  1. I have a HP PSC 2355 All-in-one Printer/Copier/Scanner.  I downloaded a software upgrade from HP and now I can't scan anymore.  All I get when I try is an error message indicating a communication error!  I know my printer is a Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) type, but I still can't get it to work.  I have done everything I can think of.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

  2. I parsed your Hijackthis date and it didn't see anything in red.  Anywasy, I would download, Spybot Search and Destroy and run scan.  Also, download CCleaner and remove all temp files and do reg scan.  Further, when was the last time you defragged your system?  Are you behind a router?  When was the last time you updated your NIC driver?

    Running processes:

    C:WINDOWSSystem32smss.exe

    Smss.exe

    What is it?

    Session Manager SubSystem - smss.exe

    What does it do?

smss.exe - This is the session manager subsystem, which is responsible for starting the user session. This process is initiated by the system thread and is responsible for various activities, including launching the Winlogon and Win32 (Csrss.exe) processes and setting system variables. After it has launched these processes, it waits for either Winlogon or Csrss to end. If this happens "normally," the system shuts down; if it happens unexpectedly, Smss.exe causes the system to stop responding (hang).

    Additional Reading:

Smss.exe does not resolve forward references in environment

You will not be able to end this through task manager!

    What is it?

    Windows Logon Process - Winlogon.exe

    What does it do?

    Direct Quote from here:

This is the process responsible for managing user logon and logoff. Moreover, Winlogon is active only when the user presses CTRL+ALT+DEL, at which point it shows the security dialog box.

    Virus Precaution:

The original Winlogon.exe from Microsoft gets placed in the C:WINDOWSSystem32 directory. if you find it anywhere else then you should be suspicious for sure.

    C:WINDOWSsystem32services.exe

    services.exe

services.exe is a part of Windows that manages the processes. Anytime a service starts or stops it is through services.exe. During system startup and shutdown is when this process sees most of its action. You should never end this process unless it is running outside of your windows system folder.

    C:WINDOWSsystem32lsass.exe

    lsass.exe

    What is it?

Local Security Authentication Server - lsass.exe

    What does it do?

lsass.exe - It generates the process responsible for authenticating users for the Winlogon service. This process is performed by using authentication packages such as the default Msgina.dll. If authentication is successful, Lsass generates the user's access token, which is used to launch the initial shell. Other processes that the user initiates inherit this token.

You will not be able to end this through task manager!

    C:WINDOWSsystem32Ati2evxx.exe

    ati2evxx.exe

    What is it?

ATI External Event Utility EXE Module AKA ATI Hotkey Poller - ati2evxx.exe

    What does it do?

ati2evxx.exe - This process provides optional features that the majority of us really couldn't care less about. The XT's overdrive feature uses this. If you have an XT you'll probably want to leave this on.

This is installed as a service so you'll need to do the following to disable:

    Start --> Run --> services.msc

Find ATI Hotkey Poller and double click it.

Change the startup type to disabled

According to ATI this process is supposed to have 2 instances running. ( link )

The best explanation I've managed to find for this is: (Source)

We have to have the 2 instances to support multisession (fast user switch) support. A system service does not have access to change per user settings on a any session other than the default session. In fast user switch, multiple sessions get created. To be able to change the settings on non-default session we need to create a per user instance of the external event.

Many users have reported this process to slow their boot time down.

    Virus Precaution:

The original ati2evxx.exe from ATI gets placed at C:WINDOWSSystem32ati2evxx.exe . If you find it anywhere else then you should be suspicious for sure.

    C:WINDOWSsystem32svchost.exe

    Svchost.exe

    What is it?

    Service Host Process - svchost.exe

    What does it do?

Here's a direct quote from MS about this: (source)

Svchost.exe is a generic host process name for services that are run from dynamic-link libraries (DLLs). The Svchost.exe file is located in the %SystemRoot%System32 folder. At startup, Svchost.exe checks the services portion of the registry to construct a list of services that it needs to load. There can be multiple instances of Svchost.exe running at the same time. Each Svchost.exe session can contain a grouping of services, so that separate services can be run depending on how and where Svchost.exe is started. This allows for better control and debugging.

Svchost.exe groups are identified in the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionSvchost

Each value under this key represents a separate Svchost group and is displayed as a separate instance when you are viewing active processes. Each value is a REG_MULTI_SZ value and contains the services that run under that Svchost group. Each Svchost group can contain one or more service_names extracted from the following registry key, whose Parameters key contains a ServiceDLL value:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesService

If you're running Windows XP Home edition then you'll have to download this file HERE and put it in your windows/system32 directory. If you're running XP Pro then you won't need that file since you already have it.

  3. I believe the term, "Relative", has been taken out of context for too long.  I think, of course you can correct me if I am wrong (I often am), but what is absolute and reliable despite the apparent confusions, illusions, and contradictions produced by RELATIVE motions or the actions of gravity; relatively only serves to remind us that the, "Observer", is an unavoidable a participant in the system under study.

In fact, Einstein never said all things are relative.  In fact he thought, "Relativity", was a very bad name for his theory and thought about calling it the, "Invariance Theory", instead.

  4. You do know that by going wireless you loss about 50% of your bandwidth.  How new is your unit, just because you purchase it yesterday doesn't mean your NIC drivers are out of date.  Whenever I purchase anything new like graphics card the first thing I do is look for new drivers.

Anyway, before you can download hyperwrt firmware to increase your transmit power you really need to know what version of router you have.  Try looking on the bottom of the unit.  What Vanburen ccs file are you currently using to improve your TCP/IP connection?

Further, once I know your version number I will send a link to the firmware that is best for your unit.  Also, do you know the Linksys version of Firmware you are currently using?

