  1. Paying ISP $62/mo for “up to 400/20 Mbps” internet. Using testmy.net, recorded 5 minute samples for 16 hours (0000 to 1600 CST) on three days; Tuesday before Thanksgving, Thanksgiving Day, and Saturday after Thanksgiving. Test Setup: Modem: ARRIS DG2470A (ISP provided) Test PC: Dell Inspiron (64 bit Win 8.1, i5-3230M CPU, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB HD) Cable: New 1 foot, CAT6 cable between PC and modem; nothing else connected to modem ports, wireless not used Plotted TMN results in Excel. Results were similar each day (see graphs) Observations: Download speed was very erratic Peak samples all three days were ~244 Mbps (3 – 6 AM) Speed typically <100 Mbps before 3 AM and during day Upload speed not as erratic; either consistently good or consistently poor. Upload speed dropped so low at ~1230 Thanksgiving Day that test stopped; manually restarted ~1345 when I discovered test had stopped. Comment: At 1030 AM on 27 Nov, ISP tech on scene to check out service. OOKLA spot test said 418 Mbps; my PC spot test said 423 Mbps. No surprise there - GIGO. Questions: Is the short-term wide variation in DL speed typical? Is the longer-term wide variation in DL speed between middle-of-night and rest-of-time typical? (I’m not surprised that there is a difference between busy and not-so-busy time speeds, just surprised that variation is as great as what TMN recorded.) What can cause the UL speed to be consistently good and consistently poor (see 21 & 23 Nov graphs)? With normal setups in the real (consumer) world, would OOKLA speeds ever be realized? If not, it seems to me that the advertised/billed speeds would be fraudulent were it not for the weasel words “up to” Would any professional network engineer use OOKLA or accept its results? 21 Nov speedtest.pdf 23 Nov speedtest.pdf 25 Nov speedtest.pdf
  2. All is well now. Thanks to you all.
  3. Here is another screenshot of a successful single-shot, combined test. The first transmission in the Task Manager display occurred when I initiated the test. Minutes later, the second transmission occurred when the test was finally run. What caused the long delay?
  4. TMN one-shot, combined test fails to start. Have experienced this today on two computers (Dell Inspiron, i5 CPU, Win 8.1 and Gateway SX2801, 3 GHz Pentium, Win 7). In about 15 minutes, the attached screenshot is all that happened. Is the problem mine or yours? Note the very small, periodic transmissions of ~0.01% network utilization on the Task Manager display. My ISP speedtest says connection is 82 Mbps down and 19 Mbps up and CNET speedtest shows 52 Mbps down so I do have a network connection

Note that at 6:09:25 am, DL speed hit 256.83 Mbps so my equipment is capable of supporting at least that.
  6. Richard Aldridge in Paradise aka Corpus ChristiTexas. I've used TMN occasionally but never asked a question until now. 1. How do I post a question containing a TMN Results graph that I would like you to comment on? I tried to cut and paste; that just made a mess. Sorry, if there are guidelines on the site, I failed to find them. 2. When an ISP sells service described as “up to xxx Mbps”, does a customer have any reasonable expectation of typical or average speed or just have to accept whatever what is provided (Hobson's choice)? If car has an advertised 25 mpg highway but only gets that when coasting down a steep grade and gets only 5 mpg on the level, that would never be accepted. My internet service is that bad. 3. What information do you like to see in a question, i.e., ISP, purchased speed, modem, computer processor, OS, cable length and type between computer and modem, etc?

    Flash Site

Just found and joined this forum today. In reading some of the Q&A, I have seen "flash site" used. What is a flash site and what other kinds of sites are there? Really appreciate this forum.
