I really like avg. As well avg anti spyware of late has found stuff so many other programs have missed. Both are free. I like comodo for a firewall. Comodo is free. Startup Inspector is handy not only to control startup programs but to help track down nastys when your computer starts. Helps you find out if the program is needed and what it is. If it dosent know it offers a link to google it. It is free as well. I can say forsure that useful computer programs really dont follow the rule "you get what you pay for". I find free programs work just as well and sometimes even better than the "paid" ones.

Best of luck. Keep your head down and stay safe. Just pray all this ends soon. Time for you guys to come home.

I love nortons ghost. I personally prefer version 8. Has never let me down. I use it to back up master drive to my slave drive.

Pardon me for a min. AHHHHHHHHHHH. I hear that so many times a day I just wanna scream at times. Um I have no idea what the problem is. Then of course I get the "well come look at it real quick". I really don't think people have any idea how long it takes to fix some problems. Sadly it can be a hit and miss thing sometimes. Then when I come up with what may be the only way to fix it is nuke the disk and reinstall, start from square one and take better care of your computer, they look at me like im stupid and or nuts. Frustrating. Think its time for mr. niceguy to bow out and simply tell them sorry I don't have the time. Sorry, ranting. Just frustrated with myself.

Was at a friends. She has xp with service pack 2. Every time you try to open a program you get the error, not a valid image file. Close the box and the program opens up fine? Any ides, im stumped on this one

Hey baby wanna see my cable connection? -
First time I have seen screen shots on vista. Thanks. I gotta laugh though. Seems like microsoft still loves to put those silly arrows on the icons. Most people just hate those arrows. Thanks for posting those.
-
Sure hope it stays that way. You know how microsoft can be with there patches Yea with a dual core and 2 gig of ram xp is plenty fast, Because I am the only user of my computer, plus I really keep my stuff organized well, and have it xp pretty tweaked out, I have yet to see anything personally that would at this point make me want to switch. Not trying to flame ya man, or tell you your wrong. Sounds like vista will be nice for the average user. Hope it stays that way and does not go the way of xp and its security.

In time I may put it on my slave drive. Wait until a service pack comes out for it. Almost everything vista can do including the eye candy can be achieved with 3rd party software for xp. I figure a year. Just my 2 cents.

Im not much on changing my desktop all the time with tons of choices. I found 2 diffrent sytles I love, Tempest, and cxp2. I will be darned If I can find or rember where I got them. I do have them backed up though. I use opera browser and with the skin I use for opera which is the black lynix 1.5 Tempest just makes it sweet looking. Really love how it not only changes windows but your browser as well.

You mean like this? http://www.otakusoftware.com/topdesk/ ?? In time I am sure a free ware aplication will be floating around. Not much you can do with vista that a few 3rd party software aplications and xp can do. I really think vista is gonna bomb. Most will hang on and use xp as long as possible. Just my 2 cents.

Here is the link for the program itslef. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-Enhancements/Themes/UXTheme-Patch-For-Windows-XP-SP2-Final.shtml . Gave it a shot and I really like it. Found a few themes I like and useing one now. I really can not tell you about the resouce use. I have a monster computer so it had no affect on mine. Works well. Oh I run 2 gig of dual core ram with a dual core athlon 4200. Xp Pro. Just a bit off topic but I just realized. Someone asked about the difference between xp pro and home. I think its kinda snooty sounding in a way. WHAT!! You only run xp home. Well I run XP pro therefore I am truly a computer geek. You must be a geek in training!. Lade Da Lade Da. So Yea saying I run xp pro can be kinda snooty sounding and bragish. Just in case you don't get it. I am making fun of myself and no one else. Meant no disrespect to anyone.

I found and really like this free wallpaper changer, no I promise its not spyware, http://www.wallpaperchanger.de/ I have tons of wallpaper for my puter. Now everytime I reboot, (thank you bill gates ) My desktop has a diffrent look I also found this handy free program http://www.palma.com.au/winroll/ right click on the toolbar and it will roll windows up and you can give your window a transparent look if you wish as well, And this one will make sure your window does not minimuize http://www.snapfiles.com/get/deskpins.html Any one else with other ideas??

This may get long winded so bear with me. I mediacom cable internet. Also have the phone through the cable company. I have a netgear router. Its about 2 or 3 years old. When the computer upstairs downloads anything it makes the connection downstairs big time slow. Almost unusable internet. Downloading torrents, (of course the leagal ones ) I am not sure if its the router, or the new box they put in. Was not this way before. My speeds are fine. Ask away any questions you may have. Just not sure if its the router issue or something else. Thank you.

Well after messing with countless programs, I believe I will just have her use system restore in xp. That seems to be the easiest, Maybe not the best, but hopefully it will be ok. If push comes to shove I will just back it up to cd. Yea I know it will take a few of them. See how it goes. I am pretty sure she will only use it for surfing, won't download or install anything. See how it goes. Thanks for the input.

Give this a shot. I tried it for awhile and it does work great. http://www.windowsxlive.net/?page_id=15 The download button is at the bottom of the page. I hated it. The one cool thing I personally found usefull was this. http://www.otakusoftware.com/topdesk/ I am running it on xp. Works great and I find it usefull.

Getting ready to tweak and install some programs on my mothers computer. Keep in mind she can barely turn on the computer. She has a e-machine ( ) It was a gift. Anyway. She has a cd rom drive and one 40 gig hard drive, no desire to upgrade. So I need to figure out how to best back it up to another partition and make it so she can restore the computer herself if needed. She is a 3 hour drive away. Norton ghost is what I use and WAY to geeked out for her. Any ideas??

I just saw staples now has a 500 gig harddrive. Are you kidding me. I have 2 harddrives, a 100gig and a 80gig. Thats way more than I will ever use. The question is what would you do with a 500gig?? Download every file on the net and save in "just in case"??
