  1. Hi, see you are having speed problems... If you are using cebridge you must be using cable HSD... There are several things it could be unfortunately but I will try to help you... Try what the previous post says and check your programs, may be a program taking from your bandwidth.. Your virus scanner shouldn't be doing this, unless it is updating virus definitions. Usually problem w/ virus scanners is that can block access completely if certain settings are enabled.. Okay, if you think that the startup programs are to blame do this: go to Run in start menu, type "msconfig". This will bring up your MS configuration utility.. be careful only to go to selective startup and uncheck the last option, load startup items.. when you do this and reboot you will notice you computer will be much faster when it restarts, but all the programs that auto start will not be available... Try to post your speed then. To reenable your startup programs do the same thing and recheck the box.. Also, if you have a very old computer, your speed is limited by the CPU speed. Since I don't know what the configuration is, or how you have internet set up, could be other factors in play.. If you have a very long cable cord to computer(over 20 feet), or have multiple splitters that might also be a factor. Hope this helps out!
  2. hi again, I think we are all close to the same page on this topic, but I think I understand where are getting hung up... I did a little more research on this topic for you, and I also checked on your Verizon equipment (Versalink 327w) on the website.. I have set one of these up before and are familiar with it... Hopefully this helps. This is the actual definition of bandwith quoted from a dictionary website... (1) A range within a band of frequencies or wavelengths. (2) The amount of data that can be transmitted in a fixed amount of time. For digital devices, the bandwidth is usually expressed in bits per second(bps) or bytes per second. Basically, the key word is "range", which means whenever testing your speed on any test website, you are almost always going to get a different number... the reason it is helpful to test with a larger file size is so some of the factors such as web traffic and loss of signal at times are eliminated more. When you start to download large files for example, you will notice the speed is very fast at first, then will slow down and stabilize... Also, most notice when you use a router, the computer directly connected through your Versalink will always get the faster speed, and you will get different speed depending how many people are using Verizon DSL in your area at that time.. Sometimes you will get a little more than 3 meg download speed if everything is perfect, but not often.. This is a great question that I think everyone has on their mind when they visit this great web site, thanks for asking! happy holidays!
  3. Hi, just became a member last night and was reading though some of the messages.. I was working for Charter about 6 months ago as a CSR, so I should be able to help out hopefully, and I can really understand your frustration like few can, because I have heard it quite a few times before. I must say first I was only a call center employee for a year and everything I am posting is *my opinion only*. This problem really seems to have started almost right after Charter started offering their new phone service to the Ga system (which they did too fast in my opinion).. The reason I think the two are linked are because they must be provided though the same frequency, not the case for example cable and internet.. All telephone accounts must have a dedicated IP address that is always on, just like the internet... To answer your question, I don't think Charter has added enough bandwidth in this area to accommodate all the new phone service and the existing internet service, since each headend (where your service is sent from) is only offered so much bandwidth. And the new 5 meg packages are making it worse in my opinion, because this takes evenmore from their main server, I think they just upgraded too fast... Please don't take it out on the technicians, almost all the techs I did talk with were very nice, and the impression they gave me is they were just as frustrated as the customers because they hear it every day and cannot fix it directly in most cases.. The bottom line is that I believe Charter knows that the problem exists and how to fix it, but probably is taking some time.. There could be some other reasons at fault too, like how good your cable lines are in the area and distance from the headend, or even if the cable from the house to the pole is bad, but you said your neighbors are having the same problem.. All in all I think Charter is a very good company and think you should use them as a provider, I also think you would be surprised they will try to work with you and at least able to give you some kind of special for a few months for the hassle.. Again I do not work for Charter any longer, but I really hope this helps and hope the problem is fixed soon for you and all your neighbors!
  4. Hi, I have some experience with Verizon DSL and have worked for cable internet support, so hopefully this helps... The plan you have allows you to download around 3000 Kbps and 660 Kbps -upload speed is always slower than download speed, though broadband providers never advertise this. Your average is exactly what I was getting when I had Verizon 1 year ago.. This means in simpler terms your download speed is 3 Megs and upload speed around 768 K (which is a pretty good ratio, cable broadband usually only get 256K usually). Another thing is that the reason the test you posted says that your speed is about half the average of the host's average is because most broadband providers are now coming out 6 Meg and 10 Meg packages (upload usually varies from provider, from 256K to 1 Mb), and are getting more popular now. If you were able to download at 832Kbs, that would likely mean you had a 10 Meg package, because it is very hard to get an accurate reading on that speed because it is so fast.. I have also noticed that if you use USB, windows wll tell you how fast the connection is between the modem and the computer, not between the computer and the internet.. This should mean that your modem is capable of a 10 Meg package, but my advice is to keep what you have, unless you have to have that much speed for some reason.. Hope this helps out a lot of people...
