Hey, I've got an idea -- run a test to 127.0.0.1 -- now that will give you awesome results

j/k man, if your not getting decent results from any of the servers , try looking into the issue s testing closer will not do you any good in finding the real issues see

Have you done a traceroute to the main testmy.net server, or a ping test , all this will lead you to the slowest hop in your route.
Here's a test to the cupertino server , and I'm at work with a 30/2 connection , in Ohio to california

    Here is Los Angeles server

Inexco... to me... your post looks kinda like spam.

As long as you'r not a bot... Welcome!  ... but... usually, a post like that... from someone in Asia who hasn't even used the speed test.  Usually points to spam.

... It kinda unusual for someone to just say "nice to be a part of this community" as their first post.  Inexco, if I'm wrong... let me know.  But I've just seen a lot of spam in my day... and it often reads like this.

Note to mods and others who care to know.  People will often make posts like this to get past the first few posts, get a couple posts approved and then attempt to spam freely once their account is trusted.  Well, doesn't really work because although it may let them post freely after two approved posts... new people are watched for long after that.  Get caught once, BAN and the email address is shared with thousands of other websites to prevent registration and spamming on other sites.  This really isn't the place to try and spam these days.

This question was submitted in January 2012. As of Late August 2012 this has yet to be released but I currently have plans on the table and this project is a top priority. Look for this to possibly be released in beta format in first quarter 2013.

Well I am the guy in Vegas that they told that to LOL. Maybe I should move to Arizona. Seems that Cox runs things very  differently  there!

The above is what I find to be common place with Cox CS reps here. I was only over by like 10GB but was told point blank that because it happened 2 months in a row if I did not update from Premium to Ultimate then they would cancel my service. However, I was also told that if I added TV to my service it would help me to cut down on my internet usage. Now that I have had Ultimate for 3 months I just got another email saying that My account "routinely" hits the cap and that if it continues I need to  conceder  adding a second account to my service address.

And No I am not doing torrents (have a seedbox for those LOL). My bandwidth is from movie streaming (Amazon, Netflix, Hulu) and gaming. Seems Cox here in Las Vegas don't like folks who cut the cord and watch TV via the internet.

Not only do they not mention in, they do not even have any information on it any where online if you are not a Cox customer to see prior to buying. This is a transcript of an online chat I had with one of their sales reps about this on February 13, 2013 (yesterday morning):

I would be really interested in finding out how they can hold someone to  certain  terms when they refuse to disclose those terms prior to entering into an agreement with them.

Well... your upload is all of those numbers    -- you're seeing how the browser choice effects upload speed to websites.  I recommend that you test with the browser that provides the fastest result.  The fastest result is going to be closest to your actual speed... the slower speeds are being caused by browser inefficiency.  As you've just displayed this isn't only a Internet speed test... it's also a great way to benchmark performance between browsers.       --- other speed tests out there don't work this way because the plugins that they use bypass much of the browser... imagine that a flash or java speed test is actually a program within a program.  Truly, you're running the test through Flash or java protocol, not really the browser.  The browser in that instance is merely a frame holding the third party program... that in turn can cause the test to miss MANY common issues that slow down your browsing experience.

What I show you is the speed at which things load in your browser.  I could have made it a thousand different ways but my thought was that the average Internet user is spending their time in the browser.  Also, testing outside of the browser requires either a program running outside of the browser, Flash or Java.  Flash... is faulty,  Java inconveniences people who don't have it and so does downloading and installing programs..... so I built mine with PHP and HTML5 so that people could just load the site and do what they came to do without frustration.  I aim for 100% compatibility with a single program. Others do it differently... all I know is that time and time again TestMy.net passively detects physical issues that others fail to pick up on.  Some of the things I've seen and heard it do have amazed and baffled me... and I wrote the program!  I don't get how it does it sometimes but it does.  The forums here are littered with accounts.  I also know this, if everything is in order and running correctly... you'll max your connection out here.  TestMy.net is just a much harder test to ace but isn't that what a benchmark should be?

Well I don't know about there in Arizona. However, here in Las Vegas they are very strict. I broke my cap on the Premier plan (250GB) 2 months in a row and they blocked my account  until  I upgraded to the Ultimate plan! Now I am almost hitting that cap and they have told me if I go over it I will have to purchase 2 plans.

I Could not agree more. I am in Las Vegas and was forced into upgrading to Ultimate (150/20). I say forced because I had their Premier package (50/10) and was rather happy with my speed (even though my upload was on average only 4-5). However, we used like 300GB 2 months in a row and they shut down my account until I agreed to upgrade to the Ultimate plane with a 400GB cap.

