is your network adapter set at half duplex 10Mbps max? go to control panel > network and sharing center > change adapter settings > right click your local area connection and hit properties > configure > advanced > speed or speed and duplex or duplex mode ( make sure its set to at least 100Mbit ) also in tcp optimizer make sure your MTU is set at 1500 thats is very importent

I had to set up a massive growing [cannot name it] forum with dual databases a couple years ago, really made a difference. They have last time i checked over 90k members with nearly 6 million posts, at around 10k active members, and at any given time of the day roughly 2-3 thousand members on at a time. Thats the only thing that saved the place at the time. Not sure what there doing now I have nothing to do with it.
As far as this project, I'm experimenting with using sockets 'SOCKS' or chrooting the sql server, which I'm finding is no trivial task in VPS considering it needs to find all it's resources within the jail. So just creating it's own directory and cramming it in there is not going to work as securely as setting it up within it's own volume will.
you might be able to get your VPS provider to make a seperate partition for you so you can do something like that
and yeah if any of my sites ever get that big i will have no problem adding more servers i'm close to just getting my own dedicated right now but i just don't have the justification so until then i will just keep throwing more VPS's at it the american way right?
during my last big night of clients the servers didn't really break a sweat with all the concurrent users it had mysql was less then 2% cpu used running at about 8MB/s, apache was using very little cpu but about 1GB of ram nginx was using very little ram but about 30% cpu
my mysql server is the only server i currently have on a gigabit port besides the windows server but the windows server isn't even live yet the project is still under heavy development

Be patient with me, its been 3 years since I have had a solid connection, and before that it was only 6 meg DSL..
Just activated my 30/6 Comcast, which after a power cycle is averaging 23 down, 4 up. However, here on testmy I am only getting 4-8 down.
I know my connection to testmy.net shouldn't bother me, but it does..
Using a RCA by thomson DCM425, no router currently. Just ran TCP optimizer on my windows 7 installation. Same results using chrome and IE.
No changeable settings with this modem.
Using my onboard chipset, drivers up to date.
Comcasts speedtest, downloading from different websites all give me about 23 down.
Pings are averaging 30ms to most sites, testmy is averaging 60-80.

Any tips? I'm pretty happy with 23/4, but who doesn't want to squeeze everything they can from they're connection
could be as simple as a problem with the route between you and the dallas server try testing from http://dc.testmy.net if your on the east coastish or http://west.testmy.net if your on the westcoastish if you are located in central US the default dallas server should be your server of choice but go ahead and try the others honestly i get near perfect results from all 3 servers even though one is 1500+ miles away from me

Indeed the mysql server can't support that I was more referring to my httpd servers I'm running nginx reverse proxy to Apache worker I've tested up to 3k concurrent with only one Web server running and mysql only used 14 threads at 129 connections I don't use keep alive on Apache since it is handling only dynamic content I think the reason I'm able to hit that during the tests is because it's fake traffic hitting cached material same for the mysql connections its mostly hitting cache I recently added the 2nd httpd server in the round robin setup and haven't really had time to test it so my numbers weren't exactly fact just guessing I'm sure my mysql server will be the bottleneck but that can be sorted by replication to a read only mysql server so that one handles reads the other does writes

I'm at the point of {way too far in depth} concerning RSA / DSA ssh keys.
Since DSA is faster at generation , but slower validating, and RSA is really no longer the industry standard, other then USB cards ect. I did say industry standards , not what people are still using lol
There's quite a bit of variable in any way this is done, considering this is for database security, speed as well as security are concerns. As well as staying , as much as possible PCI compliant.
in my current setup i run my DB server on quite a bit more hardware then that
i'm currently running 4 servers
2 load balanced round robin web servers one hosts httpd/ftpd/dns the other one is rsync'd running only httpd both running quad core 3.5GHz cpu's with 2 GB of ram
1 Mysql, Mail, DNS server with a quad core 2.4GHz cpu 2 GB of ram but much higher guaranteed IO then the httpd
and 1 windows server running IIS7.5 to host a webservice for a project being hosted under mod_mono on the linux servers its a quad core 2.4GHz with 1GB of ram
as far as performance the current setup has handled about 1000 concurrent users but has about 6000 concurrent user capacity
i'd really like to tunnel the SQL but it will bite if it hinders the performance i'm currently getting

