  5. Pro w/ Dynamic IP. I would be happy spending the extra 10 bucks for the upload speed if the downloads stayed up. The 6000 was never that slow during peak. 5:30 is wake up time for me. I wonder how it will be then.

    :::.. Download Stats ..:::

    Connection is:: 127 Kbps about 0.1 Mbps (tested with 1496 kB)

  6. Well... I did some stuff after reading some posts. Download still stinks. ~ 200 Kbps.

    Don't feel like waiting for the tests. 6000 didn't drop that far in the evenings. It is OK for browsing I suppose.

    Upload is great. I forced ranging about 4 times in a row and the speed is nice and steady now.

    Here is my last upload test:

    :::.. Upload Stats ..:::

    Connection is:: 163 Kbps about 0.2 Mbps (tested with 1013 kB)

    Upload Speed is:: 20 kB/s

    And that is a poor one. Most of them have been running in the 180 range.

    I read somewhere that there is some issues on Sat Mex 5 (me), but nothing concrete. Any info?

  7. Well I am THRILLED that my DW7000 upgrade came today... (NOT)

    This upload isn't bad, but sure isn't what others are seeing. I NEVER got this bad with the 6000. It better get better because I dread calling Dway support...

    Any suggestions?

  8. I agree.

    I don't know a single DWAY customer that wouldn't instantly bail out for cable or DSL the second it became available. All of us are stuck in the sticks and that is the only alternative. (No, Starband is not an alternative. A friend of mine has it and he is worse off than us!!)

  9. Dway spy???

    I don't know about Comcast,  but my relatives who live in civilization have RoadRunner, and it is always over 3000k down and around 500K up. If I ever get it here, I will drive over my Dway dish with a bulldozer and send it back to them in a box in pieces!

  10. You'll never see it.

    I have tweaked to the max, everything I have read. Max down ever is 1006 and up is around 98.

    It is pretty well established that the download is capped at 1000. It even quietly states that on one of DWAY's pages. (I think for a business account) "Downloads up to 1.0 Mbps!!" or words to that effect.

  11. I leave mine on all the time. I end up resetting it every week or so. Usually the only trouble I have is with secure sites. When that happens, you can't browse at all without the proxy enabled (so ftp and everything else fails to0).

    I use the Reset6000 program that is found on DSLReports to reset remotely rather than unplugging it.

  12. :::.. Upload Stats ..:::

    That's the largest file we have..Upload speeeds are getting better. At peak usage time tonight my upload speed almost exceeded my download speed.  :D

    Wow... I would give my left *** for upload like that. What the hell?

  13. As far as upload goes with a 6000, this is about as fast as I have ever been...

    :::.. Download Stats ..:::

    Connection is:: 1004 Kbps about 1 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB)

    Download Speed is:: 123 kB/s

    Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/

    Test Time:: Mon Apr 11 06:27:38 EDT 2005

    Bottom Line:: 18X faster than 56K 1MB download in 8.33 sec

    Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 27.41 % faster than the average for host (direcpc.com)

    Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-A3GF86UWP

    And this is fairly average for upload. I don't do upload tests too often because it is too depressing. Upload speeds and latency are my only real bitches with DWAY right now. Download and surfing has been for quite a while. Secure sites are sometimes trouble, but a reset of the modem usually fixes that.

    :::.. Upload Stats ..:::

    Upload Speed is:: 8 kB/s

    Virtual Private Networking (VPN) overview and FAQs

    Solution

    What is VPN?

    A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a secure data tunnel between two computers over public networks like the internet. A VPN is created by special software that authenticates users, establishes a temporary connection between two computers, and encrypt data on one side while decrypting it on the other. This process creates a secure conduit between the two computers and allows them to pass data back and forth privately even over public resources.

    Does VPN work with DIRECWAY?

    Yes, but DIRECWAY works better with some VPN solutions than others. V-One, for example, has provided satisfactory results for some DIRECWAY customers. However, there are alternatives to client/server VPNs which allow high speeds over DIRECWAY, such as a DIRECWAY private network (whether it's a dedicated backhaul or router-to-router VPN). Often alternatives such as web-enabled mail servers, file servers, etc. encrypted with SSL are an even a better way to do the same thing for which customers might have used a VPN while allowing high speeds over DIRECWAY. Most VPNs require a static, routable public IP address; this is available with DIRECWAY Business Edition; see http://be.direcway.com/ for details.

    How will a VPN client affect my DIRECWAY Performance?

    A VPN clients performance on an FTP download will vary, but typical rates can vary from approx. 1/8 to of the standard DIRECWAY speeds. The majority of client/server VPN connections cannot take advantage DIRECWAY performance-enhancing technologies because packets are tunneled by the VPN application from end to end. One exception is V-One SmartGate, which is compatible with DIRECWAYs acceleration technology and thus can offer increased performance. Typically, all applications that work without a VPN client will work with a VPN client, however often with some decrease in speed.

    Have VPN solutions been tested with DIRECWAY?

    The following VPN clients have been tested with the Hughes Model DW4000 (DIRECWAY two-way terminal):

        Note:  Only the versions below have been tested with DIRECWAY DW4000. Any additional versions/software titles will require further testing.

    Microsoft Windows VPN (PPTP)

    Cisco VPN CVPN-CLNT-30-K9

    Nortel Extranet Access Client.V02_62.33

    CheckPoint VPN-1 SecuRemote 4.1

    V-One SmartGate (does not require Static IP)

    AT&T Netclient v5.03 (AT&T proprietary software)

    Does Hughes Network Systems provide technical support to VPN customers?

    No. HNS does not provide any technical support for setup or troubleshooting for any VPN products. Support for these applications should be acquired from the respective vendor.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Q:  Are there any parameters that I can tune to speed up my client/server VPN service?

    A:  There is usually nothing that you can tune to speed up the service using a VPN client/server application. Some VPN client installations change the RWIN value of the Microsoft TCP/IP stack. DIRECWAY requires that the RWIN value remain at 200,000.

    Q: Can I use a client/server VPN to access my network drives on my corporate network?

    A: The inherent latency in satellite networks makes disk sharing difficult but not impossible. Each type of network would have to be evaluated and tuned by the enterprise user to work over the DIRECWAY network.

    Q: Can I contact HNS for support and or troubleshooting the VPN Client software?

    A: No. Support should be offered by the VPN Client software.

    Q: Where can I purchase DIRECWAY Business Edition?

    A: DIRECWAY Business Edition can be purchased via the network of Value Added Resellers or from Hughes Network Systems directly for large enterprise applications. See the Business Edition page at http://be.direcway.com/ for details. The Value Added Resellers provide local sales support, installation, and personalized attention to your DIRECWAY services.

    Q: Can I use a client/server VPN to access my email on my corporate network?

    A: Most enterprise email solutions such as Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange have several ways for remote users to access their email. The most popular are direct server/database access, Web based email, synchronized mail, and POP3/ SMTP mail. Synchronized mail, POP3 and Web based mail work reasonably well over a VPN connection. On the other hand, directly accessing the database or server with the email client either may not work at all or performance is severely limited.

    Q: Can I share my DIRECWAY connection with other computers on a home LAN (e.g. with Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing) and have them connect to my corporate network through a VPN?

    A: In most cases, the answer is yes. The VPN client should be installed on the computer that also has the DIRECWAY software. Once the VPN connection is established from the DIRECWAY computer, the computers on the LAN can then share the connection.

    Q: My DIRECWAY system shows an error message that TCP/IP is not correctly bound to the Satellite Adapter every time I start the Navigator.

    A: The DIRECWAY client performs essential startup diagnostics when Navigator starts. The installation of some VPN clients (for example Checkpoint) interferes with these diagnostic checks. These diagnostics include such things as: verifying the TCP/IP stack is installed, properly configured, only one adapter is installed and the adapter is responding to simple commands, etc. If you are experiencing problems with one particular VPN client, try using a different client.

  15. Regarding tech support...

    I NEVER call unless the thing is out for more than several hours and I am sure it is not me. Then when you do call, you either get their stupid f*&%ing recording admitting that they suck and to call back when they don't (which is never) or you get a support guy who is driving a cab in NYC with one hand and talking on his tech support cell phone on the other. (Or maybe he is at the counter at 7-11)

  16. Did you find documentation on acceptable ping times for PS2 or Xbox?

    If 800 is the limit for acceptable gaming, you are going to be teetering on the edge all the time with Dway. For me, ping times faster than 600 or so are rare, and are usually around the high 700's.

    I have an Xbox, and would love to try Xbox live, but don't dare. I will just get madder at Dway!

    If I only had a choice. (Win the lottery and get a T from AT&T maybe) ;-)

  17. I very rarely see any fluctuation in download speeds. Almost always 980 or above.

    Upload fluctuates much more... anywhere from 40 - 90

  20. This is a known downside to DirecWay all together.

    Secure http traffic doesn not go through their proxy servers for security reasons. They use caching proxy servers. (Turbo Page Acceleration) Caching proxies store commonly viewed web pages on their servers for faster delivery to you. If they cached secure site data, your data would then be there too.

    The interesting question that I have never gotten a good answer to is why it is SO slow. In theory, those sites should load about as quickly as a page that has never been through the proxy. (A new web page, perhaps)

    I have never run any kind of test on secure site speeds (someone should build an https test site), but I believe my performance on https sites is still significantly faster than dial-up.

    Here is DirecWay's answer right off the MyDirecWay site:

    The secure web sites use HTTPS protocol while most other web sites use HTTP protocol. DirecWay Turbo Page acceleration is designed to work with HTTP protocol only. As such, access to secure web sites is not as fast as to other web sites.

  21. I beleive that the only true way to improve your results on the cross pol test is to have your installer :-)  adjust your dish.

    Up/Down and Right/Left should not effect it. The rotation does. Someone with more experience on this tell me if I am right.

    I got my dish tweaked as far as I could peak signal and cross pol. Of course, according to FCC rules, I had my "installer" do it for me!!!
