft site. Thanks