Actually testmy.net is telling you there is an issue somewhere along the testing route. Which is the very reason for it's being.
Running traceroutes can tell us where the lagging router is, checking peer availability , congestion and availability is another.
There was a time where this was not an issue , yet with the recent national routing changes, specific cross continental advertising and video streaming services, not to mention the latest knowledge of the Utah datacenter for national security , and it's special routing procedures , have caused a few peering issues that the ISP cannot and does not have any say in.
For instance , I can test to testmy.net dallas from silicon valley area ( Cupertino ) like it's within my ISP's internal network, but testing from NW Ohio , renders drastically different results. This is not a flaw, this is valuable information.
You can get information on the status of various peers if you so choose here , I use these tools regularly.
Have a look at the image below to understand main routing
boy that was a good read! you got me started on a google spree and i just couldn't stop.
4 hours after clicking your links i finally realized what time it was
thanks ~ Mark

if it is a routing issue its nothing testmy.net can fix nor is it a problem that testmy.net has it's the peers job to fix the issues whatever they may be infact it could be TWC that has the problem there is just no way to know... testmy.net does have multiple servers in multiple markets to test
Damon has a server on each coast aswell as one centrally located so you should be able to test from at least one
try one of those and let us know

nah hes on here on his backup connection (dial up) it really sounds like a DNS issue with his Xplornet service

Happy Birthday!!

whats your advertised speed and around what speeds are you seeing? i'm not seeing any tests from you, you should run some tests so we can further assist you
-
Aside from making sure the signal levels your receiving are at the appropriate place the only other thing you can do is keep complaining to them it is most likely an issue with their peering and they most likely already know about it I would keep complaining it could be something as simple as a bad amplifier on your node it can't hurt to complain right?
-
btw the pause is probably skewing your test results having no data transfer for those two seconds is probably bringing your result way down
-
Document what you do because I'm very interested in this infact I already have mysql hosted remotely but it is not tunneled id like to set one up aswell

i recent'y has to commit a cardinal sin and buy a windows VPS to host an API for a project i'm hosting it is only going to have IIS running for the AP since entity framework in mono isn't supported yet
-
i've only ever used godaddy to register my domains so i can't really comment on who the best is.
as i started out i was using a friends company for web hosting then i realized what control i could have over the website if i hosted it myself so i began to host my own
i've used quite a few VPS providers but am currently using ChicagoVPS they have been really solid and their machines are extremely fast and offer free backup
-
If you don't remember you can either call your provider and ask or check on your bill. On your bill it may only say the name of the package, go to your providers website and check on their internet sales page... you should be able to find the speeds listed with the names of the packages.
^ what he said btw welcome to testmy.net!

No problem the only reason I asked is because I run mod_mono in Apache on one of my production machines and I've seen errors like that before that is definitely an asp error that you would only see if mod_mono or mod_asp were being called its really strange in the vbulletin structure are there any dlls or asp pages or is there any. Htaccess files that could be trying to do something with asp?
-
you running mod_asp or mono?
-
Short GI or long? Also do you have the wireless protection enabled? I only ask because I own a dir 655 and I know it has options to disable those features which typically improve throughput
-
i was reading this at work and thought the same thing very good and useful idea!
-
On your router make sure mtu is 1500 and disable multi casting also make sure the network speed is set to auto and not to half duplex 10Mbit have you tried testing from a different pc on your lan?
-
thanks TriRan. The 192.168.100.1 page brought up a multiple button select tool for the modem and included a modem reset button.
No problem man glad I could help

OK...everyone will think I am crazy but I have tried another dual band router.
This one is a Belkin N750 DB.
It's the same thing. Everything works well but testmy.net speed test are really low again.
Does it take a while for settings to "settle in" and the modem and router to interact well?
I just don't think 3 brand new routers would all be bad or configured wrong etc.
This Belkin has a built in speed test and it shows really great.
I'm perplexed. Not to mention flummoxed!
All the new routers are actually rated "faster" than the D Link I have had for a year or so that I was getting good speed here.
okay i'm not sure if this question has been answered before but are you testing over the wifi feature?

I use Google or level3 dns servers
Comcast 30/6

yeah powerboost is very misleading cox advertises the same thing xxx.xx speed with powerboost in fine fine print
