I've come up with something new. Personally I think that it adds a new demension on your download speed test results taken here.

I devised a way to take measurments during the test, using those numbers I then plot a graph of the path of the download speed.

Check out these insane speeds all the way from Singapore to Dallas TX. Notice how the dip at the start of the test brings the overall score down to 170Mbps when it actually topped out at 323 Mbps.

I think this extra set of data is going to be very helpful for troubleshooting. This is in early stages, I'm only doing it on the default Texas server for now. I wanted to nail down the proof of concept before I expanded it to all the mirrors.

I plan on expanding this to take more measurments and also log the information to a database. So you'll have not only a history of your tests... you'll basically have a history of tests within tests. You can really tell a lot about what happened durring the test with this extra information. I hope you all like the idea.

Side note, with the addition of logging TiP stats I'll also add a whole new array of datapoints that will be logged, such as browser and OS. So average speeds and ranking of browsers and operating systems will be possible. So keep an eye out for that in the near future.

I can't beleive I was able to go from idea to proof of concept in >24 hours. I realized that the system I already had built was totally ready to do that trick already... I just had to give it a little upgrade. Trust me, it's going to get better. ... this is just the TiP...

Kind of amazing that you can use a tablet and get speeds 500 times what we used to get on the fastest home computers not all that long ago.

I can't say as I really miss the singing gurgling RS232 modem sounds. Half the time, that sound resulted in a no-connection. Haha

And Biggles: China probably owns 1/2 of Dallas.

That was on an iPad with Time Warner's latest 15 Mbps down/ 1 Mbps up service upgrade as of January this year.

The variation in the TiP data points is about what I would expect. With this ISP I see quite a bit of variation depending on prime time vs non-prime time. My "normal" comdition extremes are about 8 to 18 Mbps average download speeds depending on time of day, with about 15 Mbps being my new long term average. It was only 8 under their old service last year.

This is very useful stuff CA3LE. Thanks

Dammit ,I guess I got to move to Singapore , but then maybe Singapore is v. close to Dallas , ?
just guesing on that , being there is so much Chinese stuff in America , LOL ( Brit humour strikes again )

Just been Testing with my Brit Telecom  ISP , using my rock solid 40 X8 conection to TMN Amsterdam Netherlands ,( 300 miles )
     repetedly gives. 2.9 down 6 up , while a download from  M/soft USA gives 4.4 ,
and a dreaded Flash test to Kansk USSR (3000 miles) gives 29.8 down 4 up  , local UK, admitedly flash tests, gives me 37.5 X 8.2 ,
to be honest I have given up speed testing full stop , too many varibles IMHO .

BTW Pgoodwin,  from memory TIP stands for "trouble in paradise ,"  maybe I am wrong on that ?

On the TestMy Home page, read all of the info on the tabs (mid page) marked: Internet Speed Test, Information, What Males TMN Different, and Speed Test Principals.

In short, all,of the test tools that you've likely used to date are inaccurate. The ISPs use them because they have been fine tuned to show the ISP performance to be some high number, even when the real performance is much less than those tools show. If you want to know what your real world up/sown speeds are in a much more representative environment, TMN is what you should use.

Your speeds however are significantly lower than than what their plan limits are advertised to be indicating to me that you may have a problem. My history with Time Warner in the past has been that I register download speeds here that were 1/3 to 1/2 or so of the speeds registered on their speed measuring tools. Upload speeds historically were about 80% of what their tools showed. Lately, since they upgraded their service, I'm showing right at their "guaranteed" download on average. Upload speeds still 80%. Also historically, their tools showed me to be getting 2 to 2.5 times their "guaranteed" speeds. I don't know how the ISPs get away with the use of these tools. It would seem a class action suit should be filed, but since virtually all the ISPs use the ookla Flash based tools or something similar, the suit would be suing the world, and would likely be hard to get any significant damages, so nobody sues.

The fact that your download speed though is only 1/6 of your 50 Mbps plan claim, it seems like there's some sort of problem. Can you hardwire right to your cable modem and tell us what you get?

