New hard drive, slower speed.. what happened?
jontalk replied to jontalk's topic in Make it Faster...
Thanks, but I don't see any folder named: Cable & DSL 6000 768.ccs There are several folders and the one for cable is the one I opened.. There seem to be about four settings and I opened the first one, which is the fast 2K, or something like that.. I saved those changes to the registry already, so not sure where to go from there.. -
New hard drive, slower speed.. what happened?

Thanks.. any ideas on how I can tweak my connection some more? Before the crash, I consistently had much better readings.. The problem with Cablenut is that it doesn't give enough step by step for the novice.. JK -
The hard drive on my 16 mo. old P4 desktop failed a week or so ago, and I had a technician install a new one. Simultaneously, I was under the impression that my broadband provider (Comcast) increased the speed on the connection to 6 mb/384 kbps. I installed Cablenut again, but the speed seems off and inconsistent. Here's the today's speed test: :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 4085 Kbps about 4.1 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Download Speed is:: 499 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2) Test Time:: Mon Oct 10 08:25:56 PDT 2005 Bottom Line:: 73X faster than 56K

Thanks.. much appreciated.. do they make one that's a bit more affordable? I only use one port for periodic data exchange, as I do not have multiple PC's networked.. Just something simple as firewall protection (NAT).. Jonathan

I have been using a D-Link wired router model DI-704 and it appears something burned out on it, as it reduces my speed by about 80% when I run my broadband through it.. My computer guy says this is normal since it's running constantly and it's old. I guess I have to replace it now for firewall protection and am wondering which wired cable/dsl router is the best, as well as most economical. I use a wired router since my laptop and desktop have Goldmine Contact manager loaded on them and I do a data synch regularly. Front Range, developer of Goldmine, says synching with a wirless router can be c

Thanks.. so I presume I should leave the tweak settings where they are rather than change the one that Speedy Final mentioned?

It's supposed to be 3 mb down and 256 kbps up.. or something similar to that..

Sorry, but am having difficulty following your directions.. When I open the Adjuster, then go to File, the menu says "Open Custom Settings File". When I click there, the folder is "CCS" and when I click on this, the options are "Cable, DSL, etc".. Not sure where to go as when I go to the cable folder it has about 4 choices there.. What am I doing that's different from your instructions as it's not the same.. Thanks again..

OK.. thanks.. Here's the URL: http://ttester.broadbandreports.com/tweak/block:485845a?service=cable&speed=3200&os=win2k&via=normal It seems it's OK according to the test.. Let me know your thoughts..

Thanks.. of many of the things on the list, I have done these, except the Cablenut tweaks. I have not downloaded this program nor changed the settings. I am not a geek and am a little nervous about using this program especially if it causes any system problems. I run Win 2K on my Athlon 64 system with plenty of RAM etc.. I have used Crap Cleaner often, and have Ad Aware and Spyware Blaster too.. I just changed the NIC card settings to 100mb full duplex as stated, since I use a DLink router between the modem and nic card.. If you can assist with the Cablenut deal in order that I don't disrupt a

I'm brand new here and would like to see if I can increase my speed.. My system is an Athlon 64 running at 2.8 ghz, 512 mb RAM, with Win 2K. I have Comcast and use a D-Link hub as a firewall. Comcast just installed a new Terayon modem and it's plugged inot the D-Link, then into my NIC card. Here's the speed result tests: :::..