My download speeds on here so far are only in the high 20's to low 30's. But my upload speeds I am not to sure on. They seem to be browser dependent and vary greatly. If I actually used  a browser to upload I would know to use Waterfox or Pale Moon. But seeing that I upload via FTP (FileZilla) and through live streaming I have no clue what my upload is. Here is the huge  variance  I get:

    33MB File Upload 2-13-2013     Maxthon 6:05 Am = 1.2 Mbps 148 kB/s
        Waterfox 6:09 Am = 14.7 Mbps 1.8 MB/s
        Firefox 6:20 Am = 15 Mbps 1.9 MB/s
        Pale Moon 6:22 Am = 14.1 Mbps 1.8 MB/s
        Chrome 6:23 Am = 4.7 Mbps 586 kB/s     IE 9 6:24 Am = 9.5 Mbps 1.2 MB/s
        Chrome 6:26 Am = 4.4 Mbps 556 kB/s     Pale Moon 6:27 Am = 14.1 Mbps 1.8 MB/s

What browser are you using?  Cox just upgraded my Ultimate to 150/20 too (It's only $99.99 here, it was 94.99 before the upgrade)... I'm still only getting 50 Mbps.  But I know my connection is on fire fast right now.  I download from Giganews I get 11.5 MB/s which is 92 Mbps.  ... to achieve that however I have to open 50 connections.  TestMy.net is not a multithreaded speed test.  And trust me... you don't need it to be.  I've regularly seen over 200 Mbps from thousands of miles out from the server.  When you test elsewhere they multithread the test, they also often test you automatically on a server that's too close to you to be a true test of your speed OUT to the Internet.  Your Internet isn't being served from within your city or state... why should you test it there? (my opinion but many agree).  It ends up making connections look better than they might actually be.  I've made this test to try to keep ISPs honest and consumers informed.

... I'm on the same package as you man.  I'm not seeing 150 Mbps either, anywhere... TestMy.net's results are just more pronounced than other tests out there........ that's because it's showing you that you AREN'T getting what they advertise.  Blatantly.  I'm seeing about half of the advertised upload.  Confirmed by uploading to various sites including YouTube... actually often got worse results than my upload speed tests here.  Don't get me wrong, the connection is fast... but it ain't no 150/20.  Cox is definitely the best game in town so I'm not going to complain about it either.  The competition in Phoenix in CenturyLink... who HAS to still be digging their asses out of the rats nest of twisted pair that US West left behind from before Qwest came in and tried to clean it up.  I opened one of their pedestals by mistake (when I was a cable tech)... I took one look at it and thought to myself, "F*$& THAT JOB!" ... seriously it looked like tens of thousands of twisted pair with no rhyme or reason, you definitely needed a toner to do that job.  And they're still running Internet through that crap, no wonder they can't get over 40Mbps still and half the people that want that are told, "Sorry, not in your area... we have 12 Mbps in your area."  BAH HA HA, it's 2013 and the competition has 150/20Mbps   ....... wait ... or do they.    -- even if Cox was only 40 Mbps it would STILL be better than DSL.  Unless it's fiber to the house DSL the latency on coax is far superior.  Way more stable connection in my experience.  DSL pissed me off, felt jittery in comparison.  Not nearly as smooth.  Plus D5L6UY doesn't have the same ring to it as CA3LE6UY.

Every other package I've upgraded to in the past has performed over what they state.  This time it didn't even feel like an upgrade (was 50/5 before), except when I multithread on Usenet or torrents.  I'm convinced that I'll never see that speed on a single file download... ever.  But other speed tests out there make it seem like it would get close... it won't.  And trust me it's not for lack of bandwidth on TestMy.net's end, the home server is a monster with 2000 Mbps of connectivity in what many consider to be Softlayer's most well connected datacenter... It's also not for lack of the test technology being able to do it, like I said before there are tons of people including myself who've seen well over 200 Mbps.  What is it then?  I think it's our host limiting us, shaping the way our bandwidth can be used.  It's called traffic shaping or packet shaping ... they're doing a form of bandwidth throttling.  This is the first time I've seen it first hand on my own connection and I haven't fully confirmed this with anyone from Cox, but I will.  I haven't worked for them for like 9 years but I still have good friends there that can give me the inside scoop on this if they know anything.  If I find anything I'll write something about and pin it (means it will stay at the top of the forum) in General Discussion.

this test can detect quite a few issues you won't see on flash or java based tests... this site can detect issues with incorrect settings MTU, RWIN, or browser settings... aswell as HDD issues. can also detect issues with ethernet cables, modems, routers and even issues that might be from your drop or even local node aswell as routing issues
it doesn't look like your having routing issues unless they are very centralized to your location

Thank you, I have been very impressed with this box - I wouldn't complain about anything because, frankly, I was shocked to see a browser via http over one pipe perform like this. Hopefully you are right and browsers will implement additional protocols for general use.
I think you are correct, everything is very symmetrical as far as the upstream/downstream xfer goes. I would imagine you need at least 7-10 seconds in order to measure the speed accurately when you account for the propogation delay, handshakes, etc. I imagine 33MB is generally plenty...most people don't check in with an unmetered gigibit device