There are times though when I consistently get about 1/2 Time Warner's 15 Mbps "guaranteed" min. Normally this occurs during the day, and often later at night, speeds are up again.

    First, WELCOME!

I know what that error is.. but I can't duplicate it.

So I'm selected on the NL server... I go to the upload test and select a size manually... it works.  I run an automatic test and select the sizes manually.. it works.  I run other test types.. they work... I run download tests... they work too.

I believe that you got the error... I'm just wondering why.  That happens when form data required to process the results is missing from the request.

First, try again... this may have been tied somehow to a glitch earlier that I resolved. (although I doubt it) ... if it persists, please clear your cache and cookies... if it still persists please let me know and I'll look deeper into the issue.  You can also directly request tests using the following format.
https://testmy.net/dl-1MB - 1MB Download Test https://testmy.net/ul-1MB - 1MB Upload Test Using this format you can manually select 1-200MB download speed tests and 1-33MB upload speed tests. The data is built automatically and sizes are completely dynamic, exactly the size you request, so feel free to use decimals in the sizes. If you were requesting this from a mirror, simply append the subdomain. e.g. 1MB upload test to NL would be http://eu.testmy.net/ul-1MB. Also, enter the size in kB by dropping the 'MB' in the URL. e.g. https://testmy.net/dl-1024 would run a 1024 kB download speed test. -- Pretty nifty little trick, huh! Thanks for the feedback!

My speed limitation is with my ISP. My iPad TMN speed measurements are about the same on the iPad as they are on the iMac which is a wired Ethernet thru my AirPort Extreme, gigabit switch to my router which is 10/100. The modem I have is a Motorola SurfBoard DOCISS 2 and my ISP Time Warner's RoadRunner is a 15 Mbps down/1 Mbps up turbo service....cheap. The iPad gives me speeds right at the ISP's 15 Mbps rating, sometimes higher. The iMac is maybe 10-15% faster usually. So my RoadRunner package limits my speed.

The TMN website acts really well on the iPad Safari. I don't do much measuring on my iPhone 4, because with the iPad, I don't do much on the web with the phone because of all the re-sizing you have to do to read stuff. the iPad is way better.

I have a iPhone5 and DroidX, both 4" displays... I like it better without the mobile theme.  It used to default to the mobile theme, since I changed it visitors from mobile devices are actually way up.

... I'm starting to shy away from doing multiple layouts because I feel that people will be using their devices browsers much like desktop browsers.  You might not be doing that now, but I bet you will.  It saves me time that I can put towards other efforts.

What I could do, and I think this would make everyone happy, is add a notice for mobile detected users.  Nonintrusive, but visible on the page unless hidden.  Asking if you'd like to simplify the layout.

Thanks, I use the site often on my iPad so I try to make it work right with it.  It has a little different feel than a desktop, it definitely processes information differently... you can see by how the progress bar loads.  Before I got my iPad I was using Xcode to emulate it... I think it's awesome that the emulator feels exactly how the real iPad does.  Really helped me develop for it when I didn't have one.

I've noticed that the iPad definitely has its speed limitations... no matter how fast the connection you're on.  Maybe software limited... I have a Retina iPad (my iPad Speed Test Results).  Best I've seen is ~ 43Mbps / 5Mbps but only an average of 18.8 Mbps / 3.7 Mbps... on a 150/20 Mbps connection.  Granted, the best I've seen on this supposed 150 Mbps / 20 Mbps connection is 95/15 --- but even at that speed it's obvious that the iPad isn't going to go faster, it has more than enough on tap if it were able to.  I bet with some software modification it could go faster.....

Note to mods and others who care to know.  People will often make posts like this to get past the first few posts, get a couple posts approved and then attempt to spam freely once their account is trusted.  Well, doesn't really work because although it may let them post freely after two approved posts... new people are watched for long after that.  Get caught once, BAN and the email address is shared with thousands of other websites to prevent registration and spamming on other sites.  This really isn't the place to try and spam these days.
