I am excited to be here and I want to share things with you all, I can't wait to get started!

First of all; I would like to share http://steamcommunity.com/id/zenleststehum/(did you know that Steam uses Akamai to publish images?)

Second of all; I like coffee (Very)

Third of all; I love to test and compare hardware/ISP's you name it I'm testing it! (Nice stuff)

    A question,

Does it matter if I change the server here https://testmy.net/mirrorFrom  Central US >> Dallas, TX USA to Europe >> London, GB I want to know what the best settings to test are!

Any general information to help me understand is greatly appreciated!

I've always used the Dallas server. (And I don't use multi-threaded either. ) Yeah, the D.C. server is probably closer to me, but I prefer having the large route. Gives me a better overall figure that way.

    Thanks,
    EBrown

You can test https sites with Mercury  -- right click a large image from the source you want to test, 'copy image url'... paste it in Mercury and test away.

Some of my favorite Mercury tests that I perform best on are https.  So it's not always slow.

e.g. lh4.googleusercontent.com (all of a sudden this one slowed down for me, to like 1/10 of normal - lol - usually a consistent performer), secure.netflix.com, lh3.googleusercontent.com

Since you mentioned this I made it so you can see the URI scheme when you hover.  That's useful information.

People in some countries will notice that they're automatically defaulted to servers closer to them than the Dallas server.  I still believe that there is more value in a test at distance, these servers are regional.  If you're very close to the server, say >10ms, you should definitely test out further to see what you're really getting. (EB I know that you know this, I'm explaining this for others. )

Considering you are located in the UK, I would recommend you use the London server. (Mostly because the large majority of .uk sites are located within the UK, so it represents the typical speed from you to them.)

Other than that, the choice really doesn't matter except to change what routing paths are used and such. If you manually decide to select the San Jose server, you will likely choose a significantly different route than if you were to select the Dallas server, or the Washington D.C. server.

    Thanks,
    EBrown

I test on both the Dallas server and the Washington DC server because where I'm located, they are similar distances from me. Plus they are east and south of me which covers a large area where I'd likely be routed for typical web surfing.

    Pgoodwin1 said it nicely.
With the same token, considering the data we access can and does pull from various locations globally. Therefore many times it is more than necessary to have the ability to test from / to multiple geographical locations to verify possible choke points in a network.

To gain insight as to your connection specific global weight, testmy.net has featured what it coins as 'multi' or multiple threaded tests, simultaneously pulling from as many as nine (9) specifically located test servers placed around the world, in some of the most highly connected fiber backbone sectors. With this, you are able to chose as little as one test point, with any combination of the nine, or select **all locations.

This type of testing is mimicking how the web browser performs in real time as you browse sites that, as most are, implementing code which pulls resources from as little as one to the possibility of unlimited global resources. Printing unparalleled real world results.

This test resource, located at multi geographical location testing has the ability to inform you as to not only how well your ISP is peering with local as well as geographical providers, but how the chosen path is performing on any specific resource.

** Dallas, TX US => testmy.net (shortcut: select by itself for auto mix)  Washington D.C. => east.testmy.net  Cloudflare (Global CDN) => cloud.testmy.net  San Jose, CA US => west.testmy.net  Google Pagespeed (Global CDN) => google.testmy.net  Dallas, TX US => dallas.testmy.net (DNS resolution for targeted selection)  London, GB => uk.testmy.net  Melbourne, AU => au.testmy.net  Hong Kong, CN => cn.testmy.net

stefzenon reacted to Johnster in Hello from a new Rogers Customer (for now anyway)
    Greetings all.

I just joined this site and am amazed at the differences between the speeds reported for my new 150MB Rogers connction here as opposed to the results I get on Speedtest.  Here it basically max's out at 40MB down, whereas on Speedtest (which Rogers recommends of course) it shows 150MB.  Rogers says they have never heard of this site, but my actual download speeds seem to be closer to the ones reported here than Speedtest.

Can anyone shine some light on this for me?  Similar experiences perhaps?

Thanks for any help that you can provide.

    Cheers
    John
