  2. Another update: It's been almost a year since my last post, and I have just moved. EarthLink DSL was not going to be available at my new address (although it's only 2 miles from the old address), so I switched to Verizon FiOS... signed up for one of their Internet + phone bundles. I'm happy to report that the FiOS speeds are amazingly fast. Download speed has been as advertised, right around 15 Mbps. Uploads are supposed to be "up to 5" Mbps, and I'm getting between 3 and 4 Mbps so far. No complaints... compared to my DSL days, this is like night and day. If anyone out there has DSL or is considering it, and also has FiOS available in their area, I would highly recommend going with the FiOS. In case the price is an issue - I figure that I will actually be saving approx. $50 per month on Internet and phone (combined), because of the FiOS bundle I got thru Verizon. My only peeve is with Verizon's customer service; it is terrible.
  3. Update: It's five years later, still have the same pc and speeds are approx. the same (since I got the pc 5 yrs ago). Not bad. . Combined Test Results ..::: Download Connection:: 1603 Kbps or 1.6 Mbps Download Test Size:: 1.4 MB or 1434 kB or 1468006 bytes Download Speed:: 200 kB/s Upload Connection:: 334 Kbps or 0.3 Mbps Upload Test Size:: 265 kB or 265 kB or 271755 bytes Upload Speed:: 42 kB/s Tested At:: http://TestMy.net version:12 Test Time:: 2012-04-08 17:47:36 Local Time Validation:: https://testmy.net/db/V6uSjiZ.bRM2ieU User Agent:: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:12.0) Gecko/20100101 F
  4. Diablo321: That is interesting. Are you talking about cable or DSL? In my area if you want high-speed cable the only provider is roadrunner (time warner, formerly adelphia).
  5. DjVaGGo: I have Earthlink's "1.5 Mbps plan." Last year I had been told by an Earthlink customer service rep that my download speed would be around 800 to 1,400 Kbps, and the upload would be 256 Kbps. So, ever since getting my new pc, the speeds have been what they are supposed to be, or even slightly faster. No longer am disappointed...
  6. Here is an update, approx. 1 year later: I have a new, faster computer, and my speeds have been pretty much like the following results: <b>::.. 7. DJVangelis - Nope, it's not you... The Verizon name appears there because they are my telephone company; they ran the DSL circuit to the box outside my house. I wanted to get the 3/384 plan, but was told by EarthLink that it is not available for my address at this time....
  8. Hey, whattaya know.... I've gone over my maximum advertised speed (1.5 Mbps) for the very first time! I just had to share. :::.. 9. philp - Thanks for the info. It's reassuring to hear that I've been getting good speeds for EL's DSL. Wow, those are great speeds you're getting with their cable service. Yeah, you're right about their website needing to be updated with the proper speed info... Thanks again.
  10. tommie - Thanks for latest info. I am going to continue trying different tweaks & things to see if anything might help boost my speeds any more. I will check out that microsoft security/tools link... thanks again! M16 - Yes, I've been doing my speed tests in FF. Thanks for replying. Glad to see that your speeds are looking great, in FF and IE! - rand (remembers those cool Mustangs from the mid-to-late1960s...)
  11. Thank you all for your replies - you folks are the best! As for Earthlink's advertised speeds, I have their "1.5 Mbps plan" - of which they had advertised, "you can count on connections up to 70 times faster than dial-up." When I asked one of their customer service reps about the approximate download and upload speeds, he informed me that the download will be around 800 to 1,400 kbps, and upload will be 256 kbps. Do the "connection" figures in the testmy.net test results correspond to these stats, or is this like comparing apples and oranges? I downloaded CableNuts and TCP Optimizer and have been running various tests tonight. I must say that I started getting some better results after installing CableNuts... thank you very much for the suggestion, and for the links to other tips, tommie! Don't know if TCP Optimizer is helping much yet. My download speeds have dropped slightly after trying that, plus I've experienced a few web browser crashes. (could be a coinicidence of course.) I use Firefox and Opera, by the way... never have been a fan of IE. Upload speed is pretty much holding steady. For what it's worth, I didn't have an MTU figure before, and TCP Optimizer optimized it to 1,500. OK, so here are my fastest test results so far: :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 996 Kbps about 1 Mbps (tested with 1496 kB) Download Speed is:: 122 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (server1) Test Time:: Mon Feb 20 2006 21:08:58 GMT-0500 (Eastern Standard Time) Bottom Line:: 18X faster than 56K 1MB download in 8.39 sec Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 21.26 % of your hosts average (verizon.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-J4HOWYN1B :::.. Upload Stats ..::: Connection is:: 358 Kbps about 0.4 Mbps (tested with 1496 kB) Upload Speed is:: 44 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (server1) Test Time:: Mon Feb 20 2006 21:11:28 GMT-0500 (Eastern Standard Time) Bottom Line:: 6X faster than 56K 1MB upload in 23.27 sec Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 57.65 % of your hosts average (verizon.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-O4K0JQMT8 I'm wondering if my current speeds are actually in line with what the Earthlink rep said to expect? Maybe this is as good as it's going to get? It just seems that some sites are still hanging a bit too long... oh, well, I will definitely take this over dial-up! CableNuts may have given me the difference I needed. I am most grateful for the advice! Of course I am still open to any other ideas anyone might come up with... Thanks again! p.s. - Yes, computer is virus & spyware free.
  12. Hello - I just began using EarthLink DSL and so far am quite disappointed with the speeds I've been getting. I wasn't expecting blazing fast speeds because DSL hadn't been available in my area until recently, but I was surprised to see how slowly a lot of web pages were loading, etc. I had been an EarthLink dial-up customer for almost 9 years, and never had a problem with them - so I would prefer to try to stick with them. So glad to have found this site and forum, and am hoping that someone might have some ideas or suggestions for me. My test results are below. Thanks in advance for reading this and for anyone's help! :::..
