  1. Not to argue (well, discuss is more like it) but you said it yourself, they do have some control, to a degree. If you go across multiple backbones to get to a server, and there are issues between the 2nd and 3rd (like I have going from Tulsa to Cali), then there is little your ISP can help with that. They can control who they connect to, but not much after that. One single ISP can not control the routing for the whole network. In some cases every ISP in your local area take the same path at some point to a server. Even though they may have their own backbone, those backbones connect to a regional NSP then get routed the same. In my case here in Tulsa I know to avoid servers in Cali due to a backbone between me and them having load issues, one of the main reasons I always use testmy for speed tests at a distance. Even when I lived in Las Vegas, Cali was always a problem. Granted, I use the same ISP, but the trace's are much different (in Las Vegas I saw the issues with Big Iron, here in Tulsa its usually alter.net or xo.net that I see the lag jump).  Now if you have issues with an ISP across teh board, then yeah its time to switch ISPs. But if its just localized to one area, and especially if its after multiple backbones, then I would say its pretty much out of your ISP's hands.

i've experienced what your talking about aswell but generally it gets fixed with a week or month if its not getting fixed then someone isn't doing their job

  2. I really need some info if anyone can help. We had our modem, my computer, and a cable box plus the new tv that was hooked into it get fried by lightening saturday night. When we looked at the cable line the next day it turns out it was not grounded in anyway at all. We never work on anything to do with the cable outside of our house. The cable company are the only people who have run lines from the pole to our house. Is the cable company responsible for grounding the cable line? The cable guy came to the house while I was not there and only my mother was there. When he saw that the line was not grounded he said that he was going to write on his work order that it was grounded when he got there so that we wouldn't be charged a 300 dollar fee. I have never heard such a thing. To me it sounds like he was trying to cover the cable companies butt. What do you guys think?

i have never heard of anything like that before, i would imagine that its their responsibility to make sure the lines are ran properly that includes grounding... it seems very odd that they would not ground it

  3. Well I'm about to give up. Just had it happen again and had to reset the modem. I checked and it turns out that our home phone stops working as well when this happens so it must be something with the modem. Gonna ask for a different modem, and maybe cancel our home phone service so I can get just a regular DOCSIS 3.0 modem. Don't really see the need for a home phone anymore.

thats exactly how i have my cable setup... home phones are really out dated and not really needed anymore unless you have some sort of a home business or need to fax a lot of things

  4. Automatic routing is using a cdn to send the data meaning you could be routed to any one of cloud flares 23 data centers depending on which is closest to you as for the Dallas server not working C@BLE will probably have to answer that one cause I'm not entirely sure what changes he's made lately I just know they were extensive with the cdn addition

  5. I bought the Motorola 3360 modem today at Walmart. Would only work connected direct to my computer... not through my router & switch.

As it turned out they have this modem set to the same network address as the Lynksys. With the help of a friend we changed the settings in the modem so that the router could use PPOE... same as I had been doing with the old Speedstream... and then it all worked.

My download speeds have been testing anywhere from 1.91mbps to 2.3mbps. Have the tester running for 20 hours so hope it might improve in the next day or so.

Anyway, much improved over what I was getting prior so I'm pleased. If it holds like this fine. I can live with it.

very good! sometimes a new modem can be just what the doctor ordered... it has fixed internet problems with my connection more then once

  6. That would not solve the issue, and would essentially give you a single average number that is better left as a set of numbers for more information regarding routing.

There are two speed graphs that I think are most important for an internet connection: a graph of speed tests to an internal server (within the ISPs network) to determine the average and variance during the day/week/year/millennium of your connection to your ISP; and a graph of speed tests to a server outside the ISPs network, to find out how good your ISP is at handling that. Latency tests can also be very useful.

You are right in that a single server can be hampered by a single bad network, but it does point to a problem that is not supposed to exist, and will affect many more servers which you want to interact with.

    very well put RTB

  7. If 30Mbps is the boost your supposed to be getting then no you wouldn't see that on the test because the tests are setup to run a bit longer then that lasts to get a stable real world reading of your connection if you want to test and see it you can specifically choose a very small download size say 6-12MB and you might see it then

  8. What your getting is the typical run around that isps give when you have any issues its simply easier to point the finger at anyone or anything else. Don't let up. Your the customer just keep insisting something isn't right with your service because after all your the one paying

  9. I don't think you're whining at all. Simply voicing your opinion, That's a big fail on Microsoft's part. Sounds like too big of a change. If users had the option to use the classic look then they could make the transition easier for users.

I think it's pretty cool that the Windows 8 upgrade is only $39.99. Much more in line with what the price of an upgrade should be. They obviously learned that price point from Apple. Although OSX Mountain Lion upgrade 10.8.2 is only $19.99 ... IMO MS should price it at $19.99 ... Also cool that the upgrade price can be used from Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7. OSX upgrade requires that you're running 10.6.8 or greater so you have to incrementally upgrade which in the end costs more.

I personally run all Apple and Linux. I have virtual machines of pretty much every operating system but only use them for development purposes. OSX makes me much more efficient, I'm glad I left the PC world and got real computers. --- TMN has always run on linux. You really can't beat linux for website hosting.

agreed, linux can not be beat for stability thats why most major sites out there are run on it

The only thing Keeping me from getting away from windows is I am such a big pc gamer. Oh Did find out what the deal was with People not stealing Windows 8.

I guess it is impossible to install offline, While it is installed, it phones home to Microsoft. I myself have not played with dodgy copies of Windows since Windows XP. All my copies of Windows 7 is legit.

While the upgrade is cheep, No thanks. Now if they learn there lesson, and go back to the classic desktop, Windows 9 may be a option. If not, Windows 7 Stays.

As far as my Gaming, I simply am NOT a fan of Consoles, not sure why, just not my thing.

Did find out some really useful information. There already ways to make windows 8 into a windows 7 clone. Can be done for free. Its called "classic Shell" http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/

Windows 7 Support will not end til 2020. You will still get all the security updates. 2015 they stop offering driver updates for windows 7 through "windows update" Which is a easy work around by using "driver Pack solution" which is free, and I have used it, Works great. Simply scans your computer and lets you update drivers as needed.

same here i run linux and windows because games on linux just don't work to well

i always manage my driver updates myself its not really rocket science, if it aint broke don't fix it

  10. It's safe to say that x16 gen2 isn't fully utilized yet either.

Depends on the game and your CPU power. One 7970 is going to be overkill for 99% of all games out there, with exceptions being stuff like Metro 2033 and extreme battles in Starcraft 2 (CPU limitation).

Averaging over many games, they're about equal. Nvidia gets CUDA and physx, because it owns both sadly.

Custom water cooling is going to provide better temperatures at a much higher cost and maintenance. Then there are the closed-loop systems like the H100, which tend to be just a bit better than top-end air cooling. The advantage of such systems is that you don't have a huge block of aluminium/copper hanging on your motherboard.

At this point, 8GB is downright affordable, so for a high-end system the goal is now 16GB (2x8) or even 32GB (4x8).

It'll be overkill if you don't overclock your CPU to 4.5+Ghz.

The only time that wouldn't be overkill would be OC'd CPU + OC'd crossfire 79070s.

Sounds like you wouldn't have much use for an expensive high-end rig, it would be better to save the money.

That's just the official maximum. You can run the RAM at 1866 speed, but you'll probably have to set it manually in the BIOS.

RTB the memory thing really depends on what socket he buys, with 2011 socket he'll want to run quad channel memory so he'll need 4 sticks at least with the 1155 i believe its only dual channel? so 2 should work fine