You're welcome and I look forward to seeing what you are working on! I definitely will be one of your frequent visitors; this is by far the most realistic and accurate site I have found thus far for bandwidth tests. I can't stand speedtest.net, etc. with those silly .swf apps that look like a speedometer or whatever. Take care, talk with you soon . Zac

Wow, that's an awesome box you've got.  I'm glad that you didn't complain about not being able to max out that bad boy on TestMy.net... it's really hard to max 1Gbps on a single thread test with < 200MB test.  As I'm sure you've noticed, when you're at that level of speed you're pretty much only going to pull max speed if you multithread.  Even though I have 2000 Mbps on the other end.  With SCP transfer, a large file and perfect conditions you might get close.  But within the browser, at least right now it's hard to do.  Maybe browser limitations that will change in the future.

Where is the box located?  Are you doing VNC or something?  ... It's pretty crazy when you see that much data being transfered that quickly.  It took you only 6.5 seconds to download 185MB and 2 seconds to upload 33MB.... by the way, for your speed, my max upload file size is too small, I'd bet that your upload is in reality totally symmetrical with the download but when you burst the largest test in 2 seconds   ...you really need more time to get an accurate reading.  I'll be increasing that in the future.

Thank Zac.  I've been at it a long time... I've got much more in store.  I hope that you stick around to watch it develop.

CA3LE got a reaction from Pgoodwin1 in What happened to being able to test to a "West Coast" server?
So, I'll be starting another round on this. I've only worked about 16 hours or so on the mirrors so there are a number of changes to be made as well as additions. So please bear with me. I'm at the stage with this where it is hardly even starting to take shape, if I can just get 5% of my idea written it'll be heading in the right direction. Just realize, what you see today might be totally rebuilt tomorrow. My process takes time, I don't have a team of programmers... I have to write everything by hand. Over time mirrors will become better integrated and will work with all the same features as the regular speed test. Just give me a little time to put it together for you all.

Pgoodwin1, the doolgo server doesn't have to best routing everywhere. I tested up to 70 Mbps from some locations to there but I get terrible results there myself. It's capable, but your only as fast as your slowest link. The TestMy.net home server is still the benchmark, the additional servers give you something else to compare to. Having TMN code up on various VPS hosts can give people a way to benchmark VPS performance too. It's a great judge of web server performance, not just client end bandwidth. I'm working to build it to where you'll only need to drop a single file on the server for it to work. When I'm done, testing performance on any host will be as easy as checking your email. Upload a file, test... results.

Triran and mudmanc4 have a few servers they're putting up. As soon as I rebuild a few things I'll get those listed. Mudmanc4, I'll respond to your message in a bit... If you want to really help, hook me up with FTP or shell access like Triran did. Then, when updates become available, I'll push them automatically to your server so you don't have to think about anything.

CA3LE. I tried the new Doolgo server this morning. noticed a couple of things.

    1. When you hit the "Your Results" link at the top of your web page, the test results on the Doolgo server don't show up on the graph or the table. The immediate test result shows, but the graph and table you see immediately after the test is the host graph/table. Immediatelybafter the test completes, when I hit the button below the graph (Your Graph button), it sends me to the TestMy site data graph/table - which doesn't include the most recent Doolgo test run data.

Also, on an iPad, I can't scroll the table of test results on Doolgo after a test. It shows the most recent 4 results.

    2. My download test results are significantly slower - about 70-80% of what I get on the Central server. The Doolgo server has only 1/20th the bandwidth you have on the Dallas server. Not sure if that bandwidth is why the speeds are slower or whether it's something else in the path. I used a constant 25 MB test size, and did several runs, and the results seem consistent.

I couldn't figure out how to go back and see a personal record of test results on the Doolgo server.

I'll be redoing that soon, right now you can only choose that if you're selected on the default server.  It shows up on the download and upload test page.  After I rework it I'll make sure that there is a way to select that from the homepage too.

There should be some sort of static URL we can use to download a large file to do a speed-test from a command line, such as Ubuntu server.

For example, we should be able to use wget and go to a static file on whatever test server we prefer.

    (I.e.: dallas.testmy.net/static?size=5 which would download a 5MB file)

The test should request the bandwidth that the user expected. This doesn't have to be the bandwidth they were actually (legally) promised, but what they understood they would get. This could be provided once for the Auto Test, and after each individual test. A default value could be stored in a user account, but the user would have to press a big button to confirm it each time.  This would provide three possible types of values:
User Entered/Confirmed: xMbps Profile default: xMbps Last Entered/Confirmed: xMbps I think this extra data is very useful.