    Thanks,

    compuworm

  5. I have a few questions:

    Who is your ISP

What is your advertised up/dw speeds

Are you using any tweaks now like Vanburen's cablenut files

What about firmware are you using a Hyperwrt or linksys firmware:

When is the last time you updated your NIC drivers

    Thanks,

    compuworm

  6. Do you know how to open your routers web page?  Its usually 192.168.1.1 then type in, "admin" if you haven't set up a user name and password.  Further, you have to set up static ip addresses on your xbox and your main computer>

    For Main Computer:

right click My Computer>click Properties>Click on General tap of the Local Area Connection Window> Scroll down and select (highlight), "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" > Next click on the "Properties" button and this will open the  Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window>click the Radio button that states, " Use the Following IP Address" now put in the following information:

IP Address 192.168.1.XX (use XX to be between 10 and 99)

Subnet Mask: should fill in automatically or use 255.255.255.0

    Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1

For: Perferred DNS server use what is listed on your router's web page.

Once open click on the, Status tab and under, "Internet-configuration and type", look for DNS 1 and DNS 2 these are the values to inputed into your perferred DNS server and alternate DNS server back in the,  "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties", window.

Once this is done click,OK button and close.

    For XBox,

I will assume you know how to give your xbox a static ip just read directions.  Further make your you use the same DNS values you used in the, "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties", window.

Now once again open your router's web page and go to the, "Application and Gaming", Tab.  Now click the radio button that says, "Enable DMZ" and input the ip address last digits you selected as the ip address you used back in the, "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties", window.  Once done click save settings and reboot system.

I don't usually recommend using  DMZ which opens all ports and makes your system more vulnerable to outside attack but all we are trying to see is if port forwarding works.  You can easily just turn it off.

    I hope this helps,

    compuworm

P.S. Try giving your xbox a ip address that is close to the ip address used for your main computer.  Do not go over an ip address ending in 100 or above.

  7. Sorry for the late reply, yes, I have wired and wireless.  Of course though the wired units get better speeds.  I have done quite abet of tweaking and I believe I have gotten the best speeds possible.  I go with Comcast and I get 6000/384, but with tweaking I get 7000 up. I go with MAC filtering already as my neighboor was using my wireless signal.

One thing I can suggest too speed up your system a little faster is to reinstall your NIC drivers which seem to get corrupted over time.  Also, look for a driver update for your NIC this could help to.  Also, are you running at 10 Half or full duplex with regards to your NIC.  I tried once at running at 100 full duplex but this simply was not good, after reducing back to 10 full duplex the system ran butter.

Anyway, just some things to consider on those cold lonely nights!

    Your Friend,

    compuworm

  8. 4mCHAM3L3ONm,

Do you use any tweaks for your router.  What kind of Linksys router do you have (make, model, version)?  I have a Linksys wrt54gs v2 router and I use a Hyperwrt firmware that allows me to increase my transmit power.

Further, what is your upload speed.  This is a biggy in lag>

    Thanks,

    compuworm

P.S. There is a way to make the router use Static I use it for my systems.

  9. I have a wrt54gs router from linksys and I got rid of the stock antenna and put on larger 7 gain.  This definitely increased my range and I got better signal strenght.  I don't know if you could put on larger antennas but you might consider it.

I work with linksys routers so I can't say if there is a firmware for your router that will allow an increase of transmit power.  Again, make sure you have the latest firmware that should help.

  10. A big city California lawyer went duck hunting in rural Texas. He shot a duck off a fence.

As the lawyer climbed over the fence, an elderly farmer drove up on his tractor and asked him what he was doing. The litigator responded, "I shot a duck and it fell in this field, and now I'm going into retrieve it."

The old farmer replied. "This is my property, and you are not coming over here."

The indignant lawyer said, "I am one of the best trial attorneys in the US and, if you don't let me get that duck, I'll sue you and take everything you own."

The old farmer smiled and said, "Apparently, you don't know how we do things in Texas. We settle small disagreements like this with the Texas Three Kick Rule."

The lawyer asked, "What is the Texas Three Kick Rule?"

The Farmer replied. "Well, first I kick you three times and then you kick me three times, and so on, back and forth, until someone gives up."

The attorney quickly thought about the proposed contest and decided that he could easily take the old codger. He agreed to abide by the local custom.

The old farmer slowly climbed down from the tractor and walked up to the city feller. His first kick planted the toe of his heavy work boot into the lawyer's groin and dropped him to his knees. His second kick nearly ripped the man's nose off his face. The barrister was flat on his belly when the farmer's third kick to a kidney nearly caused him to give up.

The lawyer summoned every bit of his will and managed to get to his feet and said, "Okay, you old coot now it's my turn."

The old farmer smiled and said, "Naw, I give up. You can have the duck."

Come on admit it how many of us would like to be that farmer??

  11. Are you tweaking your TCP/IP with Vanburen's Cablenut settings?  If not this would be a very good speed up.  Also, what kind of router do you have you could (if you have a linksys) download a firmware called hyperwrt to actually increase your transmit power as I have this to has increased my speed.

  12. Well, I not going to debate whether you do or don't get all your bandwidth for wireless.  But I too have two wireless comps and have tweaked them well and get about 50% of my ISP bandwidth if your getting more great.  Tell us how your doing it maybe I can get more out of my systems?  But, to my knowledge hardwired systems are faster than wireless systems.

Anywho, A-Cat take a look at the link below its simple to follow and should help/

  13. I would keep Sp2 but that's my opinion.  If you feel your system is faster without it than dont install.  Who is yoru ISP?  If it is Comcast they have McAfee for free download.  Again, what router do you have and are u using any tweaks for your TCP/IP?  You might want to look at the link below:
